Fantasy Baseball SP Roundup 8/17: A Crismatt Miracle

Nick Pollack reviews every starting pitcher performance from Sunday.

Welcome to the SP Roundup, my daily fantasy baseball article reviewing every starting pitcher’s performance from every Sunday game. I apologize for the jokes written in my delirium in advance. Have questions? Ask me during my office hours on Playback.tv weekday mornings from 10 am-12 pm ET.

Nabil Crismatt (ARI) @ COL (ND) – 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 39% CSW, 62 pitches.

What a wonderful day for Nabil CrismattHe’s bounced around between teams for the last four seasons and was suddenly called up to make his first appearance in the majors this season and the task was to survive five innings on low pitch count in Coors. And that’s exactly what he did: 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 39% CSW, 62 pitches. He even earned a King Cole on the way, what a glorious day.

I wanted to lead with Crismatt to silence any questions about his fantasy relevance quickly. He has a whole lot of fun with his changeup that returned a stupid high 10/26 whiffs and a 50% CSW on the day, but there is a whole lot of nothing supporting the pitch. They flirt with 90 mph but get rejected more times than not, and his breakers are nothing to overwhelm mailboxes with. I don’t want to ignore the changeup’s success as a right-hander facing RHB (I love that!), it’s simply so rare for a RHP to survive long in the majors with just a changeup.

Maybe he’s the next Marco EstradaThat would be awesome. It would first require him to be stretched out, then nail down his command, and feature a better four-seamer to disguise the slowball a bit better. You already know how unlikely this is, but yes, I’ll be here to tell you if there’s sustainability blossoming in his future starts, if he even gets many the rest of the way. But he gets the Reds Carpet next! Oh wow. STILL, just 62 pitches here, making the ceiling too low for my interest. Sorry, Y’all.

Let’s see how every other SP did Sunday:

Andrew Abbott (CIN) vs MIL (ND) – 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 Hits, 0 BBs, 7 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 92 pitches.

I was so down on him and I deserve all the egg on my face now that he has a 2.28 ERA with a 1.08 WHIP across 130 innings. But he pitches in GABP! And his fastball isn’t good! And his changeup + curve are good but not elite! Yeah, I sure sound dumb, don’t I?

Dean Kremer (BAL) @ HOU (W) – 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 7 Ks – 21 Whiffs, 30% CSW, 114 pitches.

The Dean Werewolf had the ideal BSB working against LHB with his four-seamer up and splitter down + the cutter was OHHHH BANANAS down-and-away to RHB, propelling a Gallows Pole on the night. Wow, the Orioles’ rotation of Young, Povich, and Kremer obliterated the Astros this weekend. Wonder if that says more about Houston or the Orioles. Anyway, Kremer will get Houston a second time and I guess we give it a spin. After all, he was clearly feeling it here.

Logan Webb (SFG) vs TBR (W) – 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 0 BBs, 7 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 38% CSW, 86 pitches.

Even though the cutter was axed and the sweeper wasn’t a huge factor, Webb looked legit. Why? Because his bread and butter of sinker/change was peak. And that’s great to know he can still do that. The only question is how sustainable that is.

Davis Martin (CHW) @ KCR (ND) – 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 87 pitches.

Wow, Martin’s ability to sit away from RHB with sinkers and cutters was so fun. He got away with a few fastballs to LHB that set up the changeup underneath and Koufax did the rest. Are we at the point that we’re buying into his cutter command indefinitely? Maybe?

Antonio Senzatela (COL) vs ARI (ND) – 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 Hits, 1 BBs, 2 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 61 pitches.

You know, Senz-A going 0 ER in five is the greatest Birthday Party we’ll see all year. But he didn’t even get a Win! DON’T RUIN THIS FOR HIM. Look at Antonio in his hat, don’t take this moment away from him!

Carmen Mlodzinski (PIT) @ CHC (ND) – 4.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 Hits, 0 BBs, 3 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 44 pitches.

This was a bullpen game and ho boy did the Pirates luck out with four shutout frames on such a low pitchcount from Mldozinski. But he throws 96/97 mph with a legit kick change! You know, that is pretty cool. I just wish his four-seamer wasn’t super hittable and he could locate the sinker with its 16/17″ of ride inside to RHB. That 84/85 mph curveball is actually kind cool when he lands it too…Nah, I can’t. The command and hittable fastballs are still an issue. He’s a Young Gun.

Garrett Crochet (BOS) vs MIA (ND) – 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 8 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 30% CSW, 94 pitches.

