Almost like a ghost reappearing, the Field of Dreams Game is back after a four-year absence. Today, the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies will play at the famed Dyersville, Iowa, site where the movie “Field of Dreams” was shot. Well, not quite the same site. A permanent stadium was built just up the road from the movie set and hosts today’s game. Both teams will wear throwback jerseys. One thing to be wary about: The game is on Netflix.
Today’s Headlines
Surging Padres Sweep Brewers
The San Diego Padres limped into the All-Star break by winning two against the Toronto Blue Jays to get them to 48-48. But something clicked after the break, with the Friars being one of the best teams in MLB since. If you didn’t believe it before, you should now. The Padres completed a three-game sweep of the MLB-leading Milwaukee Brewers with a 4-3 walk-off win in 11 innings. Jackson Merrill tied it with a sacrifice fly and Luis Campusano won it with a two-out single that scored Sung-Mun Song just ahead of the throw. Their fifth straight victory allowed the Padres to suddenly move into the No. 2 NL wild-card slot after losses by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies. In a matchup between new starters for each team, Dustin May of the Brewers and Robbie Ray of the Padres, May had the edge, holding San Diego to one run on four hits over seven innings. Ray lasted just four innings, allowing two runs. But the Padres tied it by taking advantage of a rare miscue by the Brewers. With Fernando Tatis Jr. on second and two out, Jake Cronenworth hit a grounder to between first and second base that first baseman Jake Bauers fielded. Left-hander Aaron Ashby was late covering first, allowing Cronenworth to reach, while Tatis scurried home from second without a play to make it 2-2. If it wasn’t for two excellent catches by the Brewers, one by center fielder Garrett Mitchell to end the ninth and the other by right fielder Luis Lara on Cronenworth’s sac fly in the 11th, this one would have been over sooner.
Bregman Comes Alive, Has 3 Homers, 7 RBIs
The Chicago Cubs have been waiting for their Alex Bregman moment. It came as the Cubs continue to make a push for something more than an NL wild-card berth. Bregman hit three homers and drove in seven, both career highs, as the Cubs pounded the Washington Nationals 12-6. Bregman has met the high standard he has set for himself in his first season in Chicago, but his power show — a three-run blast in the fifth, two-run shots in the sixth and eighth — pulled the Cubs within three games of the NL Central-leading Brewers. He also homered Tuesday, signaling a breakthrough for Bregman as the season’s intensity ramps up. He also walked twice before letting his bat do the work.
Rays Go 9-0 On West Coast Trip
Surviving a road trip, much less a nine-game trip to an opposite coast, is always the goal, but sometimes difficult to achieve. Tell that to the Tampa Bay Rays. Newcomer Liam Hicks came a triple away from the cycle, including his second homer since being acquired, to help the Rays complete a 9-0 road trip with an 8-4 victory over the A’s. This was the 13th road trip of 9-0 or better in MLB since 1900. The Rays swept the Colorado Rockies, Seattle Mariners, and A’s to boost their AL East lead to six games over the second-place New York Yankees and are now percentage points ahead of the Brewers for the best record in MLB. The Rays scored 30 runs in the three games vs. the A’s.
Vintage Castillo Notches 10 K’s For White Sox
Sometimes you just need a little change of scenery to break up your routine. It seems like Luis Castillo has found his old magic since joining the Chicago White Sox. The right-handed starter struck out 10 and allowed just one hit over seven innings as the White Sox cruised past the Cincinnati Reds 5-0. The White Sox now lead the second-place Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers by 3½ games. The only hit Castillo allowed was a one-out single in the first inning to Sal Stewart. Drew Romo hit a solo shot in the third inning and Chase Meidroth a two-run homer in the sixth.
Sweep Has Dodgers Feeling Good
While the Kansas City Royals continue to go in the wrong direction, the Los Angeles Dodgers are suddenly back on track. With Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Hunter Feduccia going deep, the Dodgers bounced the Royals 4-2 to sweep the three-game series. The sweep comes after the Dodgers dropped eight of nine entering the series. It wasn’t all smiles, though, for the Dodgers as first baseman Freddie Freeman fell into the Royals’ first-base dugout while catching a foul ball in the top of the eighth inning. He stayed in the game for the short term, but was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the eighth.
Chasing a pop foul, Freddie Freeman falls down the stairs and into the dugout in a terrifying moment. Somehow he stays in the game.

60 Austin Riley and newcomer Lane Thomas hit home runs as Atlanta beat the New York Mets 6-3. Atlanta is 60-25 when it hits at least two homers in a game this year.

I Thought We Were Friends
Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. may be rethinking his friendship with Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu, who owned the Toronto first baseman defensively in this series.
Sho-BLAN
We don’t get very many bloopers from Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani. So here is one.

Injuries and Other Moves
⚾ The surging Detroit Tigers placed outfielder Riley Greene on the 10-day injured list with a strained right hamstring.
⚾ Right-handed reliever Paul Sewald was claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Sewald had been designated for assignment.
⚾ Chicago Cubs right-handed reliever Phil Maton, who has battled a cranky knee all season with three trips to the injured list, has a partially torn patellar tendon.
⚾ Right-handed starter Miles Mikolas was designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals.
⚾ The Boston Red Sox sent prospect outfielder Harold Rivas to the Baltimore Orioles as the player to be named later to complete the Adley Rutschman trade. Rivas’ inclusion was contingent on Rutschman not having a setback in his return from a wrist issue. Otherwise, the Orioles would have received cash.
