Today’s Headlines
Phightin’ Phils
Despite a dynamic offense that still leads MLB in runs scored, the Nationals face the daily burden of a bad bullpen that can turn any lead into a loss, as evidenced by their 21 losses from ahead. Last night provided another glimpse of Washington’s volatility, as an early 5-0 lead turned into an embarrassing loss against the Phillies. The Phils initially mounted a comeback by scoring six unanswered by the top of the eighth, but the offense appeared to bail the bullpen out by scoring three in the bottom part, giving the Nats an 8-6 lead entering the ninth. Brad Lord entered as the closer-du-jour with a 2.29 ERA, having allowed only two runs over 14 innings in June. Lord got two quick strikeouts, but what looked like an easy save quickly became a nightmare, as a Trea Turner single led to a game-tying homer from Brandon Marsh. From there, eight straight Phillies would reach, including a three-run homer from Bryson Stott that gave Philadelphia the lead, and was capped by a Turner RBI single to give them an eight-run frame. In the end, the 14-9 football-like score served as a perfect reflection of what a good offense like Philadelphia’s can do against a bad bullpen like Washington’s.

Central Heroes
Despite the relative lack of strength of the AL Central, it is still impressive to see how the White Sox have turned things around in 2026. Last night, they seized sole possession of first place in the division by defeating the Guardians 2-1, adding yet another one-run win to their ledger. With the Sean tandem on the mound, Burke to start and Newcomb to close, Chicago had enough pitching to outlast a strong start from Parker Messick, who struck out ten over 7.2 innings. Despite only amassing three hits and a walk, the Sox made the most of them with a Colson Montgomery RBI single and a solo homer from Miguel Vargas that provided the winning margin. With Cleveland facing tough injuries and Detroit failing to launch, the White Sox look more and more like the favorite to win the division.

All Apologies
Following Sunday’s bizarre finger-wagging incident, it was reported that Rafael Devers apologized to manager Tony Vitello, labeling it all as a misunderstanding. Despite many expecting a Devers benching, the lefty slugger was part of the lineup to start the home series against the A’s, contributing with an RBI single that provided an insurance run in San Francisco’s 3-1 win. The biggest story of the game ended up being Robbie Ray, as the southpaw had his best outing of the season to limit the mighty A’s offense to one unearned run over eight innings, working around four walks to earn his sixth win of the season. While the Giants are unlikely to turn things around and their veterans like Devers will be part of many trade conversations, it was nice to see them enjoy a deserved team win, including a two-hit day from Jung-Hoo Lee that raised his average to .331.

Lollipop-gate Redemption
The baseball season is so long that it becomes inevitable for small controversies to arise constantly. The latest came on Monday, as the ever-eccentric Jazz Chisholm Jr., Jr. irritated some people, including his manager, by having a lollipop while playing defense. As the Yankees lost that game, the story took on extra importance despite its harmlessness. The other side of the long baseball season is that these stories blow over, especially as things can turn around in just a day, which is exactly what Jazz did. With the Yanks trailing 2-1 against Casey Mize, Chisholm, Jr. turned the game around with one swing, as his 12th homer of the season gave New York a lead they would not relinquish. Carlos Rodón had a strong effort to earn the win, with three runs allowed over 5.1 frames. The Yankee bullpen then took over and posted zero after zero to close out the 4-3 win. It is not confirmed, but Jazz probably had a few lollipops to celebrate in the clubhouse.

Early Madness
With the city of Toronto hosting a World Cup game in the afternoon, the Blue Jays were forced to move their start time to an early 4 pm ET slot. The strange schedule was not a deterrent for the 38,000+ who showed up at Rogers Centre, and they were treated to a very entertaining affair. The return of Shane Bieber to the mound was not as good as expected (four runs in 3.2 innings), but the Jays rode a couple of two-run homers from Luis Urías and Daulton Varsho to give them a 6-4 lead entering the ninth. A defensive miscue led to a rare blown save from Tyler Rogers, as Houston tied things at six and sent the game to extras. As both teams failed to score their free runner in the tenth, Joey Loperfido emerged as an unlikely hero in the eleventh, blasting his first homer of the season with two men on base, and providing the winning runs for the 9-7 final. In the end, the game took more than three and a half hours, as Toronto missed its chance to finally get over the .500 mark.

