Lourdes Have Mercy
Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (ARI): 2-5, 2B, HR, R, 3 RBI.
Gurriel Jr. hasn’t been doing too hot through a limited sample size this season, to say the least. The 32-year-old is slashing just .226/.275/.328 with a 66 wRC+ over 36 games this season. However, things have started to look up. The righty has managed to go 8-for-25 (.320 BA) with a .946 OPS and 157 wRC+ since returning to play last week on June 23rd.
Yesterday was a big day for his OPS, smacking a 104 EV / .510 xBA double off Adrian Houser and a 103 EV / 389 FT home run off Landen Roupp, helping fuel the Diamondbacks’ 8-2 win over their division rival, the Giants.
Let’s see how the other hitters did Tuesday…
Dansby Swanson (CHC): 3-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI.
Swanson turned in a dynamic performance en route to a big Cubs win against the Padres, scorching four baseballs over 100 mph. Three of those balls in play recorded hits — a 101.3 EV single and two home runs. The first registered a 103.9 EV while traveling 432 FT, and the second came in at 103.5 EV / 437 FT. Nearly identical homers. Swanson has recorded multiple hits in back-to-back games.
Bobby Witt Jr. (KCR): 3-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI.
Witt launched two homers and a single against the Rays yesterday. Both home runs were out in 30/30 ballparks, per Savant. The first registered a 107.3 EV while traveling 416 FT, while the second came in at 103.1 EV / 432 FT. It goes without saying of course, but Bobby Witt is easily a top-five player in the league. Such an exceptionally fun player to watch.
Riley Greene (DET): 2-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI.
Greene posted three EVs of 105+ mph yesterday, including his back-to-back plate appearances yielding home runs off Cam Schlittler. The first came in at 107.6 EV / 424 FT, while the second had a 105.5 EV and traveled 404 FT. Greene has tallied three multi-hit games over his last six starts and owns a 134 wRC+ on the year.
Tommy Edman (LAD): 4-5, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI.
Edman is slashing .395/.452/.579 with a 188 wRC+ over 11 games since returning from injury. He pieced up his first home run of the season yesterday — a 105.8 EV / 428 FT shot — along with three consecutive singles that followed in his later plate appearances.
Fernando Tatis Jr. (SDP): 2-5, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI.
Tatis has come alive for Slam Diego! Dating back to June 6th (22 games):
| BA | OPS | EV | HH% | xwOBA | wRC+ |
| .319 | .895 | 96.3 | 60% | .396 | 149 |
He launched two bombs yesterday for the Padres despite the loss — a 95.7 EV / 370 FT shot and a 106 EV / 425 FT long ball.
Javier Sanoja (MIA): 3-5, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI.
Sanoja, who owns just a 96 wRC+ this season, managed to tally three hits en route to a dominant 14-3 win over the Rockies. He singled twice (95.6 and 103.4 EVs), plus added a 98.7 EV / 419 FT home run. The 23-year-old has recorded three hits in back-to-back games and three of his last four starts.
Yordan Alvarez (HOU): 3-4, HR, R, 4 RBI.
Alvarez has proven time and time again why he is a top-three hitter in baseball when healthy, and yesterday was no exception, smoking three baseballs over 100 mph — a 102.5 EV single, 105.7 EV / 395 FT home run, and 115.1 EV single. Alvarez’s 184 wRC+ currently leads the majors by 18 points… his SLG leads by over 30. He’s been by far and away the most impressive batter in baseball this season.
Trea Turner (PHI): 2-5, 2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI.
Turner smoked a 105 EV double and a 97.7 EV / 376 FT home run en route to an 8-0 victory over the Pirates yesterday. The veteran infielder has been nothing short of exceptional over his last 13 games, slashing .345/.379/.527 with a 150 wRC+. Best of all? He’s got multiple hits in six of his last eight games.
Jake Bauers (MIL): 3-4, HR, 3 R, RBI.
Bauers terrorized Rhett Lowder, racking up hits in three consecutive at-bats against the righty, including back-to-back singles and a 106.1 EV / 425 FT home run. The 30-year-old has turned many heads this season and rightfully so, slashing .272/.377/.508 with a 144 wRC+ through 74 games.
