Injury Report: May 11

An ace hits the IL and an update on an MVP candidate.

Welcome to this week’s Injury Report!

Jacob deGrom – Lat Strain

Jacob deGrom has officially found himself on the 10-day IL and is making his season debut on the 2021 Injury Report. deGrom will miss at least two starts due to a right lat strain. I’m hoping the time off will help his lat heal, and we can avoid a third flareup during the season. I would expect deGrom to miss the minimum 10 days and be back on the bump soon.

Return Date: Late May

Buy/Sell/Hold: Hold

Carlos Carrasco – Hamstring Strain

Carlos Carrasco was reportedly going to make his season debut last week. The Mets recently moved him to the 60-day IL, pushing his season debut until June at the earliest. His delay is a cause for concern, but I will operate under the assumption that this delay is due to a setback until we get more news from the Mets.

Return Date: Mid-June

Buy/Sell/Hold: Hold

Cody Bellinger – Fibula Hairline Fracture

Cody Bellinger has resumed running on the field. Running is a big step in his recovery, and he is inching closer to his return. His timeline has accelerated, and I think that he should return within the next three weeks.

Return Date: Early June

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Byron Buxton – Hip Strain

Byron Buxton hit the IL due to a grade 2 hip strain. The Twins are saying this is a week-to-week injury; I think that he will be out for 4-6 weeks. If you know a manager worried about his injury, now would be a good time to buy. Once he returns, I wouldn’t be worried about this impacting his performance.

Return Date: Late June

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Alex Kirilloff – Wrist Strain

Alex Kirilloff will hit the IL with a wrist strain. This injury has been a mystery, and the Twins haven’t publicly determined how long he will be out. We have heard it could be a day-to-day concern, or a season-ending injury. I’m thinking, at a minimum, we won’t be seeing Kirilloff again until June. Even if he can avoid surgery, I’m worried about his season-long outlook. I think this is something that hangs around with Kirilloff for a while.

Return Date: Late June (Hopefully)

Buy/Sell/Hold: Sell

George Springer – Quad Strain

George Springer is on the IL again with another quad strain. This should be a typical recovery, and as long as Springer doesn’t rush his return to the field again, I’m not too worried about him when he does come back.

Return Date: Early/Mid June

Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy

Joey Votto – Thumb Fracture

Joey Votto will miss the next month or so with a fractured thumb. This shouldn’t impact his performance once he returns.

Return Date: Late June

Buy/Sell/Hold: Hold
