MLB News & Moments: Sánchez Cruises, King Cole Returns

Aces Gonna Ace, White Sox Gonna Slug, CBA's Gonna Bargain

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

Hello everybody, I’m back! Let me tell you, appendicitis is not recommended, but getting married in Portugal is highly recommended. In baseball news, the Cubs managed to end their losing streak at a mere 10 games, and while the NL Central is all above .500, the entire AL West is below .500, which we all expected coming into the season, right? In any case, go visit Sintra, it’s gorgeous.

Today’s Headlines

I am, of course, talking about Cristopher Sánchez and his incredible performance in San Diego yesterday.

A moment to appreciate what we are watchingSimply Sánsational.

Because like, the strikeouts and zero runs? You see? You get it. He threw an even 42 each of his changeup and sinker over the course of the start, which is pleasing symmetry, and overall ran a 38% CSW rate. Sánchez has managed to find another gear this season, as he’s currently rocking a 6-2 record and a minuscule (and MLB-leading) 1.47 ERA. Those seven shutout innings also made franchise (phranchise?) history:

A record that stood for 115 years now belongs to Cristopher Sánchez

Wednesday really just capped off an incredible run this entire month, the man was effectively untouchable:

RT @MLBStats: Cristopher Sánchez's May will go down in history 🔥4-0 (5 GS)39 IP0.00 ERA0.72 WHIP45 Ks

The Phillies completed their sweep of the Padres with the 3-0 win, they’re riding a three-game win streak, and they’re two games back over .500, which doesn’t sound that great until you remember they went on an 8-18 run to start the season.

Ah, Welcome Back Mr. Cole

Yes, I know Wednesday wasn’t actually Gerrit Cole’s return to the mound after his Tommy John surgery, but the appearance against the Rays last week was like a weird tune-up. His performance against the Royals last night was some real vintage Cole Train stuff:

Cole’s velo has looked great since his return, and he dialed the fastball all the way up to a 98.4 mph max over his 6.2 innings of work. It does seem notable that he is still yet to throw a cutter in 2026, even though it was his third-most-used pitch in 2024. I’m interested to see if he’s just shelved it entirely or what.

New York Yankees (@yankeesbot.bsky.social) 2026-05-28T02:18:52.000Z

He came out of the game with only 79 pitches thrown (59 for strikes), and I would have let him finish up the inning at that point, you know? In any case, it’s been two very solid outings from Gerrit, which is great news for the Yankees as Max Fried remains sidelined with a bone bruise in his pitching elbow.

Cole picked up the win on Wednesday, as well, as the Yankees downed the Royals 7-0 to complete their sweep and beat KC for the 14th consecutive game (including the postseason.) It wasn’t the absolute drubbing they gave them on Tuesday, but New York got eight hits and four walks on the night and scored their first run thanks to a triple from…Ben Rice?!

3-bagger for Rice to plate Goldy 👊

New York Yankees (@yankeesbot.bsky.social) 2026-05-28T00:26:55.000Z

Rice added two more RsBI with a single in the seventh inning, and even Ryan McMahon got in on the action with a two-run dinger in the eighth. Which seems more incredible than the Rice triple.

Ryan Oppo Rocket 🚀

So we got our pitching and our hitting out of the way, so let’s round things out with the reason Cole was able to pitch a shutout: Aaron Judge making a fantastic throw from right field to nab Michael Massey at the plate in the third (with an assist from Austin Wells on the excellent tag:)

Don't run on Cap 🫡

With an assist from the O’s, the Yankees currently sit a game and a half behind the Rays in the AL East standings.

A May May No-No? No!

We’re gonna keep the theme of dominant pitching performances going…kind of. Dustin May hasn’t had the best 2026 so far, coming into Wednesday’s start against the Brewers with a 5.00 ERA and a 3-5 record over 10 starts. But for seven innings in Milwaukee, things looked very different.

May absolutely flummoxed the Brewers over seven full innings, striking out nine and only allowing two baserunners: a Jake Bauers HBP in the third and a Sal Frelick catcher’s interference in the third. Bryan Torres tripled in the Cards’ only run in the fourth, scoring Jordan Walker, and it looked like that might be all they needed:

Unfortunately for St. Louis, the crew broke through in the eighth, as Garrett Mitchell hit a double out to left field that Torres nearly got to. You always hear that every no-hitter has a “that play” that saved the thing, and well, I guess every non-no-hitter has to have “that play” that doesn’t get made.

Luis Rengifo followed that up with a bunt single, putting runners on the corners with no outs and it was the end of May’s day. JoJo Romero came in and managed to get two outs on a Frelick grounder and an Andrew Vaughn strikeout, but then Christian Yelich tied things up with a single

YELI TIES IT WITH TWO OUTS IN THE EIGHTH

Milwaukee Brewers (@brewersbot.bsky.social) 2026-05-27T19:46:07.000Z

Followed by a Masyn Winn error on a Jackson Chourio ground ball that would give the Brewers all the lead they needed.

