It was a relatively drama-free Thursday in the big leagues this week, with the three hottest teams in the league continuing to roll. Let’s get into it.
Today’s Headlines
Cubs’ Win Streak Gets Historic
The Chicago Cubs won their 15th straight game at home yesterday with their 8-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds, marking their first drama-free win of the week. After several walk-off wins a row, a dominant pitching performance by ace Shota Imanaga (6 IP, 1 ER, 10 K, 6 H, 3 BB) combined with a seven-run fourth inning by the Chicago bats allowed for a pretty stress-free day at Wrigley in this one. The Cubs home winning streak gets a rest this weekend when they travel to Arlington to take on the Texas Rangers, with their nine-game overall winning streak still on the line. Meanwhile the Reds will try and recover from back-to-back sweeps when they travel back home to welcome the Houston Astros.
Rays Continue to Roll
The Tampa Bay Rays extended their own winning streak yesterday to seven games with their 8-4 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway. Chandler Simpson broke a 3-3 deadlock in the top of the sixth inning with a two-run single and the Tampa bullpen would go on to nail down the victory from there. Simpson would later add an RBI triple to the tally before Junior Caminero put the game to bed with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.
Tampa will stay in Boston for three more games this weekend.
Theeee Yankees Win (Again)
Tampa’s win kept them a half game behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East after New York beat the Texas Rangers 9-2 early Thursday afternoon. New York pieced together a solid pitching performance by their bullpen in this one after Ryan Weathers was a late scratch due to illness, and Cody Bellinger stayed hot at the plate with three more hits and two more RBI, with his 28 total RBI now placing him in the top-10 in the MLB.
The Yankees will travel to Milwaukee this weekend to take on the Brewers, while the Ranger will look to rebound at home against those red-hot Cubs.
By The Numbers
22 Shota Imanaga induced 22 swing and misses in his electric performance over Cincinnati yesterday, the most of any pitcher on the day. Â
6’7″ Per Sarah Langs, the Yankees will become the first team in MLB history with multiple position players 6’7″ or taller with the reported call-up of Spencer Jones, who joins fellow titan Aaron Judge.
9 Per Elias Sports Bureau, the Chicago Cubs are the first team with multiple 9+ game win streaks in their first 38 games of a season since the 1955 Dodgers.Â
1935 The Cubs’ current 15-game home win streak is their longest since 1935, when they won 18 in a row at Wrigley Field.  Â
