The 7 Best MLB Moments From Sunday

Pink baseball is the best baseball.

Major League Baseball and its players got all dressed up and put on a show for Mother’s Day. From first pitch throws to pink bat homers, let’s jump into the best of Sunday’s action.

Happy Mother’s Day

One of the highlights of MLB’s activations in the calendar, Mother’s Day always brings out the sentimental side of many players. In a game that is so focused on competition, concentration, execution, and perfection, it was nice to see the players embrace their humanity for moments today. Love them or hate them, the Houston Astros hit the right tone with the mothers of some of the players throwing out the first pitch in sync. It looks like there was a mix of high fastballs, sliders, and curveballs. Maybe they all got the signs wrong!?

It was lucky that the schedule brought the Blue Jays to Houston yesterday, allowing Mrs. Gurriel to spend time with both her sons, Yuri and Lourdes. A nice moment that Mrs. Gurriel dressed appropriately for.

And then there was the swag – the catchers leading the way in all pink with accessories.

And I am sure the mothers of Jesús Luzardo, Frankie Montas, and Sean Manaea were so proud of the professional job their sons did today at the ballpark.

Pink Bat Homers Forever

There was just something uber-cool about the game’s superstars hitting the ball out of the park with a pink bat in celebration of Mother’s Day. Here are the best from Rafael Devers, Gleyber Torres, Daniel Vogelbach, and (of course) Fernando Tatis Jr. also got in on the act.

Best Mother’s Day Gift? Dingers!

Two of the games’ most loveable stars played the day perfectly. Freddie Freeman made sure to keep his promise of a home run for his wife for all she does for him and their newborn twins.

Andrew McCutchen wasted no time in showing off his love on the first pitch of Sunday Night Baseball in Atlanta. It was the second straight week that he has homered on a Sunday off the first pitch of the game.

He was quick to acknowledge who that was for when they cut to him mic’d up.

Defensive Play Of The Year?!

Sunday Night Baseball has been electric all season and yesterday it produced one of the most astonishing double plays of the season so far. Braves reliever Tyler Matzek had given up a single to the first batter he faced, Rhys Hoskins, in the top of the seventh inning with a 5-1 lead. However, he quickly cleared the bases thanks to a remarkable no-look over-the-head grab to turn a double play and get out of the inning unscathed. Check this out!

Get Me That Tee

One of the rookie sensation stories of the season has been Chicago White Sox designated hitter Yermín Mercedes. His power and prowess at the plate have been phenomenal – Mercedes currently has five HR and 17 RBI and is hitting .371/.408/.577 with a 178 OPS+. He has been quick to earn the nickname “The Yerminator” and all we want to know is where we can buy this tee?

Oh, and maybe we could ask Yermin just how fun Tim Anderson is as a teammate. This play from today was just awesome!

Little League Legend

On Mother’s Day, we strive to do that extra something special for those that have guided us through this world, cared for us, and inspired us to be who we are. And whether this little person knows it, they just made their Mother’s day by simply being who they are. What a wonderful way to show how baseball brings joy to so many of us. Thanks, little one.
