MLB News & Moments You Should Know: 8/14/2024

Happy Lefty's Day from Juan Soto; Houston streak to seven

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

Hey UCLs, can you chill? River Ryan just got to the big leagues, and now he’s headed for Tommy John surgery. And Jazz Chisholm Jr. isn’t even a pitcher! He was having such a good time in the Bronx, and now he’s sidelined. Hopefully not too long. I’m not even a Dodgers or Yankees fan. Just a baseball fan who hopes that medical minds can figure out how to take better care of that pesky joint that keeps sidelining stars and prolonging absences. We’ve got over a month left in the regular season, and I hope we can make it with minimal casualties in baseball’s war on elbows.

Today’s Headlines

Soto Shots Lead Yankees Over Sox

August 13 is International Lefthanders Day, and Juan Soto marked the occasion with his first career three-homer game. Two opposite field shots and a blast to right helped the New York Yankees forget the bad taste of Monday’s blowout loss to the Chicago White Sox with a 4-1 win. The trio of solo home runs gives Soto 33 for the season, two shy of his career-high from last year. Lefty Nestor Cortes also celebrated with seven innings, nine strikeouts, and no runs.

Seven Straight for the ‘Stros

Concerns about the Houston Astros giving up too much prospect capital for Yusei Kikuchi have been put to rest by his work since coming over at the trade deadline. Kikuchi threw 5.2 innings for the third straight start with Houston, gave up a run, and struck out five in a 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay RaysAlex Bregman went 3-for-5 with a home run and a sliding catch in foul territory. The Astros have won seven in a row and seem to be taking control of the fate of the AL West. They’re 1.5 games ahead of the Seattle Mariners, who got clobbered by the Detroit Tigers 15-1.

Set in Stone

Gavin Stone leads the Los Angeles Dodgers in wins (10), games started (tied with Tyler Glasnow at 22), and complete game shutouts (1). He’s second behind Glasnow—they’re the only qualified Dodgers pitchers—in ERA (3.63), innings (121.1), WHIP (1.28), and OBA (.261). Will SmithShohei OhtaniGavin Lux, and Andy Pages all hit home runs to give support to their rookie starter for a 7-2 win against the AL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers. Stone has been a rock for a Dodgers rotation defined by injuries this season.

Best Moments From Yesterday

Glitch Hitter

Even if there’s no video of Yordan Alvarez mashing a ball into the Jumbotron during batting practice, this Roy Hobbs-esque feat is totally believable.

Filthy Stuff

We’ve all called in sick to work. Hunter Greene threw up in the middle of going 7.0 IP and striking out eight against the St. Louis Cardinals. He’s throwing his name into the Cy Young conversation.

(Vomit warning for the squeamish out there.)

K-ing 10

The San Diego Padres got Michael King as a part of the Soto trade. He struck out 10 in six innings and the Padres won 3-0. (But he’s righthanded, so the double-digit Ks weren’t in celebration of International Lefthanders Day.)

Jake the Snake

We have to keep pointing out both the Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks. The NL West wildcard pair is so hot right now. Here’s your daily dose of Diamondback magic, this time courtesy of Jake McCarthy’s first walk-off hit.

Doubles Debut

Even former Snakes are getting in on the action. Arizona traded minor-leaguer Andrés Chaparro to the Washington Nationals this year. Chaparro hit three doubles in his Major League debut, which was a long time coming.

Boyd is Back

Matthew Boyd celebrated International Lefthanders Day by returning from Tommy John surgery (seriously UCLs, give it a rest). He pitched 5.1 innings and struck out six on 80 pitches before being lifted because it’s been 414 days since he pitched.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ Junior Caminaro made his season debut for the Rays. MLB Pipleline’s No.2 prospect hit a ball 116 mph for an infield single.

⚾ Aaron Boone informed reporters that Jazz Chisholm Jr. is likely headed for the IL with a UCL injury.

⚾ Torey Lovullo announced that Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte has a low-grade ankle spring and is day-to-day.

⚾ J.D. Martinez was hit by a pitch in the elbow and left Tuesday’s game. Carlos Mendoza told reporters that X-rays were negative and Martinez is day-to-day.

⚾ Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed starter River Ryan will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season.

I wonder what caused Hunter Greene to puke. This is the 4th time in his career he has done this. It is pure liquid and appears to have a bit of color to it. It makes me think he is drinking (too much of) something (energy drinks?) in between innings and it is playing havoc with his digestive system.