Aces gonna ace. Despite the low sub 50% strike rate on the sweeper, it did its job with four strikeouts and a pair of outs. He’s so dope. Come on Sawx, get this dude more Wins.

Jose Quintana (MIL) @ CIN (ND) – 6.1 IP, 1 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 98 pitches.

When Quintana is cookin’, we’re booking time at the Hotel José. It’s the Giants next, y’all. Yes, I’ll be present for breakfast in the morning, thank you.

Ryan Bergert (KCR) vs CHW (ND) – 5.1 IP, 1 ER, 6 Hits, 2 BBs, 7 Ks – 15 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 95 pitches.

He was Singled Out a touch, but that slider + sweeper combo is killing it. Yes, he needs to work on the changeup some more (You’re using it! Good! Keep practicing), yes his four-seamer command is spotty over the plate (14 foul balls on the pitch is a bit fortunate as that could have been even more balls in play for hits), but the foundation of BSB with 18″ of vert and an average attack angle + a whiffable pair of breakers is solid. @DET + @CHW, + CLE is up next and I think I’m down for all, even against the LHB Guardians.

Thomas Hatch (MIN) vs DET (W) – 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 22% CSW, 81 pitches.

Wait, this was supposed to be a bullpen game. The sinker/slider worked to RHB and the cutter + change were tossed to LHB as he wriggled his way through five frames. No, you shouldn’t Hatch a plan to add Tommy low-on-the-radar-Gun to your squads.

Clay Holmes (NYM) vs SEA (W) – 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 88 pitches.

Ayyyy, he was able to locate his secondaries this time around! Look at the fella, patching up The Adobe. He still has a solid schedule ahead of him, though I’d still feel iffy on starting him against Atlanta.

Will Warren (NYY) @ STL (ND) – 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BBs, 3 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 95 pitches.

Oh, so you’re just going to move on from the changeup then? But why? Four of those six hits came to LHB despite facing fewer than their counterparts. Ugh. Another case of “Hey, you’re really good and you have the pieces but we’re still in the development phase.” I’d say you still hold for the Sawx in the Bronx + CrySox after, and probably through the end, then I take to the off-season talking about how I think he’ll take a step forward en route to paying too much of a premium next year. Dope.

Logan Allen (CLE) vs ATL (ND) – 4.2 IP, 1 ER, 5 Hits, 3 BBs, 6 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 107 pitches.

He couldn’t get anything down and it was a struggle for the southpaw. Remember, Acuña is back in the Atlanta lineup, making them far better than they’ve been in the second-half.

Javier Assad (CHC) vs PIT (ND) – 4.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 3 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 65 pitches.

He got the wind blowing in at Wrigley and it helped him out as I watch this and go “This ain’t it.”

Cristian Javier (HOU) vs BAL (L) – 3.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 0 BBs, 2 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 50 pitches.

He left this one early due to illness. Bummer. The curve and changeup were looking fantastic to LHB before then, though there were some wild four-seamers and an array of noooope to RHB as well. And 91 mph! He was sick, like actually plagued. Don’t judge this and keep holding.

Nathan Eovaldi (TEX) @ TOR (W) – 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 Hits, 0 BBs, 6 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 97 pitches.

Aces gonna ace. There we go Eovaldi, just like you’ve always done it. And hey! There’s a sinker showing up to RHB now! One of the four he threw allowed a hit. And an out! And a whiff! POSITIVITY.

Tyler Glasnow (LAD) vs SDP (ND) – 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BBs, 8 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 91 pitches.

Aces gonna Dusty Donut. Speaking of sinkers, that’s still part of the gameplan for Glasnow, even if they are questionably better than the heater. We hadn’t seen the slider excel since returning from the IL, but it was legit in this one with incessant breakers landing down-and-gloveside for 9/34 whiffs and 38% CSW. The curve wasn’t there, though, and the four-seamer got pounced for a solo shot in the fifth because we can’t have nice things. Oh, and the pen ruined the Win. COME ON.

Janson Junk (MIA) @ BOS (ND) – 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BBs, 6 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 87 pitches.

This was nearly a 1 ER game, but the Abreu two-run shot fell out of the mitt as it was being robbed. So close. This was another day as a JunkBaller and the four-seamer command was pretty dang good at 41% CSW and 76% strikes – even the HR was a lovely inside heater. It’s too bad he gets the Jays and Mets up next or I’d consider running with it. He was clearly feeling it here.

Miles Mikolas (STL) vs NYY (ND) – 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 Hits, 5 BBs, 1 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 18% CSW, 87 pitches.

