Two excellent sliders biting into left-handers square off in the opening round. Trevor Bauer transformed his cutter into a slider at the tail-end of 2017, and the slide piece has been a dominant force all season long, featuring excellent drop and bend. Mike Foltynewicz has also taken strides with his sweeper, harnessing its command almost as a softer and emphasized cutter, focusing on high velocity and heavy lateral movement. Both breakers ate up their hitters, but only one can set course for the second round.
