Today’s Headlines

Long Overdue

Joe Ryan pitched a three-hit complete-game shutout, the first for Minnesota in five years. This was Ryan’s first in the majors over 47 starts, with the last happening in 2018 for Cal State, Stanislaus. In that same year, José Berríos pitched a six-hit complete-game shutout against the White Sox on June 7, 2018. Ryan’s performance comes after a rough start last week, allowing a season-high six runs against the Tigers that boosted his ERA to 5.03 for June.

Wander-ing Over To The Bench

Wander Franco has been benched for at least the next two games due to clubhouse issues. Kevin Cash said the issue is a result of Franco handling his frustrations and being a poor teammate.

Hey Now, You’re An All-Star

Major League Baseball announced its All-Star finalists yesterday after the first phase of voting ended. Ronald Acuña Jr. is now a four-time All-Star, with two of those years being back-to-back. He lead with 3,082,600 votes. Shohei Ohtani earned 2,646,307 votes, becoming an All-Star for the third time. The second voting phase begins Monday at noon ET and runs through noon ET next Thursday.

Managerial Drama

Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez had some issues with the home-plate umpire Doug Eddings. The two exchanged words during the fifth inning before Martinez got down on his stomach to lie down behind the plate before being ejected.

New City Connects

The Pirates unveiled their City Connect uniforms that focus on the black and gold theme that each professional sports team wears in Pittsburgh. The shapes on the uniform are a nod to the “Steelmark” logo, Pittsburgh’s city seal. They will debut the uniforms on Tuesday and wear the jerseys for every remaining Friday home game, with the exception of Roberto Clemente Day on September 15.
