MLB Rumor Roundup: 6/27

Diving into recent talk, transactions, and trends around the league!

Welcome back to another week of Rumor Roundup, where we dive into all the recent talk, transactions, and trends from around the league, balancing both fantasy baseball implications and real-world baseball analysis through the lens of a front office.

Featured Story

Earlier this week, the Chicago Cubs set out to bolster their injury-plagued rotation by acquiring left-handed pitcher David Peterson from the New York Mets in exchange for prospect 1B Cole Mathis.

Peterson, 30, has had a rough start to his 2026 campaign, posting a 6.09 ERA and 10.3% K-BB rate through 68 innings. The good news? Peterson’s FIP (3.86) and xFIP (4.05) each sit over two full runs below his actual ERA, indicating there could be some positive regression headed his way. The southpaw has been BABIP’d quite a bit this season (.350, ~30 points over his career average), and given the fact this is an arm that relies a lot on generating ground balls (51%), the defense behind him is going to play a big role into that mix.

Mathis, 22, is a right-handed slugger that has slashed .272/.396/.585 with a 145 wRC+ over 39 games this season, already launching a career-high 10 home runs and swiping 7 stolen bases before the All-Star break between Low-A and High-A this season. He limits swing-and-miss well (7% clip sits in the 92nd percentile among qualified High-A hitters), plus loves to pull the ball in the air. This is a solid return for an arm that is a much better fit under Cubs Player Development — a team that absolutely loves dealing with low velo, cut-fastball variants.
