MLB News & Moments You Should Know: 8/16/2024

Weston Wilson joins a small club in a hurry, and more.

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

Hey whoa it’s Friday, I usually see you all on Thursday! What’s happening?! Big thanks to Christian for covering for me yesterday as I had to get up at Way Too Early AM this morning for work, so here I am repaying the favor so he can (hopefully) sleep in on Friday morning. I originally started writing for Pitcher List covering the Thursday game slate, so it is nice to be back covering a nice, light travel day.

Today’s Headlines

Weston Goes For Four, For Nine

Ok so maybe I am delirious. But anyway, Weston Wilson went 4-for-5 as the Phillies trounced the Nats 13-3, and of course, that’s worth a Headline spot.

Oh wait, no it’s not.

Thankfully, Wilson didn’t just go 4-for-5, those four hits were, in order, a triple and single in the fourth, home run in the bottom of the seventh, and a double in the eighth. Hey, that’s a cycle!

Wilson’s played a total of 16 games for Philadelphia this year, and he sure is making the most of it.

So that’s the ninth Philly to hit for the cycle, but I would guess he’s maybe the first one to do it in less than 100 plate appearances.

Yelich Done For 2024

Back on July 24th it was reported that Christian Yelich was seeing a spine specialist to go over options for treating his back, and today he broke the news that the worst-case option of season-ending surgery is the one that has been recommended:

Depending on when you read this Friday, Yelich may already be recovering from the surgery, but either way, he’ll be watching the NL Central-leading Brewers (nine games up on the Reds and Cards!) try to make a deep October run from the sidelines this year. 2024 was shaping up to be a return to MVP form for Yelich, as he put up a .315/.406/.504 line this year with 11 home runs and 21 stolen bases, even with some time missed for injury prior to going on the IL near the end of July, where he’s remained.

There aren’t many details about the specific procedure or recovery timeline for Yelich at this point, but I would have to guess the team will release those in the coming days following the surgery’s outcome.

A Great Day For McCray

Giants rookie Grant McCray played his first MLB game on Wednesday, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout. But Thursday he finally got some ink in the good columns, starting with his first hit (although it is a bunt, I won’t hold it against him):

Hit, done. RBI, done.

But what if he could simply do both at the same time? Well…

We love efficiency.

Ryno Is Cancer Free

In January of 2024, Hall of Famer and Cubs great Ryne Sandberg announced he had started treatment for metastatic prostate cancer, which is not a diagnosis with a very rosy outlook in most cases.

I don’t have much to add other than to heap my own congratulations and well wishes on top of the overflowing pile for Ryno, incredible news.

Best Moments From Yesterday

The Masked Marauder

James McCann broke his nose on July 29, then got surgery to realign everything properly on August 5th, and has spent no time on the IL during the whole process. If anything, he seems to have simply gotten stronger:

He is style, he is grace.

Inside The Parker, Farmer

I was going to be very excited about this inside-the-park-homer from Kyle Farmer:

And that’s because I thought it was a truly rare no-error inside-the-parker. But then I noticed that they charged Texas CF Leody Taveras with one on the play, which just seems unfair. The ball skipped off that little outfield wall jut at an impossible angle, and him trying to play for that carom leads to a worse outcome nearly every time. Oh well, it’s still a fun time, and given that the Twins ended up winning the game 3-2, it ended up being a pretty consequential hit no matter how you want to put it in the books.

Felix Navidad

And we’ll close things out with a fun anniversary of the perfecto thrown by FĂ©lix HernĂĄndez:

King Felix would retain the title of “Most Recent Perfect Game Thrower” for over a decade. I feel like sometimes I forget how incredible he was for pretty much a whole decade even though I watched plenty of his games. Definitely one of my favorite bobbleheads in the collection.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚟ The Twins placed Byron Buxton on the IL with hip inflammation, although they said he has “no structural damage.” Edouard Julien is being called up to fill the roster spot.
