Weekend Streaming: Week 8

Searching for five players to help you win your Week 8 matchup.

Welcome back to another weekend streaming article where I select five players based on hot streaks, pitching/team matchups, or a combination of things to help fantasy owners acquire cheap, low-roster rate (50% or below) production to help win the last two days of their weekly matchups.

Here are Week 7’s results:

Let’s take a look at Week 8:

Colin Rea, RHP, Chicago Cubs

Rea, now in his age-34 season, has quietly pitched to a 2.32 ERA in 41.2 innings this season. He’s stranded 86% of baserunners, dropped the hard hit rate by over 5%, and is in-line to post multiple career-highs. The velo doesn’t jump off the page, but his seven-pitch mix is enough to keep hitters off balance. His slider/sweeper/splitter trio each generate 30%+ whiff rates, and his fastball has been super effective.

Rea has allowed two or less runs in six of his seven starts, and currently enters today with a six-game streak of going at least five innings. He faces a Reds offense that, outside of Will Benson, has been among the worst in baseball. They’ve slashed .231/.304/.388/.692 with an 87 wRC+ and a 26% K rate in the month of May.

Carlos Narváez, C, Boston Red Sox

Running it back! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: quality catching depth is so hard to find. That’s why I’m shocked Narvaez comes into today with a miniscule 3% roster rate. He’s been tearing the cover off the ball this month, slashing .386/.460/.591/1.051 with a 196 wRC+. He’s all but earned the starting catcher job from teammate Connor Wong, so this could be a move that not only benefits you for the weekend, but the overall season.

If you only need him for the weekend, though, it’s perfect timing. The Sox square off with the Orioles, who are tied for the worst fWAR mark (-0.8) among pitching staffs this month.

Hunter Dobbins, RHP, Boston Red Sox

Another Red Sox? Sure, why not. Dobbins, 25, has burst onto the scene this year. He was the 10th or 11th best arm heading into Red Sox camp, and now has been one of the best young arms in all of baseball. He’s turned in a 3.62 ERA/3.39 FIP while walking just 3.6% of batters he faces. Not to mention, he generates plenty of chase and the whiff% has come along as he throws more major league innings. It’s been the slider/curve combo that each boast whiff rates over 36% that helps his fastball excel.

Rostered: 7% (Yahoo)

Will Warren, RHP, New York Yankees

Warren, 25, has been tremendous to watch as of late. His season 4.05 ERA is decent for being a second-year player, but the 2.85 FIP, 3.23 SIERA, 30% K rate, and .230 BAA show you that he’s been even better than what the ERA indicates.

This month, Warren has pitched to a sub-2 FIP while punching out over 35% of batters he’s faced. Absolutely elite! He faces the 8-41 Rockies on Sunday.

Rostered: 40% (Yahoo)

Edmundo Sosa, UT, Philadelphia Phillies

Sosa, 29, has been quietly reliable this season, slashing .377/.418/.508/.926 with a 158 wRC+ in 24 games. Through that short sample size, his BB% has nearly doubled and the K% has been cut down by over 6%. His exceptional .409 BA ranks fifth in the month of May.

Speaking about production this month, his opposition, the Athletics pitching staff, has been putrid:

Stat Result Lg Rank
ERA 6.27 29th
FIP 5.32 30th
BAA .268 27th
K-BB% 10.5% 25th
fWAR -0.8 T-30th

It’s easy to see why this could be a favorable matchup.

Rostered: 3% (Yahoo)