The fact that Mikolas returned a HAISTBMBWT?! with five walks against the Yankees and still allowed just 3 ER in five frames is kinda hilarious.

Ryan Pepiot (TBR) @ SFG (L) – 5.2 IP, 4 ER, 6 Hits, 2 BBs, 8 Ks – 17 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 93 pitches.

This was frustrating. The four-seamer held a stupid high 27% NC Rate and yet, he still had a strong outing going across 5.2 shutout innings…until the next five batters reached base – four hits including a bloop, a broken bat bases-clearing double, and a dribbler just through the hole. KOUFAX, WHY?! Careful, IcarusTHAT DOESN’T HELP. I’m still holding, y’all. I get that you want to move on, but he was one inch away from six shutout + the Cards + Nats + Guardians + CrySox are next.

Yu Darvish (SDP) @ LAD (ND) – 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BBs, 5 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 82 pitches.

He got bamboozled in the first with some terrible two-strike pitches, with a pair of HRs for all four of his runs coming at 0-2. That can’t happen. Then he was great for the next three innings and pulled. At least he’s at 82 pitches and after another date with the Dodgers up next (you can’t, right?), it’s @TEA + BAL + CIN. I want him for those, so it’s up to you.

Erick Fedde (ATL) @ CLE (ND) – 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 6 Hits, 3 BBs, 5 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 92 pitches.

Don’t Trust The Feddes.

José Soriano (LAA) @ ATH (ND) – 5.2 IP, 5 ER, 8 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 102 pitches.

The sinker found strikes alright, but the Athletics were ready for them in Sacré Verde, allowing five hits and one of his three solo shots on the night. The curve had its moments with 6/35 whiffs but got walloped for the other two longballs and that’s your ballgame. He’s a HIPSTER, remember.

Jeffrey Springs (ATH) vs LAA (ND) – 4.2 IP, 5 ER, 8 Hits, 3 BBs, 5 Ks – 18 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 100 pitches.

My thought was that the Angels would play into the hand of Springs’ changeup and at least that was right with 10/36 whiffs. Everything else…not so much. No sunshine and rainbows here after a bamboozling of three runs in the first.

Mitchell Parker (WSN) vs PHI (ND) – 1.2 IP, 5 ER, 4 Hits, 3 BBs, 0 Ks – 2 Whiffs, 15% CSW, 52 pitches.

Jeeeeeez. I can’t wait for him to get DFA’d, then fixed somewhere else where they can take advantage of his high extension and decent breakers.

José Berríos (TOR) vs TEX (L) – 4.1 IP, 6 ER, 10 Hits, 0 BBs, 2 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 87 pitches.

Let’s see, we’re now at a 4.00 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Wait, he’s going to lower those marks before the end of the year, right? He’s The Great Undulator after all. Yeah, but, like, he WILL, right? Probably? I dunno, he’s Berríos and I wouldn’t test it anyway.

Aaron Nola (PHI) @ WSN (ND) – 2.1 IP, 6 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 53 pitches.

Things were great until the third when Nola got Singled Out and bounced out of the game. It was a Still ILL and he would have thrown more pitches if not for such a laborious final frame. He’ll get his revenge against the Nats next time out and I’d start him.

George Kirby (SEA) @ NYM (L) – 4.2 IP, 7 ER, 12 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 8 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 97 pitches.

What do you get when you allow a three-run shot in the second and get Singled Out in the fifth? This line? No. Tears flowing down the cheeks of fantasy managers who needed to secure their win on a Sunday night. The thing is, I don’t think he pitched that badly, save for throwing too many dang sinkers. The four-seamer is commanded better, even if the sinker has decent ride at 16/17″. Use them both in tandem to RHB, not just sinkers for a surprise heater later. IT’S RIGHT THERE.

Chris Paddack (DET) @ MIN (L) – 5.2 IP, 8 ER, 9 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 23% CSW, 91 pitches.

What is it with Paddack and these horrific blowup outings? Six runs came off the longball, including a grand-slam in the third, and this was a mix of losing batters with little confidence on his attack to RHB, while the LHB approach is still incredibly solid. Sigh. You know, if Paddack struggles for a bit, I wonder if they switch to SGL or Melton…JUST A THOUGHT. In all likelihood, it’s a blip and he remains a Toby, but honestly, just treat him like a streamer and that’s fine.

Game of the Day

Spencer Arrighetti vs. Jack Flaherty – It feels like a make-or-break start for both arms.

But Nick?! Where are the streaming picks? – I’ve moved them to the daily SP Matchups & Streamer Rankings article.
