Notes

  • Just a friendly reminder, the entire Nationals-Mets series was postponed.
  • Also, a few teams who have scheduled Sunday off: The Rays, Marlins, Mariners and Giants. A few of those bullpens are ripe for speculating for saves, so you’ll be even more limited than usual in that regard.
  • Chad Green earned his fifth career save Saturday, but don’t expect the sixth to come anytime too soon. Aroldis Chapman’s two-game suspension is over, so adjust your Yankee bullpen expectations accordingly.

  • The Dodgers are always a worthy team to target when trying to vulture a win, but it seems even more than usual with Julio Urías as Sunday’s probable starter. Though he completed five or more innings in seven of his 11 regular season outings last year, the Dodgers figure to be careful with their 24-year-old lefty. Former Cardinal Austin Gomber will be making his Rockies debut opposite Urías.
  • Speaking of the Dodgers, Kenley Jansen was called upon to record a five-out save last night. He threw 24 pitches. Blake Treinen gave up a two-run home run to Josh Fuentes and Victor Gonzalez retired just one of the four Colorado batters he faced.

  • Alex Colomé got himself pointed in the right direction. After blowing the save in his debut with the Twins, Colomé pitched a 1-2-3 inning to finish off the Brewers. He has yet to strike out a batter, however, while Taylor Rogers now has four Ks in two perfect innings so far this year.
  • Anthony Bass also got himself back on track, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in a non-save situation with the Marlins up 12-7. He had a pair of whiffs and three called strikes among his nine pitches on the night.

  • César Valdez earned his second save for Baltimore. Of his 22 pitches, 16 were changeups. He got three whiffs on that pitch and the only changeup put in play had a 64.9 mph exit velocity. Dillon Tate set up for Valdez, who has pitched back-to-back days. If Baltimore has a save chance today it may go to lefty Tanner Scott.
  • While Scott may be a solid play for save speculation, it’s the Orioles’ opponent who may have the best bullpen to try to vulture a win from. Bruce Zimmermann is making his second career start for Baltimore opposite Garrett Richards, who only surpassed 85 pitches in four of his 10 starts last season. There’s a decent chance that if you can predict the first man out of that Boston bullpen today you’ll steal a W. Maybe Matt Andriese? If you’re that desperate, sure.

  • Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for the Cubs, but it wasn’t in a save situation. He struck out the side in order to preserve a 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh. This marks the first time Kimbrel has struck out the side in order since his final appearance with the Red Sox Sept. 30, 2018.
  • Archie Bradley setup for Hector Neris to protect a 4-0 lead after an incredible Zack Wheeler start. Neris was announced as the closer, and though this was not a save situation, it seemed to provide further clarity in the Philadelphia bullpen.

  • Rafael Montero got a four-out save for the Mariners last night, but Kendall Graveman’s performance was also very impressive. Graveman pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Seattle and struck out five of the seven batters he faced, topping out at 98.6 mph on his sinker.
  • With both Raisel Iglesias and Mike Mayers unavailable after pitching back-to-back days, Junior Guerra finished off a 5-3 victory for the Angels last night. He entered with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, the Angels lineup tallied three runs against Evan Marshall in the bottom of that inning and Guerra picked up the win.

  • Nick Wittgren had a disastrous first appearance of the year for Cleveland. He entered the game with his team trailing Detroit 2-1 and gave up three runs on three hits and a pair of walks. He issued multiple walks in an outing just once in 25 outings last season.
  • Bryan Garcia of Detroit earned a four-out save against Cleveland and needed just 14 pitches to do so. He also struck out a batter. It’s not usually noteworthy when a reliever records exactly one strikeout, but Garcia failed to record a K in 17 of his 26 appearances last season.

  • Rafael Dolis, who finished last season as the Blue Jays’ closer, gave up a pair of runs in an outing in which he walked three batters.
  • Brooks Raley earned a save for the Astros, but it was in a game that finished with a score of 9-1. Raley took over in the eighth inning with Oakland runners on first and second base and Houston leading 5-1. The Astros added four runs in the top of the frame.

  • Ryan Weathers also earned a non-traditional save for the Padres last night. He pitched the final three innings of a 7-0 victory over the Diamondbacks, giving up just one hit while striking out three batters.
  • Jordan Hicks made his 2021 debut for the Cardinals, pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning with St. Louis trailing 9-3. It’s certainly possible Hicks pitches his way into high-leverage work at some point this summer, but he’s clearly behind some of the other Cardinals relievers in the pecking order at the moment.

  • Chris Archer and Collin McHugh had disastrous 2021 debuts for the Rays. Archer entered in the fifth inning and gave up four runs (three earned) over two innings of work. McHugh handled the eighth inning and gave up three runs
  • Kansas City’s Josh Staumont was Saturday’s hardest thrower, topping out at 100.3 mph.
