Welcome to the Waiver Wire Picks, our daily fantasy baseball article that looks at the best players in baseball that you should be adding to your rosters. We’ll look at the players that are likely to be available in most leagues, as well as some deep league waiver wire options, and we’ll also look at the most added players in fantasy baseball across the major sites, and let you know which players to add, and which players you can leave on the wire.
Top Priority Players to Add
Edward Cabrera (MIA) SP (35% rostered on Yahoo!)
Joe Rowan mentioned E-Cab in Monday’s column, pointing out that the enigmatic right-hander had not surrendered three earned runs in any of his previous nine starts. Well, he deserves another bump after outdueling Joe Ryan last night. The key takeaways? Seven innings, six strikeouts, no runs, two hits, and, wait for it, just one walk! The Marlins have also loosened their leash, letting him toss 90 pitches in his last two turns. I could yap some more about his stats since May; they are quite good. However, just take a look at his final sequence last night and tell me with a straight face that you’re not a little interested.
Pitching porn…What a sequence by Edward Cabrera to finish off his 7th scoreless inning 😍

– 89 mph slider for a chase

Grant Taylor (CWS) SP, RP (9% rostered on Yahoo!)
I mentioned Taylor last week as a speculative add after he had bagged his first save. Well, guess what? He picked up another this past Saturday, so he’s looking an awful lot like the closer. Sure, the White Sox might only earn a scant few save opportunities, but Taylor is just an insane talent. Check out Nick’s reaction to seeing him this past Spring.
Ben Rice (NYY), 1B (33% rostered on Yahoo!)
Yes, I know Rice rode the pine yesterday against a right-hander no less. Still, the Yankees have squandered any breathing room in the AL East, and at a certain point, Aaron Boone, the talking head who formerly imitated batting stances as a color commentator on ESPN, or the forces that be, whether its general manager Brian Cashman, his select chieftains, or whatever program/entity has been bequeathed with the responsibility of tabulating the starting lineup in Yankee land, will be forced to acknowledge Rice and his 124 wRC+, third-best on the roster behind Trent Grisham, who is currently sidelined by a hamstring issue. Either way, we’re seeing that play out with Rice having started three games behind the dish; that eligibility alone could make him worth his weight.
Yahoo! and ESPN Most Added Players

Colton Gordon doesn’t bring much strikeout upside, but he has proven himself to be quite the strike-thrower, with his walk rate sitting at 2.9% through eight starts. Those who rolled the dice on the young lefty at Coors last night were rewarded with three punchouts and 11 baserunners across four and two-thirds. Gordon could be a decent source of wins, but we’ll keep our expectations curbed for his next start against the Dodgers in L.A. this weekend.
Ramón Laureano received top billing in yesterday’s column. Like Trent Grisham, the 30-year-old castaway has come out of nowhere, netting a career-high 150 wRC+ across 193 PAs as a regular with the O’s. You have to be skeptical, considering his career trajectory, but still, in five OF leagues, you take the production and see where it goes.
Otto Lopez showcased some wheels last year, swiping 20 bags across 117 games with the Fish. And as Mitch Steinberg mentioned in yesterday’s column, he is showing more pop, with his eight home runs being two more than he hit all of last season.
Adley Rutschman’s oblique injury has afforded Gary Sánchez a chance to be a starting catcher for a couple of weeks, and a potential stop-gap for managers in two-catcher leagues. He entered the year having banged 30 home runs over his previous two seasons combined (547 PAs), so you know the power is still there, and sure enough, he tagged deGrom last night.
Andre Pallante did a good job Tuesday, holding the Buccos across seven. But alas, the Cards couldn’t score. Pallante can be a useful stream at times, but his ranking 93rd on the List is all you need to know. Feel free to move on with him getting a date with the Cubs at Wrigley this weekend.

Max Muncy had one of the best months of his career this past June, hitting .333 with seven big flies and a 206 wRC+.
Shane Baz had his best outing of the year last Thursday, holding the Royals scoreless on three hits and one walk over eight innings. Max Muncy spoiled his outing against the A’s last night. However, he totaled a whopping 20 whiffs (90 pitches; 48 swings). Sure, his 4.33 ERA and 1.25 WHIP aren’t pretty. However, Baz has now totaled 20 Ks over his last two turns, with improved cutter usage providing some of the fuel.
Sure, he’s at the twilight of his career, but it’s still a little strange seeing Clayton Kershaw on the wire, no? Regardless, the 37-year-old proved he can still be useful for fantasy purposes, with a solid, six-inning effort at Coors last Thursday. More importantly, he picked up his 3,000th strikeout. He will face the White Sox today.
Agustín Ramírez is hitting .252 with 12 dingers and a 114 wRC+. That would be fantastic work from any catcher, let alone a rookie.
Category Specific Players to Add
Jorge Soler (LAA) OF (18% rostered on Yahoo!)
Soler returned from the IL last night, just in time to burn his former club with a two-run double. He’s had a rough start to his stint with the Angels, but he could be a difference-maker in the second half if you’re chasing home runs. And, hey, he’s just one away from career home run number 200.
Jake McCarthy (ARI), OF (10% rostered on Yahoo!)
McCarthy is a career .263 hitter with a 98 wRC+ across 1,300 PAs, so you’ll probably need the rest of your lineup to pick up the slack in the HR and RBI categories. And, as if on cue, he went yard last night. Regardless, you’re rostering McCarthy for his speed, with the 26-year-old lefty having stolen 79 bags on 94 attempts across 384 games.
Streaming Pitchers
Be sure to check Nick’s daily SP streaming article.
Dustin May (LAD), SP (37% rostered on Yahoo!)
May most recently struggled through four innings in a no-decision against the Royals, a lineup that has scored the fewest runs in baseball. May started the season as a former prospect and breakout candidate, but through 14 starts, we’re looking at a 4.46 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and an 11.1% K-BB. I think at this point, we have to accept him as just a decent streamer with a great supporting cast. And on the note, he’ll be a massive favorite this Thursday, with the Dodgers concluding their three-game series against the White Sox.
Speculative Adds
Noelvi Marte (CIN) 3B (22% rostered on Yahoo!)
Marte impressed during his 19 games earlier this season, hitting nine home runs with four steals and a 132 wRC+. He played both legs of a doubleheader while on a rehab assignment with Double-A Chattanooga this past Sunday and could be back relatively soon if all goes well. He carries multi-categorical upside, making him an easy stash for those in IL leagues.
Emmet Sheehan (LAD) SP (19% rostered on Yahoo!)
Sheehan looked great in his spot start against the Padres on June 18th, striking out six while allowing three baserunners across three innings. And then, the Dodgers spoiled the fun by returning him to Triple-A for another two weeks. He most recently fanned a career-high 13 batters against Sacramento, which earned him PCL Pitcher of the Week. Dave Roberts floated Sheehan as an option to pitch against the Astros this Sunday. Again, nothing is confirmed, but he is worth stashing to see what happens.
Deep League Players to Watch
Dominic Canzone (SEA), OF (2% rostered on Yahoo!)
The 27-year-old lefty is likely stuck in a strong-side platoon, but he has been productive, going yard five times with a 144 wRC+ across 65 PAs. We’re talking 53 batted balls, so take it with a grain of salt, but his Statcast page is impressive, including a 115.9 max EV, good for the top third percentile.
