Congratulations to the Texas Longhorns, first-time champions of the Women’s College World Series! The 2022 and 2024 runners-up put up five runs on Texas Tech star pitcher NiJaree Canady, who threw every pitch of the Red Raiders’ first WCWS run until she was pulled after one inning Friday night. Texas stretched the lead to 10-0 on a Mia Scott grand slam and cruised to a comfortable 10-4 win. Pitcher Teagan Kavan was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament after she went 4-0 with a save and a 0.00 ERA in the WCWS.

Tigers Claim Marquee Weekend Opener
The winningest team in Major League Baseball held off one of the top teams in the National League with pitching and defense. The Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1 in the first game of this weekend’s premier matchup. Tarik Skubal scattered eight hits over 7.2 IP and struck out six. The Tiger defensive highlights included a pair of catches at the wall. Riley Greene snagged a Pete Crow-Armstrong drive to left with a leaping grab in the second, and Kerry Carpenter hauled in Seiya Suzuki’s shot to right field in the eighth. Spencer Torkelson and Jahmai Jones, just called up from Triple-A, both hit solo homers for Detroit.
Cardinals Win Against Winners
A 5-0 shutout win over the Los Angeles Dodgers has the St. Louis Cardinals just 2.5 games behind the preseason NL favorites in the league standings. The Cards sit a half game back of the last wildcard spot, but their surprising success against the best teams has led to an NL-best 21-14 record against teams with winning records. That’s three more wins than the Dodgers’ total of 18 against teams with records above .500. Sonny Gray pitched a solid 6.1 innings, pushing his record to 7-1. Pedro Pagés hit a two-run homer, and Willson Contreras added a solo shot.
Mets First NL Team to 40 Wins
Francisco Lindor’s pinch-hit two-run double in the top of the ninth led the New York Mets to a 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies and a 40-24 record. Lindor didn’t play shortstop due to a broken pinky toe suffered on a HBP in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He played in Thursday’s loss, then rested for most of Friday’s game before coming in to hit the game-winner. The loss ends the Rockies’ longest winning streak of the season at three.
Buehler Bombed in Bronx
The last time the New York Yankees saw Walker Buehler was the last inning of the 2024 World Series. Buehler’s first action against New York in a Boston Red Sox uniform was another short outing, but this one went much differently. Buehler only pitched two innings, giving up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe both took Buehler deep in the first, and the Bronx Bombers earned a 9-6 victory. Chisholm and Aaron Judge both went 3-for-5, with the infielder tallying four RBIs and the outfielder maintaining his batting average at .397.

Close Calls Around the League
The Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-2, the only other game that matched the Cardinals’ five-run margin of victory on Friday. Chicago scored their entire winning margin in the bottom of the eighth. Only the Yankees won by three, and six teams won two-run games. The Athletics, Los Angeles Angels, Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Rays, and San Francisco Giants all secured one-run wins. The Pirates won 5-4 against the Philadelphia Phillies on a Nick Gonzales sacrifice fly, and the Giants walked off Atlanta 5-4 on a wild pitch.
McCullough’s First Ejection
Xavier Edwards dropped a bunt to the third base side of the mound and sped down the line. When he got to the bag, the throw bounced into his path and skittered away, along with first baseman Jonathan Aranda’s glove. It looked like the bunt forced the defense into a mistake, but first base umpire Chad Fairchild called Edwards out for interference. After some mild arguing, play resumed, and then Edwards and Miami Marlins manager Clayton McCullough got tossed for arguing the judgment call. On behalf of speedy bunters, I extend my thanks to the first-year manager for sticking up for his player on this one. McCullough’s exit didn’t ignite a comeback, though, as the Marlins lost 4-3.
Ritter Rips a Three-Bagger
Ryan Ritter’s first Major League hit was a triple to center at Coors Field against the Mets. It’s always good to see the family shot in the stands after these moments. Ritter got the call-up before the game when the Rockies placed shortstop Ezequiel Tovar on the 10-day IL with a strained left oblique.

Imagine walking up to the gate with a life-size stuffed emu in a Milwaukee Brewers shirt. How would the stadium staff react? Are giant stuffed animals a consideration in stadium policies? Do you have to buy a ticket for it? So many questions.

Injuries and Other Moves
⚾ The Dodgers recalled right-hander Justin Wrobleski from Triple-A and optioned right-hander Landon Knack to Oklahoma City.
⚾ The Cincinnati Reds activated infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand from the 10-day IL and designated catcher Austin Wynns for assignment.
⚾ Atlanta shuffled their bullpen by adding right-hander Craig Kimbrel to the roster, recalling left-hander Dylan Dodd, placing right-hander Daysbel Hernández on the 15-day IL with right forearm inflammation, and trading right-hander Scott Blewett to the Baltimore Orioles.
⚾ Corbin Burnes’s first season with the Arizona Diamondbacks is already over. The free agent ace will have Tommy John surgery next week, according to manager Torey Lovullo.
⚾ The A’s placed catcher Shea Langeliers on the 10-day IL with a strained left oblique. They selected recalled catcher Jhonny Pereda and selected outfielder Seth Brown from Triple-A, and designated outfielder Drew Avans for assignment.
