Today’s Headlines

Trout Done for Season

It’s the kind of news baseball fans have been dreading since it was revealed Mike Trout experienced a setback in his rehab. The Los Angeles Angels superstar revealed on Thursday that he suffered a second meniscus tear and will be unable to return in the 2024 season:

Though the Angels’ playoff hopes have all but vanished, there’s still a great deal of joy in watching Trout play baseball. His slew of injuries have prevented him from playing in the second half of the season for several years, a disappointment not only for Angels fans but for baseball fans in general.

Trout will finish the season with ten home runs in just 29 games played. We wish the superstar a speedy recovery and cross our fingers that we can enjoy a full season of vintage Trout in 2025.

Cubbies Tauch it Off

The Chicago Cubs functioned as minor sellers during the trade deadline, with their disappointing season preventing them from going all-in on a playoff run. Though it’s looking like a lost season, that doesn’t mean they can’t give their rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, a tough time when visiting the Friendly Confines.

Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth and imposing closer Ryan Helsley on the mound, Cody Bellinger socked a home run to cut the deficit to one:

A few batters later and down to their last strike, Dansby Swanson took a base hit to left field to bring home Nico Hoerner and tie the game. With a chance to win it, Mike Tauchman slapped a fastball at the top of the zone the other way to send everybody home:

The Cubs will need to string together several more wins to return to relevance in the postseason picture, but that won’t stop them from being a thorn in the side of their NL Central rivals. We’ll get three more games in this series of a classic rivalry, capped off by a Sunday Night Baseball game this weekend.

Another O’s Prospect Gets the Call

The Baltimore Orioles have one of the best farm systems in baseball thanks to their collection of talented hitters stashed at the Triple-A level. We’ve seen players like Jackson Holliday and Heston Kjerstad get their first tastes of big-league action this season to varying degrees of success, and late on Thursday night, news circulated that yet another top prospect will be getting his turn with the major league club: Coby Mayo.

As the tweet above shows, Mayo has been crushing the ball in Triple-A this season and should provide an immediate boost to a lineup that just lost Jordan Westburg to a fractured hand. The Orioles should make the move official on Friday and Mayo will make his debut on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians.

Postseason Schedule Revealed

We got our first look at the league’s postseason schedule on Thursday night, with Wild Card rounds beginning on October 1st:

One interesting caveat on the World Series schedule: if both Championship Series wrap up by October 19th, the league will move up the start of the Fall Classic from October 25th to the 22nd. It’s the first time a flexible schedule like this has been proposed, which can help pennant-winning teams stay in form by shortening the break between series. Don’t Mess with Pasquatch

It was a two-homer day for Vinnie Pasquantino against the Detroit Tigers, beginning with a three-run shot in the first inning…

Relief pitchers are some of the biggest unsung heroes in baseball, so let’s give Ben Joyce some props for this tear he’s been on:

Signing Bonus Record Set

A new record for signing bonuses is a great thing to see for players drafted this year.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ The Baltimore Orioles made a ton of moves on Thursday in response to the trade deadline and various injuries. I’ll let the team summarize them all for me:

⚾ The Yankees optioned pitchers Nick Burdi and Ron Marinaccio to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Cardinals sent SP Steven Matz on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Memphis.

⚾ Several other players acquired via trade were activated by their new teams on Thursday: Michael Lorenzen (KC), Erick Fedde (STL), Mark Canha (SFG), and Kevin Kiermaier (LAD) are just a few examples. Keep an eye on these teams with new members to see how their rosters will change with their new additions.

Tigers activated SS Javier Báez from the 10-day IL.

⚾ Guardians sent SP Matthew Boyd on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Columbus.
