MLB News & Moments: Edgar Quero’s Blast Gives White Sox Bragging Rights

Mets overcome amazing odds to force extras, beat Yankees.

It has taken until today, the beginning of the eighth full week of the MLB season, for several key division rivals to finally square off for the first time. Today, at least four of those series begin as the Milwaukee Brewers host the Chicago Cubs, the San Diego Padres host the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Detroit Tigers host the Cleveland Guardians and the New York Yankees host the Toronto Blue Jays. The season slate for all of these series is 0-0. How it ends could determine not only who wins the division, but who makes the playoffs.

Today’s Headlines

White Sox Walk Off Cubs To Take Crosstown Classic

The Chicago Cubs are where they are because of two 10-game winnings streaks. Even so, their advantage in the NL Central is minimal. That is because outside of that 20-0 stretch, the Cubs are just 9-18. Two of those losses came this weekend thanks to their little brother from the South Side. Edgar Quero hit a walk-off two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th as the Chicago White Sox pulled out a 9-8 triumph over the Cubs to take two out of three games in the Crosstown Classic. The White Sox nearly won this in regulation as rookie Tristan Peters hit a three-run bomb with two outs in the bottom of the eighth for a 7-4 lead. It was Peters’ first career homer. But the Cubs got a three-run blast of their own from Michael Conforto with one out to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Meanwhile, Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong had a heated exchange with a fan after crashing into the fence while attempting to make a catch.

Mets Pull Off Improbable Walk-off Win Over Yankees

Little brother weekend continued in the Big Apple from the most unlikely source: the New York Mets. The scuffling Mets erased a three-run deficit in the ninth inning, then walked off the New York Yankees in the 10th on rookie Carson Benge’s run-scoring fielder’s choice for a 7-6 victory in the Subway Series. Even more improbable was that the Mets were winless in their last 96 games when trailing entering the ninth inning. But Tyrone Taylor changed all that when he hit a three-run homer down the left-field line with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it 6-6. In the 10th, Marcus Semien was the automatic runner at second and was bunted to third by rookie A.J. Ewing. Luis Torrens was hit by a pitch, bringing up Benge. The Yankees brought left fielder Max Schuemann as an extra infielder and Benge hit it right to Schuemann, who was playing to the right side of second base, and he collided with a teammate, preventing a throw home. The comeback allowed the Mets to take two out of three in the series.

Phillies’ Climb Continues, Now Above .500

Was it that simple? Probably not. But the Philadelphia Phillies continue to show that a simple firing of a manager can be cathartic, even if Rob Thomson wasn’t totally at fault. Bryce Harper and Bryson Stott hit homers and right-handed starter Zack Wheeler pitched seven shutout innings as the Phillies blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates and Paul Skenes 6-0. Wheeler looked more like the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner than Skenes, striking out eight and allowing just four hits. Skenes, meanwhile, was tagged for five runs in five innings while still striking out seven. The Phillies are 14-4 under interim manager Don Mattingly and are now above .500 at 24-23.

By The Numbers

40 Nick Kurtz of the A’s extended his on-base streak to 40 games, the club’s second-longest in the last 75 years.

30 The Tampa Bay Rays became the first MLB team to reach 30 victories with a 6-3 triumph over the Miami Marlins.

2013 Kyle Manzardo hit two of the Cleveland Guardians‘ six home runs in a 10-3 rout of the Cincinnati Reds. The last time the Guardians hit six homers in a game was April 30, 2013, against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Best Moments From Yesterday

No Time To Get Mushy

Colt Emerson was in uniform and ready to take the field for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers when he was called into the manager’s office to hear the words he was waiting for. He was being called up to the majors by the Seattle Mariners and was expected to make his debut in a couple of hours.

Unwitting Star

A young Los Angeles Dodgers fan had a front-row seat at Angel Stadium and made sure to root on his team. It was caught by the TV microphones.
