MLB News & Moments You Should Know: 9/11/2025

Trouble in Detroit, Some A Rizz, and a Trio of Baltimorean Moments.

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

I’m continuing my summer of age inappropriate concertgoing (it was Warped Tour back in June) by going to see Underoath, Rise Against, and Papa Roach in tyool 2025. This story is baseball-related, however, as I saw the show in Brideport, CT in the former home of the Bridgeport Bluefish. The Bluefish were an independent league team that existed until 2017 when they were supposed to move to North Carolina, but simply went under instead. The venue is clearly a former ballpark, with the stage in CF, the floor area making up the entire infield, and two bars named “The Dugout Bar” in what were quite clearly the dugouts. It was a fun time.

Toxic Environment At The Tigers Comes To Light

A brief warning that the material found in the summaries, quotes, and links below in this item pertains to sexual harassment and workplace abuse, and may be upsetting to some readers.

At least eight men employed by the Tigers, its business arm or broadcast partner have been accused of misconduct toward women since 2023, including four VPs and two other high-ranking employees, an investigation by The Athletic found.✍️ @brittghiroli.bsky.social:www.nytimes.com/athletic/661…

The Athletic (@theathletic.com) 2025-09-10T11:07:10.462Z

In a very lengthy and detailed article from The Athletic, Brittany Ghiroli and Alex Andrejev have assembled reports from people working for the Tigers, including the business and broadcast wings of the organization, that detail “misconduct” towards women who worked for the team. You’ll need a subscription to read the entire piece, but the opening paragraphs lay out the gist of the issues:

At least eight men employed by the Detroit Tigers, its business arm or broadcast partner have been accused of misconduct toward women since 2023, including four vice presidents and two other high-ranking employees, an investigation by The Athletic found.

Seven of those eight were accused of mistreating women employed by Ilitch Sports and Entertainment (IS+E), which operates the MLB franchise, the NHL’s Red Wings, Comerica Park, Little Caesars Arena and other entertainment entities. The allegations against the men ranged from offensive comments to physical confrontation.

Six of the men either resigned, were fired or did not have their contracts renewed — three exited in a six-month period beginning last November. One vice president was suspended after The Athletic requested comment about the allegations against him late last week.

“The dysfunction is woven into the culture. It feels like a bunch of guys who can do whatever they want,” said a current male employee. “It’s not a place women can feel safe.”

The Athletic has been investigating the reports since the Tigers’ assistant GM resigned suddenly at the beginning of August, which turned out to be due to allegedly sending lewd photos to female staffers, and it seems like Sam Menzin’s behavior was the tip of the iceberg for Detroit. While most of the reports seem to involve what I suppose would be “back office” roles, there was the public dismissal of broadcaster Craig Monroe in July due to accusations of sexual abuse, it appears that Cameron Maybin was more quietly dropped due to harassment within the company:

In 2023, former Tigers player Cameron Maybin joined Bally Sports Detroit (now FanDuel Sports Network) as a pre- and post-game analyst. Early in the season, Maybin allegedly told one team employee he liked to watch her walk away from him, according to that woman and a person she told about the remark around the time it occurred. At least two women received late-night calls or messages from Maybin that they considered inappropriate. In one text message, viewed by The Athletic, Maybin wrote: “probably not the best idea we hang I’m trying to stay married.” In another, after the woman declined to socialize with Maybin, he wrote: “You can always stop by, my door is wide open for you.”

An HR official began asking employees about Maybin’s behavior in May 2023. Maybin still appeared on the broadcast the rest of the season. He didn’t return in 2024.

While the Tigers have faced three lawsuits relating to employment discrimination in the last few years, it doesn’t appear that any of the new stories reported by The Athletic for this piece have lead to any official action in the court system at this time. However, that may change given the severity of some of them and the fact that they’re now public.

Rizzo Retires

Anthony Rizzo sat in The Bronx and watched the Yankees get absolutely demolished 12-2 on Tuesday night and apparently decided it was a sign that he was done with baseball. He announced his retirement on Wednesday, and the Cubs announced that they will be honoring him on Saturday.

