Today’s Headlines

Hernandez Sparks Two Comebacks in LA

Kiké Hernández brought the Los Angeles Dodgers back from down one in the ninth with a homer off former teammate Kenley Jansen. He made up a one-run deficit again in the 10th with a single. Because he got tagged out at second, he started the 11th in scoring position for Will Smith, who brought him around to win it 7-6. The Dodgers are missing their superstar-right-fielder-turned-shortstop, have a couple of rotations worth of pitchers on the IL, and still lead the NL West by seven games. The Boston Red Sox are jostling for a Wild Card slot.

O’s First in AL to 60 Wins

The Baltimore Orioles claimed a series win on the road over the defending champions with an 8-4 win in Texas. Grayson Rodriguez struck out eight in six innings and climbed to the top of the AL win leaderboard with 12.

Ryan O’Hearn, Jordan Westburg, and Cedric Mullins all hit home runs. This trio went 6-for-11 with six runs, four RBIs, and three walks. Baltimore edges out New York and Cleveland to reach 60 wins first. Those three teams have a five-game cushion over the next tier of playoff hopefuls in the AL.

A for Effort

Randy Arozarena didn’t look great on the play that resulted in Juan Soto’s Little League home run on Friday. He made up for it today. Tampa Bay topped the New York Yankees 9-1. Arozarena went 4-for-5 with two home runs. The Rays are 49-49 and 11 games back in the East, but only 4.5 games out of the Wild Card spots.

D-Backs, Padres, Mets Pitch Shutouts

Zac Gallen worked around three hits and six walks, and the Arizona Diamondbacks stifled the Chicago Cubs 3-0. The San Diego Padres blanked the Cleveland Guardians 7-0 behind 10 strikeouts, one hit, and one walk in 7.0 IP from Dylan Cease. The New York Mets got six innings from Luis Severino and a 12-pitch ninth from Edwin Díaz in a 1-0 win over the Miami Marlins.

Jake the Rake

The Detroit Tigers put up a six-run sixth inning behind a grand slam from catcher Jake Rogers and beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-3. The Tigers are hanging out with Tampa Bay, lurking around .500 just outside the Wild Card spots.

Singer Pitching Machine

Brady Singer struck out seven in 7.0 IP and allowed zero runs on five hits and two walks. Bobby Witt Jr. went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. The Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 6-1 to stay in a Wild Card spot.

Best Moments From Yesterday

The Opposite of the Announcer’s Curse

This is about as close as you can get to weaponized commentary: slyly mentioning that Cristopher Sánchez doesn’t give up many homers to induce a homer for Andrew McCutchen.

The Pittsburgh Pirates take the series from the Philadelphia Phillies after, well, pulling off a similar commentary manifestation on Friday, too.

Also for Albies

Maybe there’s something to that trick? Right before Ozzie Albies lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to lift Atlanta to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, Joe Simpson in the home broadcast booth said he’d like to see Albies doused with a Gatorade cooler. I’m sure he would settle for splashes from the water bottles.

I am Outman

Hernández was the hero of the game, but James Outman was the hero the Dodgers needed in the seventh.

Cabbage Catch and Leaping Lope

The Seattle Mariners just had to tip their caps to this level of game-changing defense from the Houston Astros outfield. Two great eighth-inning catches in a tw0-run game.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ The Toronto Blue Jays placed shortstop Bo Bichette on the 10-day IL (right calf). However, Bichette may be out much longer than that. Infielder Addison Barger has been called up from Triple-A.

⚾ The Philadelphia Phillies reinstated catcher J.T. Realmuto from the 10-day IL. They called up right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte from Triple-A and optioned catcher Rafael Marchán and right-handed pitcher Michael Mercado to Triple-A.

⚾ The Minnesota Twins placed shortstop Carlos Correa (right plantar fasciitis) and Chris Paddack (right forearm strain) on the IL. They activated outfielder Austin Martin off the IL and promoted second baseman Edouard Julien from Triple-A.

⚾ Nick Anderson signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers after being released by the Kansas City Royals this week.

⚾ Clayton Kershaw will make his season debut with the Dodgers on Thursday.
