Today’s Headlines

White Sox lose 20th straight game

The White Sox’s 7 runs scored on Sunday was the most they’ve put up in over a month, but it wasn’t enough to break their losing streak. The Minnesota Twins wrapped up a 3-game sweep of the scuffling Chicago White Sox, who have now lost 20 consecutive games. The Sox have surpassed the Baltimore Orioles‘ 19-straight losses in 2021, and they’re barreling toward the MLB record of 23 consecutive losses set by the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies. The Chicago White Sox will have a good chance to snap their streak as they begin a 3-game series against the Oakland Athletics later tonight.

3 IBBs for Judge, DJ walks it off

Aaron Judge has been carrying the New York Yankees offense all year, but Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider took the bat out of Judge’s hands again on Sunday. When asked why he decided to intentionally walk Judge with the bases empty on Saturday, Schneider said “I honestly didn’t feel like seeing him swing.” That mindset continued into Sunday’s game when the Blue Jays decided to intentionally walk Judge in three of his five plate appearances. When the game was on the line in the 10th inning, the Blue Jays deployed a five-man infield against struggling veteran DJ LeMahieu who drove the ball right up the middle to walk it off for the Yanks.

Wheeler and Harper help Phillies snap skid

The Philadelphia Phillies came into Sunday having lost 6 straight games, but Zack Wheeler and Bryce Harper helped right the ship. Wheeler put together a masterful performance that silenced the Seattle Mariners‘ bats. He pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing just 2 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 9. Harper’s 3-hit day ended the worst slump of his career and the Phillies’ losing streak. Along with Harper’s 25th home run of the season, the Phillies also got a leadoff home run from Kyle Schwarber and solo shots from Bryson Stott and Alec Bohm.

This & That

The segment that highlights some top performers worthy of praise! Sunday’s players include:

Best Moments From Yesterday

David Peralta does it on both sides of the ball

What’s better than robbing a home run? Robbing a home run then hitting one of your own in back-to-back innings!

Wild catches galore

I saw a few impressive catches from players and fans alike that I want to highlight! First, Brandon Marsh made a catch without even trying. He lost the ball in the sun, looked to give up on it, and then it landed in his glove.

Then we have an usher for the Twins making a heroic leap to save a reporter’s computer in the press box.

And last but not least is a fan making a pretty great catch on Brent Rooker’s home run. The fan lunged for the ball before another fan caught him so he wouldn’t fall over. A+ all around for the fans in Oakland!

Everyone’s in the Olympic spirit

The folks who run @Cut4 must also be spending every night watching gymnastics at the Olympics!

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ 1B Yandy Díaz left Sunday’s game early after taking a ground ball to the wrist, but the Rays are hopeful he’ll be ready for the Rays’ series opener on Tuesday.

⚾ OF Byron Buxton is ok! He left the game after making a great catch and laying on the warning track for a few seconds, but his departure was entirely precautionary, especially with the Twins’ big lead. He should be good to go for today’s game.

⚾ OF Ian Happ was scratched with left shoulder discomfort. Consider him day-to-day.
