Sit/Start Week 12: Reviewing All Starting Pitcher Matchups From 6/20-6/26

Lucas Zenobi scores every starting pitcher matchup for the week ahead.

Welcome back to Sit/Start, where we review all expected starting pitcher matchups for the week ahead. I will be carrying over the ranking system from last year. There are three labels: StartMaybe, and Sit.

Starts are surefire starts for those particular pitchers. This does not mean that they are incapable of having a bad outing, but I consider them more likely than not to have a good outing if they are designated as a Start. However, the degree of confidence I have in a pitcher to have a strong outing is judged by their number in the tier. For example, I am much more confident that a Start-10 will have a good outing than a Start-7, even though I expect both to perform well. The same goes for the other tiers. Maybes are starts that are a bit riskier, but depending on your league size or roster requirements, they may need to be used. A Start-10 is a pitcher who I believe will almost definitely have a strong outing: For example, a healthy Jacob deGrom at the Pittsburgh Pirates. A Sit-1 is a pitcher who, under no circumstances, should you consider starting.

There are some interesting options entering the fold, but with offense making a strong return, there are also several options that “broke out” during the down months leaving the fold.

For some housekeeping, I will try my best to update these at least once after they go live, but there are a ton of schedule and rotation shufflings. I apologize ahead of time if something is not current in the table below.

Without further ado, let’s see how your rotation is shaping up for this week. Feel free to question my rankings in the comments, and let’s discuss!

Hi Lucas, curious why you have Nick Pivetta listed as a Sit-3 @ Cleveland on Sat. 6/25? He has been doing so well lately. I sat him last Sunday vs. St. Louis and that was a mistake.

The reason I ask is because I am trying to decide whether to start Shane Baz Wed. 6/22/22, Pivetta on 6/25, or Bassitt on 6/25. I have to sit one of them. I was leaning on sitting Baz as he is a rookie vs. the best offense in MLB. Pivetta is pitching out of his mind but the results have been there. I keep waiting for the rails to fall off on Pivetta but they just don’t. Bassitt is a disappointment this year vs. last year but I believe he should have a decent outing @ Mia this Sat. as he goes against Trevor Rogers this time vs. last week he went against Sandy Alcantara which was a tougher match-up. Based on your rankings I’d start Baz and Bassitt and sit Pivetta. I guess I am leaning on sitting Baz and starting Pivetta and Bassitt. Thoughts?

Also, just an observation. I’ve was excited to get Spencer Strider on my team and gladly started him against The Giants Tues. night 6/21/22. I got burned as he gave up 6 earned runs. I made that decision on my own but saw that you gave Strider a Start-7 which I would’ve agreed with. This is all just like a crap shoot really.

    Thank you for your time!

Baz gets pulled at 4.2 one out short of the win. I started him. Big mistake!