SURE, WHY NOT…Brewers lead ‼️

Milwaukee Brewers (@brewersbot.bsky.social) 2026-05-27T19:48:18.000Z

Milwaukee called on Trevor Megill to close things out, and while Winn did single and steal second, Megill got the job done to pick up his sixth save of the season. Aaron Ashby worked the seventh and eighth, meaning he picked up his ninth win of the year. He currently leads MLB in wins for pitchers with a mere 35 innings pitched. Because of course.

Mr. Sandlin, Pitch Me A Game!

And while we stay in the Central, we’ll switch to the AL and invert things a bit. It was the MLB debut of David Sandlin, and things didn’t get off to a particularly auspicious start as his first pitch was challenged, overturned to a ball, and then his second pitch was deposited in the seats by Byron Buxton:

THE BUCK TRUCK GETS US GOING

Minnesota Twins (@twinsbaseball.bsky.social) 2026-05-27T23:44:55.000Z

I guess David took that personally though, because he went on to retire the next 18 batters and, after the game, told reporters that “I feel like that kind of took the weight off almost, I was like, ‘Man, it can’t get worse than that,’ you know. Like, ‘Let’s go now. Welcome to it.’” And while Sandlin’s debut line of 6 IP, 1H, 1 ER, 0 BB, and 4 K is nothing to scoff at it’s the White Sox offense that really stole the show.

Oh, sorry, did I not mention that the final score was 15-2? Yeah. Chicago tallied up 18 hits and seven walks on Wednesday and it was in the seventh inning (the second five-run inning of the day for the Sox) when the real fireworks happened, starting with a Chase Meidroth grand slam:

Followed immediately by Munetaka Murakami’s 20th dinger of the season:

Mune is currently rocking a .240/.375/.561 line, a 158 wRC+ performance overall. Not bad at all for a guy lots of us had almost written off when he signed with Chicago. If they kept him at 3B I bet he would make a real run at being an All-Star starter. Is that too premature? It is almost June…

(As a 1B he’s gonna have to beat out Nick Kurtz and Ben Rice and well…I foresee some serious ballot stuffing for at least one of those guys.)

First Shots Across The CBA Bow

I dunno if you have heard, but the collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the MLBPA expires at the end of this year. It’s been top of mind for most reporting on the season so far, but yesterday we got our first look at the initial ask from the PA’s side:

hello. I have been at a zoo. here is the press release from the MLBPA regarding negotiations

jen ramos-eisen (@jenramose.online) 2026-05-27T20:29:08.643Z

You can find many more details and context about the proposal in Evan Drellich’s write-up for The Athletic (gift link), but Jen’s post covers all of the high-level points. Unlike the last go-around with the CBA, we won’t have to wait months for the owners’ counterproposal: it’s expected to be released today. They’ve already released their initial reaction to the PA proposal and to nobody’s surprise, they don’t much care for it:

For those interested, which we all will be in December but can justify ignoring while everyone happily plays baseball here in May, the MLBPA made a proposal to the owners today. The owners did not accept it. I would expect this pattern to continue.

By The Numbers

5 runs batted in by Ian Happ in the Cubs’ 10-4 win over the Pirates

1 career save for Kyle Hurt after he handled the ninth against Colorado last night

604 career strikeouts for Cristopher Sánchez after Wednesday’s performance, and he only became a full-time starter in 2023

Best Moments From Yesterday

20/20 AL Vision

While Kyle Schwarber leads all of baseball with 21 home runs and you already saw Murakami’s 20th of the year, Yordan Alvarez didn’t want to fall too far behind. He came into yesterday’s tilt against the Rangers with 18 dingers on the year and well, he did what he does best (see yesterday for another example):

Yordan came up in the ninth inning as well and was intentionally walked as the Astros ended up taking down the Rangers by a score of 4-3.

Barktimore

The Orioles did some damage of their own on Wednesday, dismantling the Rays by a score of 11-2 but you might not have known if you were only following the jumbotron at OPACY:

The Orioles replaced the player pics on their scoreboard tonight with photos of adoptable dogs 😭

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ Imaging came back for Enrique Hernández and it’s not good news. He has a “significant tear” in his oblique and there’s no timeline for his return.

⚾ The Dodgers will likely be without Teoscar Hernández for a bit as he left last night’s game with a left hamstring strain, and his reaction in the dugout did not make it look like a very mild one. Dave Roberts said the best case return is a couple of weeks.

Hunter Greene has thrown his first bullpen session as he works his way back from surgery to remove loose bodies from his pitching elbow that he had in the spring.

⚾ Miami starter Eury Pérez left yesterday’s game with a hamstring spasm, and he will be undergoing imaging to determine the specifics.

⚾ The Angels officially placed Nolan Schanuel on the IL, retroactive to May 24th, due to left ankle inflammation. They called up Nick Madrigal in a corresponding move.

Yennier Cano left yesterday’s game due to right hamstring discomfort.

⚾ Updates on several injured Boston players: Roman Anthony has been taking swings and will hopefully be hitting off a tee this week, Garrett Crochet will throw a multi-inning live BP session early next week, and (well, this one is ominous) Garrett Whitlock received an injection on Wednesday.