Rizzo was one of my favorite players in baseball as a Cub and Yankee, and I know I’m far from the only person who feels that way. The Cubs put together a retrospective video that features both his on- and off-field heroics:

I’m looking forward to what I can only imagine will be a pretty special ceremony this weekend as the Cubs faithful get to celebrate Rizzo again.

Sweep Out The Barrel

The Rangers beat the Brewers by a score of 6-3 on Wednesday, which marks the first time Milwaukee has been swept since the season opener against the Yankees (remember torpedo bats?!), which is a pretty good run! While the Brew Crew put up a pair of runs in the first inning thanks to back-to-back solo shots by Brice Turang:

and Jackson Chourio:

It didn’t hold up, as Freddy Peralta truly leaned into his Professor Chaos moniker, going five innings with nine strikeouts, but also giving up five runs (all earned) on six hits and a pair of walks. Jake Burger got the Rangers on the board in the second with a solo home run of his own:

And then in the third, Texas scored their second and third runs in… unconventional ways:

But you know that Burger isn’t content with just one dong, so he hit a two-run dinger in the fifth just to make sure Texas got some breathing room:

It was a Rhys Hoskins RBI single and a Rowdy Tellez groundout (I remain absolutely giddy that Rowdy and Burger are teammates) that added each team’s last run of the day as Phil Maton got himself a two-out save, striking out one. While the Brewers still have a pretty comfortable 5.5 game lead over the Cubs, the resurgent Rangers find themselves a mere 2.5 games behind the Astros in the AL West, and are only 1.5 games behind Seattle for the third Wild Card spot. The AL West is for sure the division to watch over the last month of the regular season.

Best Moments From Yesterday

Skenes, But Spelled With 200 Ks

While he only pitched five innings on 64 pitches, Paul Skenes managed to notch eight strikeouts against Baltimore on Wednesday, one of which was his 200th of the season:

That's 200 strikeouts on the season for Paul Skenes 👀

Pittsburgh Pirates (@pirates.com) 2025-09-10T23:20:49.747Z

He ended the day with 203 punchies for the season so far, which is the third-most in the majors. It marks the ninth time a Pirates pitcher has done it in franchise history, which extends all the way back to 1882.

Triple Firsts

We’re actually gonna stay in Baltimore for the entire “Best Moments” section because that’s just how things shake out sometimes, and we got to see a No. 1 overall pick syzygy as Paul Skenes pitched to Jackson Holliday with Henry Davis behind the dish.

I do hate to say it, but this feels like a “one of these things is not like the other” type of situation.

O, How Dramatic!

And to finish off the fun stuff from Camden Yards, how about the finish to the game last night? Skenes left in the fifth inning with a 1-0 lead, but the O’s would tie it up in the eighth thanks to a Jackson Holliday single to drive in Colton Cowser, and then it was Dylan Beavers‘ job to take care of things in the 10th:

This means that the Orioles were not just the only team to have Alex Fast in the booth last night, and not just the only AL East team to actually win, but it means they’ve now walked off four of their last five games:

Not too shabby.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ Minnesota pitcher David Festa has been diagnosed with neurological thoracic outlet syndrome. His season is done, and given everything we know about TOS, it seems likely that he will miss time in 2026 as well.

⚾ The Royals have placed Michael Wacha on the 7-day concussion IL due to an off-field accident. He was sent back to KC for further evaluation, and there’s no timetable for a return yet.

Xander Bogaerts has been cleared to resume baseball activity after he fractured his foot at the end of August. San Diego has said they expect Bogaerts back for the playoffs, so this news is unlikely to help your fantasy squads.

Houston has placed Luis García Jr. on the 15-day IL due to right elbow discomfort. Garcia only just came off the IL a week ago after losing all of 2024 to setbacks following Tommy John in 2023.

Masyn Winn has a torn meniscus in his right knee, but the Cardinals are planning to have him play through it for the remainder of the season. Winn has apparently had the tear for months now, which may help explain his below-average offensive numbers since June.