By The Numbers
1,002 With a four-strikeout performance in a win against the Rangers, Sandy Alcantara became the all-time strikeout leader for the Marlins franchise. He surpassed Ricky Nolasco, who finished his Miami tenure with 1,001 Ks.
30 Washington’s Nasim Nuñez became the first player to reach 30 stolen bases in 2026, boasting an elite 91% success rate in his attempts. Nuñez has more steals by himself than three MLB franchises (Detroit, Houston, and San Francisco).
8 The Phillies scored eight runs in the top of the ninth as part of their improbable comeback win in Washington. This is the highest-scoring inning for Philadelphia since September 27, 2015, when they also scored eight against the Nationals.
24 After going hitless in his first at-bat, Zack Gelof was removed from the game following an unfortunate play while defending second base. This means that his 24-game hitting streak was snapped. It was the second-longest streak of 2026, so far.
Best Moments From Yesterday
Mamma Mia!
After a disappointing rookie season and an uneven start to 2026, many wondered if Kansas City’s prized prospect Jac Caglianone would ever fulfill his promise as a big-time power hitter. In the past week, he has finally looked the part of a franchise cornerstone, hitting homer after homer to fire up the Royals. Last night, he began things with a 443-foot moonshot, then added a second homer for good measure, with both coming off tough lefty Shane McLanahan. The power outburst paced Kansas City, as they cruised to a 12-5 over the Rays, who have been nearly unbeatable at home this season. This marked the third multi-homer game in June for Caglianone, as he owns a 1.197 OPS for the month.

Men Without Hats
The Cardinals and Diamondbacks delivered one of the best games of Tuesday’s slate, as it all remained scoreless through eight before a ninth-inning outburst from both teams ended in a 4-3 Arizona victory. The stalemate was made possible in part by a bonkers Geraldo Perdomo double play, as St. Louis had the bases loaded and only one out as they tried to open the scoring. While Nelson Velazaquez’s pop-up made its way to the outfield, three Arizona fielders were on a crash course towards the ball, especially as Corbin Carroll and Perdomo appeared to collide as the ball was caught. As both of their hats dropped to the floor, Ivan Herrera tried to take advantage of the confusion, but Perdomo had the presence of mind to fire a laser to home plate, cutting the potential run by mere inches. The unusual out increased Arizona’s odds of winning by more than 20%.
That's certainly one way to turn a double play 😅 pic.twitter.com/ftH89ZFxhI

Gilmour Boy
A day before their national team faces mighty Brazil in a pivotal World Cup game, Scotland fans continued their East Coast trek by visiting Marlins Park in Miami. While this invasion was not as impressive as their showing at Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, it was still notorious enough to warrant a nod by the home team. The Marlins gave Scottish player Billy Gilmour a chance to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and he delivered a strike to make it all the more special. The Scots may have been a good luck charm for the Fish, as Miami prevailed 6-4 against Texas, with Sandy Alcantara making some history in the process.

Injuries and Other Moves
⚾ Juan Soto exited last night’s game with left back tightness, as he was clearly hurting after his second plate appearance. The extent of his injury is unknown, but it could become the final blow for a Mets team that is still far from any playoff spot. Soto’s status is day-to-day, but he already had a lengthy IL stint at the beginning of the season.
⚾ The Padres announced that starting pitcher Lucas Giolito will move to the IL with right elbow inflammation. The severity of the injury is still undetermined, but it could be concerning for someone like Giolito, who has battled several arm issues throughout his career. Even as he has not been his old self in San Diego, this still represents a tough blow for the Friars, as they will give veteran J.P. Sears a chance to return to the majors.
⚾ The Royals have placed Maikel Garcia on the 10-day IL with a muscle strain in his left hand. This injury has bothered Garcia for several weeks now, and could explain his recent slump, with only a .562 OPS since the middle of May. Kansas City hopes that this time to rest gets the third baseman back to his usual self, as he is expected to be a prime offensive contributor. In his place, veteran Josh Rojas was called up from AAA.
