Today’s Headlines

Lovullo Makes the Call for Skenes

What a year for Paul Skenes. On July 9, 2023, the Pittsburgh Pirates made him the top pick in the draft just weeks after he and the LSU Tigers won the College World Series. He made his MLB debut this May, and since then, in 11 starts, he’s allowed 14 runs in 66.1 innings pitched. For every 27 outs he’s recorded against Major League hitters, a dozen have been strikeouts. And next Tuesday, he’ll face the American League’s 1-2-3 hitters — possibly Gunnar HendersonJuan Soto, and Aaron Judge — in the 2024 All-Star Game. National League manager Torey Lovullo interrupted Skenes’s conversation with Dan Patrick to tell him about the starting nod live on the air. What a moment for Skenes.

Yanks-O’s Series Opener Boils Over in 9th

Aaron Judge hit his league-leading 33rd home run and the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 4-1. Gerrit Cole threw 106 pitches, struck out seven, and allowed one run in six innings.

The Yankees pulled even with the Orioles at 57 wins. They’re still two behind in the loss column (39 vs. 37) and get two more against the O’s this weekend. That should be interesting after tonight’s ninth inning. Clay Holmes plunked Heston Kjerstad in the ear, Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde took exception to something he heard, the benches cleared, and the bullpens ran in. A brawl? No. A benches-clearing incident. “Heavy jostling” was the best description I read. They held a heated discussion near home plate, then dispersed. They’ll play two more, the best Yankees and Orioles will become teammates for the week, and then New York and Baltimore can jostle for the American League East for the rest of the summer.

Heating Up in Arizona

The National League champs are above .500 for the first time since April 5. Geraldo Perdomo put the ball in the air with one out in the bottom of the ninth and Corbin Carroll on third base, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4. Last season, the D-backs went 8-16 in July after a hot first three months. They’re already up to seven wins this month after a mediocre start.

Two-Homer Winners

Marcell Ozuna powered Atlanta to a win over the San Diego Padres with two homers. Harrison Bader and Jose Iglesias each went deep twice in the New York Metswin over the Colorado RockiesWillie Calhoun walked off the Seattle Mariners with his second dinger of the night.

One-Hop Winner

This 107.3 mph, 403-foot blast from Shohei Ohtani would have left just 10/30 MLB parks, but he’ll absolutely take a bounce that helped it clear the wall and put the Los Angeles Dodgers up 4-3 over the Detroit Tigers in the top of the ninth. The Dodgers held on to end a four-game losing streak.

Best Moments From Yesterday

Make the Spotlight for HBCUs Brighter

The Americans beat the Nationals 5-4 in the second annual Swingman Classic. This game is designed to give 50 players from historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) the spotlight as part of All-Star Week. I wholeheartedly agree with this goal, and my first recommendation for the 2025 Swingman Classic is this: Tell more people about the baseball that was played! Since I couldn’t watch the game live, I looked for details. The score is all the game info I could scrounge up last night. This video of Grambling State outfielder Tiger Borom’s two-run double is one of a few highlights on X. If the purpose is to give these players a spotlight, then publish a box score and write up the game itself (MLB.com’s story includes the score, and that’s it for stats). Let us know who these players are and what they did in the showcase.

Their Grimace Era

I love how weird baseball can be.

Vol-ocity

Pinch hitter Josh Rojas got sent to the plate against Ben Joyce and got a piece of the fastest pitch of the season. Joyce topped 105 mph in his Tennessee days, and he’s got a few months to beat his new MLB high score.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ Xander Bogaerts returned to the San Diego Padres lineup and went 2-for-4 against Atlanta. He had been out since May 20 with a broken left shoulder.

⚾ The Philadelphia Phillies released utility player Whit Merrifield and called up infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson from Triple-A. Wilson played with the Phillies during the London Series this season.

⚾ The Pittsburgh Pirates reinstated lefthander starter Marco Gonzales from the IL, and Gonzales got his first win with the team. Closer David Bednar also came back from the IL and earned a save.

⚾ The New York Yankees called up infielder Jorbit Vivas from Triple-A and placed J.D. Davis on the 10-day IL (stomach flu).

⚾ The Minnesota Twins placed Kyle Farmer on the 10-day IL and recalled Jair Camargo from Triple-A.

⚾ Bryan Woo made his first start for the Seattle Mariners since June 24. The right-hander threw 66 pitches over 3.1 innings, 44 for strikes. He struck out one, walked two, gave up nine hits, and allowed four runs.
