Welcome to this week’s Injury Report!
Trent Grisham – Left Foot Contusion
Trent Grisham will miss the next 10-15 days with a bruised heel. There isn’t much to be worried about here. Expect him to come off the IL when first eligible.
Return Date: 10-15 days

Manny Machado – Shoulder Tightness
Manny Machado hasn’t played since Friday while dealing with shoulder tightness. At this point, I’m expecting a stint on the IL, and I’m surprised the Padres haven’t made a move already. Based on what manager Jayce Tingler has said about the injury, I’m not too worried and expect Machado to have a minimum IL stint if needed.
Return Date: 10 days
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
Franmil Reyes – Oblique Strain
Franmil Reyes will be out for the rare 5-7 weeks (instead of the typical 6-8 weeks we always hear) with an oblique strain. I’m leaning on the 7-week absence side of this injury. I would be surprised if Reyes can make a return before then.
Return Date: Mid July
Buy/Sell/Hold: Hold
Kenta Maeda – Groin Strain
Kenta Maeda hit the IL over the weekend with a groin strain. This is something that Maeda has been dealing with over the past few weeks, so an IL stint isn’t a surprise. I don’t expect a lengthy absence. We are looking at 2-3 weeks.
Return Date: Mid June

Cavan Biggio – Neck Sprain
Cavan Biggio finds himself on the 10-day IL with a cervical spine sprain. The Blue Jays are reporting that Biggio has been dealing with this for a while, and they only expect him to miss a minimum of 10 days. I’m not terribly worried about this injury long-term, but it would not surprise me if he has another IL stint at some point during the rest of the season.
Return Date: Early June
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
Pete Alonso – Right Hand Sprain
Since being placed on the IL on Friday, Pete Alonso has resumed swinging the bat. This is a significant step in returning from a hand sprain, and we should hear that Alonso is progressing quickly. I wouldn’t expect Alonso to be out much longer, and I’m not worried about this injury lingering around once he comes off the IL.
Return Date: Early June
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
J.T. Realmuto – Hand Contusion
J.T. Realmuto will be out till at least May 29 with a bruised left hand. The images have come back clean for Realmuto, so now we have to wait for the bruise to heal. This doesn’t worry me, and I expect Realmuto to be back on May 29 or shortly thereafter.
Return Date: 5-10 days
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
Mike Moustakas – Heel Contusion
Mike Moustakas joins the Injury Report after landing on the IL with a heel contusion. Moustakas and the Reds are hoping for a 10-day minimum stay, and I don’t have any reason to believe otherwise. Once Moose comes off the IL, plug and play him without worrying about this injury.
Return Date: 5-10 days
Buy/Sell/Hold: Buy
Didi Gregorius – Elbow Swelling
Didi Gregorius has been on the IL for the past week with elbow swelling. The latest report out of Philly is that Gregorius’ elbow is still swollen to the point that he hasn’t started swinging yet. This might be as simple as his body not being able to flush the inflammation out, or it could be a case of elbow bursitis. I would expect Didi to miss the next couple of weeks while he works through this. This could be something that lingers around for the next couple of months, so keep that in mind if he is on your roster.
Return Date: Mid June

Team Updates
- The New York Mets have announced that Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto will be out until late June with their hamstring strains. The interesting case known as Carlos Carrasco is expected to be out till at least late June. This continues to baffle me, and I have no clue why he hasn’t been able to make it back from his hamstring injury. We will continue to monitor all three of these players moving forward.
- Eloy Jimenez made waves over the Twittersphere Sunday by hinting he may return from his pec tear soon. Don’t buy it! He’s lying to you. He has to be lying. Jimenez will be out until September at the earliest.
- Chris Sale has successfully started throwing off a mound. He has not thrown against hitters yet, but is still making progress. At this time, he is still on track for a return around the All-Star Break.
- Joey Votto has started taking grounders and is making progress towards his return. Still looking at an early June return.
- Framber Valdez has been sailing through his rehab assignment. Expect him to return in a couple of weeks.
- Cody Bellinger and Zach McKinstry are expected to return this weekend.
- Jordan Hicks will be out of baseball activities for another month. We are now looking at a July return.

Thoughts on Zach Plesac?
I would thinking 4-6 weeks. Thanks for reading!
Thanks for your timely and thoughtful analysis!
This is just my best guess based off the little information we have right now. Obviously it could be shorter or longer depending on the news we get in the coming days/weeks. Being a non-displaced fracture I would be shocked if he misses more than 6 weeks. Hope this helps!
