Today’s Headlines
Soto Watch: The Final Hour
The balance of the 2022 MLB trade deadline rested on one man: Juan Soto. For a week, the baseball world waited for the Soto situation to be resolved, with many doubting whether the Nats would really part with their 23-year-old megastar. But the Nats were determined, and according to multiple reports, the Soto sweepstakes narrowed to three teams entering Tuesday: the St. Louis Cardinals, San Diego Padres, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Those reports quickly zeroed in on the Padres as frontrunners, and by noon eastern, it was decided. Soto will be a Padre.
The San Diego Padres are finalizing a deal to acquire superstar outfielder Juan Soto from Washington, sources tell ESPN.
One of the biggest deals in baseball history goes down, and it sends the 23-year-old to SD, where he will team with Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado.

Once finalized, the deal should go down as one of the biggest in MLB history. I mean, look at the size of this package:
The package going back to Washington for Juan Soto and Josh Bell, sources tell ESPN:
– LHP MacKenzie Gore
– OF Robert Hassell III
– SS C.J. Abrams
– OF James Wood
– RHP Jarlin Susana
– one more major league playerThat's the only holdup right now to the agreed-upon deal.

The holdup, as it turns out, is none other than Eric Hosmer, who needed to waive his no-trade clause to D.C. before the deal could go through. Taking on Hosmer’s contract is no doubt part of San Diego’s willingness to part with so much talent (that, and not wanting to get out-scooped by the Dodgers again).
Still, with this much money on the line, it’s only a matter of time before they sort it out. WOW.
The Late-Night Stove
Monday was slow for a while, but the trade buzz picked up with intensity late. The biggest move of the day came from the Yankees, as they acquired A’s pitchers Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino for four minor-leaguers. YES Network’s Jack Curry had the scoop:

In the intervening hours, many a move was made, some more quietly than others. But the most surprising, perhaps, involved Brewers closer Josh Hader, who is now Padres closer Josh Hader. How ’bout that?
The Padres and Brewers swapped closers today with Josh Hader headed to San Diego and Taylor Rogers off to Milwaukee.
This is the first time in MLB history that teams have traded players with the two highest save counts at the time of the trade.

The final blockbuster came around 11 p.m. Eastern, when Atlanta and Houston – fresh off facing each other in the World Series – completed a Major League player swap:

Both pitchers have underachieved this year, but it was still an eye-opening move, especially coming less than a year after Atlanta closed out their World Championship with Smith on the mound. The Braves also acquired outfielder Robbie Grossman from the Tigers shortly after, parting with just one minor-league pitcher to get the deal done.
Here’s a full list of notable trades from Monday:
- The Cardinals acquired José Quintana from the Pirates along with reliever Chris Stratton.
- The Red Sox acquired Tommy Pham from the Reds, sent Christian Vazquez to Houston, and traded Jake Diekman to the White Sox for Reese McGuire.
- The Astros also finalized their deal for Trey Mancini and sent Jose Siri to Tampa Bay.
- The Yankees acquired reliever Scott Effross from the Cubs.
- Atlanta brought back utilityman Ehire Adrianza from Washington for minor-leaguer Trey Harris, designating Robinson Cano for assignment in the process.
- The Dodgers traded Garrett Cleavinger to Tampa Bay for German Tapia.
What will happen next?? Ahhhh!
It’s also DEGROM DAY!
Not to be overlooked on this day of wheelin’, dealin’ and intermittent squealin’ is the 2022 season debut of Jacob deGrom. The Mets’ oft-injured ace is set to face off against the Nationals tonight at 7:00 ET. Let’s go!
Happy deGrom Day.

His return should be rather cushy, facing off against one of the worst offenses in the league that just traded its two best hitters. But hey, more fun for us watching him. Here’s hoping all goes smoothly for the deGrominator.
Best Moments from Yesterday
Juan More for the Fans
Everybody and their grandmother knew Juan Soto was getting traded today – including Juan Soto. But he still managed to have a good time on Monday, giving his trade stock one more nudge with this blast against Max Scherzer. Take it all in, kid!
