Today’s Headlines
Corbin Walks it Off
With only a couple of late night west coast games occurring last night, the action was pretty light late into the evening until Arizona Diamondbacks OF Corbin Carroll provided the excitement with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1. It was a tight low-scoring ball game throughout, in large part due to the performance of Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez (7 IP, 0 ER, 4 K, 4 H) who lowered his season ERA to 2.24. The Diamondbacks moved to three games over .500 at 26-23 and have been playing much better of late after scuffling for a few weeks. This was the first game of this particular series and the two clubs will meet for three more this weekend.
Cleveland Sweeps Detroit
The Cleveland Guardians completed a four-game sweep of the free-falling Detroit Tigers yesterday with their 3-1 victory. The club was propelled by a solid performance from starter Joey Cantillo (5.2 IP, 0 ER, 6 K, 3 H, 3 BB) who moved to 4-1 on the year, and new catcher Patrick Bailey, recently acquired from San Francisco, hit his second homer with his new team. Cleveland now heads to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies for a three game set, while the Tigers, who are now a shocking 11 games under .500, head to Baltimore to take on the Orioles.
Toronto Salvages Series Split
The Toronto Blue Jays were able to hold the New York Yankees scoreless yesterday in a bullpen game that saw five different Toronto pitchers shut the Yankees down en route to a 2-0 victory. An RBI double from Dalton Varsho in the first inning and a solo homer by George Springer in the 7th was all the offense Toronto needed in this one, and they leave the Bronx having salvaged a four-game series split after dropping the first two. Toronto will head home to welcome the Pirates for a three game series this weekend, while the Yankees stay in the Bronx to welcome the Rays.
