Welcome to the SP Roundup, my daily fantasy baseball article reviewing every starting pitcher’s performance from every Sunday game. I apologize for the jokes written in my delirium in advance. Have questions? Ask me during my office hours on Twitch.tv weekday mornings from 10 am-12 pm ET.
Andrew Abbott (CIN) vs HOU (W) – 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 85 pitches.
What a journey it’s been for Andrew Abbott this season. He produced out of the gate without much celebration, before five straight starts of turmoil left him wondering if he’d ever get another invitation to a Birthday Party. But then Rockie Road came to his doorstep. He gave us a decent line against the Red Sox. And now, Abbott finished the day with his best line of the season against the Astros: 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 85 pitches (W). I really want to believe he’s at it again and I can’t.
The best version of Abbott is a straightforward SWATCH. Heaters in the upper third with more vert than his 2024 self, changeups sitting away from RHB, and curves + sweepers acting as proper breaking balls to their respective batters. What I saw here was not that. Four-seamers were incredibly hittable and only punished once for a single in the sixth. His changeup kept missing in the dirt or away off the plate, ending the day with 1/15 whiffs and just 40% strikes. Abbott earned a fair number of whiffs down-and-away to LHB with both the sweeper and curveball, but a 55% strike rate on the sweeper as his #2 pitch is a bit lackluster, not to mention all five strikeouts coming against LHB. Yep, 0/14 strikeouts to RHB. That’s not a good sign.
Abbott will get another batch of RHB when he heads to Cleveland next Saturday and I’m not sold he’ll be able to pull it off. I wish I could get behind it, but without the changeup feel, fastball command, or an overwhelming breaker, it seems more like a trap play than the start where we all jump back on the wagon. Let’s see how every other SP did Sunday:
Cristopher Sánchez (PHI) vs COL (W) – 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 6 Hits, 0 BBs, 7 Ks – 15 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 103 pitches.
Aces gonna ace. Thanks for doing exactly what you should do, Sánchez. I’ll forgive you for not featuring the same low changeup or improved velocity like you had last time. But seriously, can you get a little bit closer to 96+ mph than 94.7 next time out? K thx. (View Game Card)
Jacob deGrom (TEX) vs CHC (W) – 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 0 BBs, 10 Ks – 22 Whiffs, 39% CSW, 94 pitches.
Aces gonna ace for a King Cole. deGrom has a 2.62 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with a 33% strikeout rate, but this outing was the best I’ve seen him since possibly before TJS. The most perfect four-seamer/slider separation he’s had for a long time. What a dude. (View Game Card)
Logan Gilbert (SEA) @ CHW (ND) – 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 Hits, 0 BBs, 9 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 36% CSW, 87 pitches.
You’re welcome, y’all. Clearly, all I needed to do was suggest that Gilbert wasn’t worthy of AGA for him to wake up. Or he needed to face the White Sox. Fair. How about we wait one more start against the Padres before giving him the title back? (View Game Card)
Bryce Elder (ATL) @ LAD (W) – 5.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 Hits, 4 BBs, 8 Ks – 15 Whiffs, 34% CSW, 83 pitches.
Y’all read me turn a new leaf with Elder last week and I gotta say, he commanded incredibly well, despite the four walks. What’s kinda hilarious is how I waxed poetic about his new cutter and its impact to LHB. It was the reason for my faith in the fella. Welp, he threw six for 50% strikes. Nay, this was high heater, low slider to LHB that played the ole Snell/Tanaka tightrope game of low zone rates (46%?!) in exchange for limiting damage and egging batters to swing at pitches they don’t want to hit. Now with this one out of the way (while cackling as Koufax came for Wrobo Cop and not Elder with his 5.8 hit/9), Elder should be an easy play hosting the Sawx and heading to Miami. What a world. (View Game Card)
David Peterson (NY-N) @ ARI (L) – 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 Hits, 0 BBs, 3 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 30% CSW, 77 pitches.
For what it’s worth, Peterson is close to a 1.50 ERA across four of his last five games, with a sub 1.00 WHIP…and a 7 ER disaster in the middle. Oh, and this was the only outing of five frames. And just one Win on the season. Well, what is it worth? I…don’t know. (View Game Card)
Kyle Leahy (STL) @ SDP (ND) – 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 Hits, 4 BBs, 5 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 95 pitches.
