Today’s Headlines
Back In the NY Groove
With Cam Schlittler leading the AL Cy Young race and Tarik Skubal starting to find his best stuff after his injury stint, last night’s Tigers-Yankees matchup was supposed to be a tight pitching duel. Instead, a quick power surge from Detroit led to an early exit for Schlittler, while Skubal at least kept his end of the bargain. New York’s ace had allowed six homers all season, only to shockingly allow three in the first inning, as Kerry Carpenter, Riley Greene, and Spencer Torkelson teed off to give the Tigers an early 4-o lead. Cam would exit after only four frames, with a season-high six runs allowed that inflated his ERA to 2.08. Meanwhile, Skubal took advantage of the run support to cruise through six innings, allowing only two runs (one unearned) over six innings, as he won for the first time since coming back from the IL. With the Tigers still far from any playoff hopes, this game could serve as a perfect showcase for all the teams that covet the lefty at the trade deadline.

Nasty Sanchez
Following a rough five-run outing against the Nationals, lefty ace Cristopher Sánchez provided a more Sanchez-like performance, dominating the Pirates to earn his tenth win of 2026. He started the game with plenty of swing-and-miss stuff, striking out five of the first six batters faced. From there, he adjusted to a contact-heavy approach, squashing all potential Pittsburgh rallies while tossing seven scoreless frames and finishing with nine Ks. Pittsburgh’s Bubba Chandler proved a worthy opponent for most of the contest, but the Phillies rallied late against him and the bullpen, ending with a comfortable 8-0 win as Trea Turner capped the night with a two-run homer. Sanchez continues to make a case towards a close race for the NL Cy Young against Jacob Misiorowski, as he is now second in all of MLB in the pitching triple crown.

Justin Time
Pitching in Sacramento has been a tough assignment for many MLB pitchers, as the combination of minor league dimensions and the strong A’s lineup usually leads to many high-scoring affairs. Justin Wrobleski apparently didn’t get the memo, continuing his breakout season as the Dodgers cruised to a 9-3 win over the A’s. LA’s offense was quick to provide plenty of run support, jumping to a 5-1 lead by the third, with Wrobleski in command since the beginning. The lefty allowed three runs in seven frames with 11 Ks, as he earned his 10th win of the season. Despite a quiet game from Shohei Ohtani, the rest of the Dodgers’ offense showed up in bunches, highlighted by a four-hit, four-RBI game from Tommy Edman. The win added to LA’s MLB-best 56-30 record, as manager Dave Roberts got his 1,000th career win as a skipper.

Texas’ Summer Son
With game-time temperatures soaring over 90 degrees, the Texas Rangers showed that the heat never bothered them anyway, as an impressive Jacob deGrom led them to a 4-2 win over the Guardians. While Cleveland took an early 2-0 lead thanks to a Kyle Manzardo homer, that would be all the damage allowed by deGrom, who finished his performance with only those two runs allowed over seven innings, with nine strikeouts added to his ledger. While the Rangers tied the game quickly, it all turned thanks to an embarrassing brain cramp from rookie Cooper Ingle, who threw a ball into the stands with a runner on second. Alas, his catch had only been the second out of the seventh inning, as Ezequiel Duran was awarded home plate in the gaffe. Texas has now won six straight, joining the Rays with the best active winning streak in baseball.

Hold Your Horses
In a season that has featured impressive hitting paired with lousy pitching in Washington, the Nationals had a rare game where both sides of the ball were stellar. Cade Cavalli had a career day against the Red Sox, allowing only an unearned run over seven innings, with one hit allowed versus 13 strikeouts. Even as it took Washington until the seventh to take the lead and make Cavalli a winner, it was still an encouraging sign for the Nats, who could become a surprise playoff contender with just enough pitching to carry them. Despite the pristine outing, Cavalli’s performance was stained by an ugly incident in the fourth, as he had a heated exchange with Boston’s Willson Contreras, leading to a benches-clearing brawl that ended with four ejections, including Contreras, who was ejected for the second straight day. The 8-1 Washington win included a 12-hit effort, but MLB will likely look into the incident and could discipline Cavalli for his role in the dust-up.

By The Numbers
20 With a commanding 14-3 win over the Rockies, the Marlins finished June with a 20-6 record. It is only the second time in their franchise history with a 20+ win calendar month.
5 Tampa Bay’s Junior Caminero hit a homer for a fifth straight game, as the Rays cruised to an easy win in Kansas City. Caminero became the fourth player aged 22 or younger with a five-game homer streak, joining Brian McCann, Ronald Acuña, Jr., and Jack Clark.
7 With a grand slam against the Twins, Yordan Alvarez not only guided his team to victory, but he also tied a Houston franchise record with his seventh career grand slam. He matched Jose Altuve, Carlos Lee, and Alex Bregman and is likely to be the lone record holder in the near future.
250 In yet another loss to the Diamondbacks, San Francisco slugger Rafael Devers hit his 250th career homer. He becomes the 26th active player to reach that milestone.
Best Moments From Yesterday
Coming Home
Bo Bichette has had a rough debut season in Queens, as a recent hot streak has led him to finally get over the .650 OPS. His tough season has been the reflection of the Mets’ disastrous 2026, but at least there’s a place where he will also be considered a hero. Back in Toronto for the first time since signing with New York, the homegrown Blue Jay was given a prodigal son’s welcome, with a nice tribute video and a fitting standing ovation from the home crowd. Bichette took in the moment and went 1-for-4 as the Mets outlasted Toronto with a 3-0 win behind the strong pitching of Nolan McLean and the bullpen. With the Mets going nowhere and Toronto fading fast, many will always wonder if Bichette staying with the Jays would have made things different for all.
All love for Bo Bichette in Toronto 💙
Kevin Gausman swapped baseballs so his former teammate, Bo Bichette, could get a prolonged standing ovation in his return to Toronto 👏

Bubble Boy
In a game that included 13 hits per team, nine homers, and a late comeback rally that fell just short, it was probably a defensive play that will be mostly remembered from it. Pete Crow-Armstrong, who had homered an inning prior, stepped up to the plate with a chance to extend Chicago’s lead, but instead fell victim to the defensive genius of Manny Machado. The third baseman tracked a soft pop-up with a perfect route and then made the sliding catch more impressive by blowing a bubble in the process. Machado was also part of the fireworks display, but his team lost 9-7 in the end, as not even a rare multi-homer game from Fernando Tatis Jr. was enough to match the Cubs.

Honoring Mr. Baseball
The city of Milwaukee and the Brewers honored the late Bob Uecker with a massive mural in the city during a ceremony that reunited hundreds of people and current members of the franchise. The legendary broadcaster spent 54 years calling Brewers games and became a national institution. After his passing, multiple events have continued to carry his legacy, as he will always be associated with the city and its baseball team. On the field, the Brewers completed the ceremony with a quintessential Brew Crew win, toppling the Reds 7-2, using a combination of strong pitching, long balls, and situational hitting to earn their 52nd win of the season.

Injuries and Other Moves
⚾The Rangers scratched Corey Seager from last night’s lineup just before the game against Cleveland got started, due to back tightness. Injuries continue to be a recurring issue for the shortstop, so the team probably decided it was better to be cautious. His status is considered day-to-day.
⚾ The Marlins have placed reliever Anthony Bender on the 15-day IL due to a stress reaction in his right shin. Bender has been one of Miami’s top relievers, putting up a 2.62 ERA in mostly high-leverage spots. There is no clear timetable for his return, but it is important to note that he was shut down late last season due to the same ailment.
