Today’s Headlines

Shift Bans, Bigger Bases, and Pitch Clock in 2023

Major League Baseball will vote today to approve changes for the 2023 season, including pitch clocks and shift bans. The pitch clock will make it so pitchers have 20 seconds to begin their throwing motion with runners on, and 15 seconds if the bases are empty. Balls can be called if a pitcher takes too long, and batters could face automatic strikes if they take too long.

Bases would increase from 15 inches to 18. Defensive shifts will require all teams to have a minimum of four players with both feet on the infield dirt, while two of those fielders must be positioned on either side of second base. Infielders will be designated by teams as playing left or right and can’t switch sides unless there’s a substitution.

Batterymates Tie MLB Record

Yadier Molina tied with Adam Wainwright to tie the major league record of 324 starts by batterymates. Molina also homered twice in the game but lost 11-6 to the Nationals. The original record was held by Mickey Lolich and Bill Freeman for the Tigers from 1963-1975.

Peralta Exits Early

Freddy Peralta left the second game of the Brewers’ double-header in the third inning with shoulder fatigue in his throwing shoulder. Peralta’s start had been pushed back three days to give him time to recover from his last appearance. This was also the second straight day the Brewers had to remove a starting pitcher from the game with a medical issue. Eric Lauer exited after 2 2/3 innings with tightness in his throwing elbow. This was after he allowed seven runs.

The Brewers Troll Pederson

The Brewers had a little fun with the scoreboard during Joc Pederson’s at-bat. A fun jab as football season began yesterday.
