All anyone has ever done is use data to give their opinions. In the past data didn’t come from computers necessarily, but that is the implication these days – that data is something produced by a machine. What machines produce doesn’t amount to more than an opinion. The biggest challenge to living in 2010 is that there is so much data out there that you have to chose what to use. Anyone can support whatever they want using data – the worse the data the more crazy conclusions you can draw. Fake news is a nice analog to data driven fantasy analysis. The thing that is becoming increasingly rare is the opinion of knowledgeable humans! I think the idea that opinions supported by choice facts actually creates a new level of bias where people begin to mistake ideas for facts. I think there was a greater level of humility a few years back. On the flip, it hasn’t been easier to buy low and sell high in my lifetime as people tend to re-tweet the same incorrect conclusions and believe them more than they should.
