Every year, the Fantasy Sports Writers Association (FSWA) accepts nominations for a wide variety of fantasy sports content-related categories, such as Writer of the Year, Article of the Year, Podcast of the Year, and more. Winning an FSWA Award is no small task (just ask FSWA 2019 Research Article of the Year winner Alex Fast), but the first step towards winning is being named one of the finalists for an award, an incredible accomplishment in and of itself. Please join us in recognizing our FSWA Award finalists for 2021!

Putting It All Together:
Using speX as the Ultimate Pitching Estimator
“Like any other tinkerer in this community, I’m pleased with all the data we get and all the info we have access to these days, I’m on the side of those that believe that more info, more power. While doing player analysis, we are used to swiping through a myriad of stats, comparing, relating, correlating, regressing, and we have the feeling that this will lead to a better result. That’s understandable and usually true, but it can also be exhausting.
That’s why in the past, I’ve been very eager in trying to develop simpler indicators that can work as well or better than others that are harder to calculate. I also prefer to combine multiple stats into one simpler aggregate. I’ve had success in using very simple stats as (K-BB)/IP or K%-BB% as good estimators of a pitcher’s future performance. They have provided guidance, but we know they are not an all-around solution; there is no such thing, but we can always keep trying.
So, in line with that, I wanted to have an indicator — a meta-number of sorts — which could be a summary of a few others and work as a quick first sign of what is lying ahead in terms of pitching performance.”
Baseball Writer of the Year Finalist
Carlos Marcano began writing at Pitcher List in December of 2020, and made an immediate impact on the fantasy baseball community, publishing insightful articles such as Introducing Q and Searching for the Power Squad. He translated multiple Fantasy 101 articles to Spanish, giving an underserved community an entry point into the fantasy baseball community. His article Putting It All Together: Using speX as the Ultimate Pitching Estimator has been named a finalist for FSWA Research Article of the Year. Marcano also contributed across the site in 2021, from coverage of the Tokyo Olympics to our Across the Seams section.
