MLB celebrates Roberto Clemente Day
Major League Baseball celebrated the life and legacy of humanitarian icon, Pittsburgh Pirates great, and Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente on Sunday. The game celebrates Clemente annually on September 15th, paying tribute to not only his greatness on the field but his commitment to highlighting injustices and supporting those in need. Now more than ever, Clemente’s words ring true: “Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on earth.”

Dodgers explode in 9th vs. Atlanta, Mets fans rejoice
The Dodgers and Atlanta went into the 9th inning knotted at 2, but Los Angeles quickly flexed their dangerous lineup. Rather than pitch to Shohei Ohtani with a runner on third and two outs, Brian Snitker intentionally walked Ohtani to bring up Mookie Betts. The Dodgers got back-to-back singles from Betts and Freddie Freeman, giving them a 5-2 lead. As if that wasn’t enough of a cushion from the 3 MVPs, the Dodgers lineup depth exploded for back-to-back-to-back home runs. Teoscar Hernández, Tommy Edman, and Max Muncy went yard, giving the Dodgers a 9-2 lead that would be enough to hold off Atlanta.
After the Mets’ 2-1 loss to the Phillies, Atlanta had the chance to secure the third NL Wild Card spot for themselves with a win. Instead, the Mets and Atlanta enter today tied for that final NL Wild Card spot.

Mariners & Tigers keep winning, now 2.5 games back from ALWC
The Mariners got a stellar outing from starting pitcher George Kirby on Sunday. The righthander tossed 7 shutout innings, allowing just 1 hit, no walks, and struck out 3 Rangers hitters. And just one day after his walk-off hit, Randy Arozarena delivered a big home run in the 7th inning on Sunday. It was Arozarena’s 20th home run of the season, giving him his fourth consecutive 20/20 season. He and José Ramírez are the only players to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in each of the past four seasons.

Having now won 8 of their last 11 games, Seattle is right in the thick of the playoff race. They, along with the Tigers, are 2.5 games back from the final AL Wild Card spot.
To the Tigers’ credit, they’ve won 7 of their last 10 games to keep pace with the Mariners. Detroit beat a struggling Orioles team with a strong outing from Keider Montero and a big two-homer game from Riley Greene.

Heliot Ramos makes history
Heliot Ramos has been one of the most surprising success stories of the 2024 season. On Sunday, he made history by becoming the first right-handed hitter to hit a home run into McCovey Cove.
Want another cool nugget? As the great Sarah Langs pointed out, Ramos’ home run came on a 100.2 mph pitch, the fastest pitch a Giants player has homered off of under pitch tracking (since 2008).

A message from the late Willie Mays on Orlando Cepeda
The San Francisco Giants honored Orlando Cepeda in a celebration of life on Sunday. Former teammates and Hall of Famers Juan Marichal and Tony Oliva spoke, but the most touching moment was an unexpected message from the late Willie Mays.
Mays, learning that Cepeda’s health was deteriorating, wanted to write something to honor his friend in case he couldn’t be there. Mays would end up passing away just 10 days before Cepeda earlier this year.
It was a special message that I won’t try to summarize. You can listen to it in full below.

Injuries and Other Moves
⚾ SS Francisco Lindor was removed from Sunday’s game with back discomfort. He’s been playing through back soreness for about two weeks and will get an MRI today.
⚾ SS/CF Oneil Cruz was removed from Sunday’s game with ankle discomfort after he slipped in the outfield, but the move seems precautionary.
⚾ CJ Abrams did not play Sunday due to continuing shoulder discomfort, but he was available to pinch hit and should be ready for today’s game per manager Davey Martinez.
⚾ RP Ben Joyce will not pitch again this season.
