SEC continues to dominate in the major leagues

Today’s Headlines

SEC Well Represented in the Draft

The Pirates selected Paul Skenes first overall in Sunday’s draft. To follow it up, the Washington Nationals selected his teammate outfielder Dylan Crews. This is the first time in draft history that teammates have been selected first and second overall. But when those teammates just dominated the SEC and won the College World Series, it’s not hard to see why.

Reports circled earlier this week that Crews was seeking a $10m signing bonus. Whether that played a part in the Nationals drafting him remains to be seen.

Yankees Fire Hitting Coach

The Yankees have had a fluctuating offensive season. With Aaron Judge sidelined for nearly a month, they have had to rely on offensive output from other areas. Unfortunately, those players have not been performing. For the season, the Yankees are hitting .230, and since Judge’s injury they are batting .219. They have also scored the fewest runs, 107, while completing a 13-16 record since Judge’s injury.

Naturally, the hitting coach is the only fireable personnel, so unsurprisingly that is what Cashman did. However, a change is unlikely as the roster has been injury prone and underperforming. It will be interesting to see who they bring in and what changes can be made.

Best Moment From Yesterday

Rutschman Is Ready for the Derby

What can’t Adley Rutschman do? Just over a year into his major league career, Rutschman has been everything the top draft picks aim to be. On Sunday, he continued to display his offensive prowess, demolishing a ball 461 feet. Before this, he had never hit a home run further than 440 feet. Looks like someone is ready for the derby.

Injuries & Transactions

Kansas City Royals designated LHP Amir Garrett for assignment.
Atlanta Braves sent LHP Max Fried on a rehab assignment to Gwinnett Stripers.
