Sit/Start Week 23: Reviewing All Starting Pitcher Matchups From 9/2 – 9/8

Lucas Zenobi scores every starting pitcher matchup for the week ahead.

Welcome back to Sit/Start, where we review all expected starting pitcher matchups for the week ahead. I will be carrying over the ranking system from last year. There are three labels: StartMaybe, and Sit.

Starts are surefire starts for those particular pitchers. This does not mean they are incapable of having a bad outing, but I consider them more likely than not to have a good outing if they are designated as a Start. However, the degree of confidence I have in a pitcher to have a strong outing is judged by their number in the tier. For example, I am much more confident that a Start-10 will have a good outing than a Start-7, even though I expect both to perform well. The same goes for the other tiers.

Maybes are starts that are a bit riskier, but depending on your league size or roster requirements, they may need to be used. A Start-10 is a pitcher who I believe will almost definitely have a strong outing: for example, a healthy and undeniable ace against a poor offensive team is going to be a Start-10. A Sit-1 is a pitcher who, under no circumstances, should you consider starting.

For some housekeeping, I will try my best to update these at least once after they go live, but there is a ton of schedule and rotation shuffling. I apologize ahead of time if something is not currently in the table below.

Without further ado, let’s see how your rotation is shaping up for this week. Feel free to question my rankings in the comments, and let’s discuss!

A stark contrast between this and the 2 start list for Bello. 2-start says start and this says sit.

We sometime have disagreements in terms of how we feel about pitchers, and I understand the confusion. Regarding Bello, he’s a career mid-fours ERA pitcher with less than a strikeout per inning and below average batted-ball metrics. There’s really nothing exciting about him that would lead me to recommend him, but the match ups are solid so do and follow what you’re comfortable with.

Least helpful article I’ve ever seen. Everything is different compared to other articles. Some say start, some say sit, Little Nicky says this, Little Nicky says that.

    Not looking good……..

  3. Marty the Celery Salesman says:

The articles are written by two different people. According to you, they disagree on Bello next week. What’s the problem?

THANKS, I check this column and the Two-start column every week. This was the first time I could remember such opposite opinions. I thought the same way you did and dropped Bello last week. In the last couple of weeks, my whole SP staff has been in turmoil (Taj, Pepiot, Gil, Bibee, Woo, Crochet) and pulled my team out of first so I’m turning over every rock for answers. Between last week and this, I have a new waiver-built staff (Heany, Bido, Francis, and Bello (picked up)). I get Gil and Schmidt back this weekend. Hopefully, I can stop the bleeding and come back. I still have deGrom on the IL.
