MLB News & Moments: 2026 All-Star Game Edition

The AL pitches a shutout

The All-Star Game and Home Run Derby are in the books, and Pitcher List has you covered on all the memorable and meme-worthy moments that will live on forever.

The Actual Game

AL Reclaims the Crown

A year after the famous swing-off decided by Kyle Schwarber to give the win to the NL, the 2026 All-Star Game was quite short on drama and excitement. Starting in his home ballpark, ace Cristopher Sánchez started the contest in perfect fashion, striking out Mike Trout using his cartoonish changeup. However, the rest of the inning would not go as smoothly, as Sanchez loaded the bases with two outs after walking Bobby Witt, Jr. With a chance to close out the inning unscathed, consecutive RBI hits from Yankees gave the AL a 3-0 lead, as Cody Bellinger and Ben Rice were able to solve Sanchez. This early run support would be more than enough for an AL staff that was on a mission to dominate.

Dylan Cease struck out the side in the first, setting the tone for the 11-pitcher effort that limited the NL to only three singles and two walks, with nobody allowing more than one baserunner at a time. This means that the NL had no at-bats with a runner in scoring position, while striking out 15 times. The AL would not do much better after the first-inning explosion, but Miguel Vargas added a solo homer to give the fans something to celebrate, as this was the only extra-base hit they would get to see.

All in all, the game was pretty unremarkable, but at least gave us the chance to get a few notable moments, like Dodgers pitcher Justin Wrobleski getting five Ks over two innings on his birthday, which would have probably meant an MVP award in a winning effort. Alas, the MVP went to Bellinger, whose lone hit in three at-bats was key to decide the game. With this W, the American League is now 49-45-2 in All-Star games, and recorded their first shutout victory in more than a decade. Having said all this, MLB action returns on Thursday with a single game, and we can get back our real baseball fix on Friday, when all 30 teams will be back in action.

Try to enjoy the only summer day with no baseball. Maybe catch the Argentina-England World Cup matchup, which has all the makings of a really dramatic affair.

Sibling Rivalry

Playing this game in the famous city of brotherly love, things worked out perfectly to give us a nice moment between the most famous pair of MLB brothers. The AL’s Willson Contreras took his only at-bat in the sixth inning, as brother William Contreras was doing the catching for the NL. Before the elder Contreras got a hit, both shared an embrace that symbolizes what baseball is all about: fun, family, and healthy competition.

Oh Canada!

Ernie Clement is a fine player, and his star turn during last year’s playoffs endeared him to a whole nation. This is how we can explain how Clement was the AL’s most voted player in this All-Star game, surpassing 3 million votes and getting an automatic starting spot in the team. Toronto’s second baseman could not do much at the plate, going 0-for-2 before ceding his place to Travis Bazzana, but he at least made a nice defensive contribution. With Andy Pages batting, a slow grounder up the middle looked certain to become a hit, but Clement tracked it expertly and made a perfect jump throw to deny the NL. Many questioned Clement’s status, but for one play, he erased all doubts.

Philly Royalty

Playing the game in Philadelphia created a strange scenario where their passionate fans used their patented boos on many players, while also showing their love for the home favorites. In that regard, the organization brought out the big guns to start the game, with the team’s all-time most important players tossed out the first pitch. Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton are widely considered the best hitter and pitcher, respectively, to ever don the Philadelphia uniform. As usual, baseball finds a way to connect its past and present in the best way.

Live! from the Red Carpet

The Last Dance

Having recently announced his retirement, Justin Verlander’s status as a historic player are undeniable. Invited to the All-Star Game as one of the league’s elder statesmen, he had to go out in style. His wife is quite used to red carpets and paparazzi, but Verlander also showed that he has the style and elegance to grace these stages.

A Bold Statement

Mike Trout’s path through All-Star games has seen him navigate several stages of his life, and his return as a 16-year veteran means that his juds can really appreciate what his dad does for a living. In that regard, a red-carpet interview of his oldest son, Beckham, provided one of the best sound bites of the day. Beckham not only proclaimed to play all positions on the diamond, but he also vowed to become even better than his famous pops. If that ever comes to fruition, this short clip will become legendary.

Got That Dog in Him

Jacob Misiorowski’s appearance in the 2025 All-Star roster created quite the stir, but there was no such controversy in 2026, as the Miz has emerged as the top pitcher in the game. While Misiorowski’s recent schedule and fatigue kept him out of the game itself, he at least was part of the festivities, rocking a memorable suit in the process. Many players had customized suits, but Miz gets extra points by featuring his adorable pup, Ember. Let’s hope he doesn’t get the urge of throwing at 100mph when playing fetch!

By The Numbers

4 Cody Bellinger became the fourth Yankee to win All-Star Game MVP, joining Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Giancarlo Stanton.

7 After striking out the side in the first, Dylan Cease became the seventh pitcher to strike out three in an All-Star Game’s opening frame. Other notable hurlers on that list include Pedro Martinez and Warren Spahn.

10 The 4-0 final score gave us only the tenth All-Star shutout in history. The previous one came all the way back in 2013, when the AL took home a 3-0 win.

3 Miguel Vargas‘ solo blast made him part of a very exclusive club, as he is only the third White Sox player in history with an All-Star Game home run. The other two were Frank Thomas in 1995 and Magglio Ordoñez in 2001.

61 When the final box score was settled, 61 total players had some kind of participation in the All-Star Game. The game ended with 10 combined hits, 4 walks, and 27 strikeouts.