He’s yet to go further than one out into the sixth thus far, while strikeouts are still hard to come by at an 18% strikeout rate. I’m not super jazzed by this one (sub 60% strikes on both the four-seamer and curve is a hard sell) and I’m still not in yet. Get me AMPED, Kyle. (View Game Card)
Eduardo Rodriguez (ARI) vs NYM (W) – 8.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 22% CSW, 100 pitches.
So close to going the distance. A jam-shot flare to no-man’s land behind first base was his final pitch of the game and it really was a fantastic effort from Erod across almost nine full innings. His changeup, four-seamer and cutter were firing on all cylinders and working in tandem like a true vet. Too bad he gets Coors next. (View Game Card)
José Soriano (LAA) @ TOR (W) – 7.2 IP, 1 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 7 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 31% CSW, 103 pitches.
Soriano, I’m proud of you. I really wanted to see this from you after two rough outings and this was a lovely rebound. His curveball wasn’t the stud CSW offering of old, but he lived on the edges with fastballs, recording 35%+ CSW on both sinkers and four-seamers + the splitter did a great job earning outs and whiffs as it landed away to LHB with few mistakes. Now for the real challenge – a date with the Dodgers. Do you have it in you? (View Game Card)
Chris Bassitt (BAL) vs ATH (W) – 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 Hits, 1 BBs, 6 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 94 pitches.
Whoa! I think this is deserving of the Gold Star as Bassitt was able to take down left-handers for a change. His curveball was on point, but the 70% strike rate on his cutter was a huge difference, allowing him to score over 20% called strikes on his sinker. I’m happy for him, but there’s no way I’m endorsing a start agains the LHB-heavy Nats next weekend. Not a chance. (View Game Card)
Davis Martin (CHW) vs SEA (ND) – 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BBs, 9 Ks – 19 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 105 pitches.
Absolutely bonkers. Sure, he’s had a fantastic schedule n all, but Davis is holding a 27% strikeout rate and 5% walk rate. DAVIS. MARTIN. You told me you couldn’t trust guys with two first names. I did! I’m questioning everything now. Martin once again did a great job avoiding the heart of the plate, while he was a four-pitch arm to LHB and dominated with two fastballs and a legit slider to RHB. He’s simply pitching really well and Koufax hasn’t burned him. It’s pretty dang fun and even against the Cubs, how can you deny the guy right now? (View Game Card)
Nick Martinez (TBR) @ BOS (W) – 5.2 IP, 1 ER, 7 Hits, 0 BBs, 3 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 30% CSW, 80 pitches.
This train ain’t stopping for NOBODY. Well, maybe the Yankees in two weeks, but likely not the Marlins on Saturday. After all, Martinez was 1.5 ticks up on everything except the changeup, which is what you want. Mind doing a bit better than a per-batter 30% PAR next time? Could use a few more of them strikeouts. (View Game Card)
Jameson Taillon (CHC) @ TEX (L) – 5.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 90 pitches.
Atta boy Taillon. He gets the job done in great matchups, which includes the White Sox next weekend. Yes, I’d stream him there too, especially if that heater stays up and the curve + change stay down. Good ole BSB to LHB is a lovely sight. (View Game Card)
Walker Buehler (SDP) vs STL (ND) – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 Hits, 0 BBs, 2 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 22% CSW, 89 pitches.
Buehler has oscillated between 2 and 4 ER in each of his last five starts now, while featuring exactly four whiffs in three of his last four. So you’re saying…he’s not it. Oh. Right. He had terrible breaking ball feel and forced the Cards to deal with fastballs, save for the accidental front-hip curve to Walker that was sent over the fence for the sole blemish. Otherwise, it was fastballs and cutters that the Cardinals failed to punish, and that is not a sustainable approach. (View Game Card)
Sandy Alcantara (MIA) vs WSN (ND) – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 Hits, 2 BBs, 3 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 89 pitches.
Ehhhh, sure. Pretty wild to see Sandy go just 11% four-seamers and pump up the jams with sliders and changeups for nearly 65% of all his pitches, but here are. Not the best command of the lot as he stayed away from LHB and hurled sliders over the plate to RHB with a sprinkle of inside sinkers, but high strike rates on secondaries will generally get you through ballgames. You don’t seem confident. Because I’m not confident in Sandy. He’s not supposed to pitch backward, you know. But hey, he’s realizing he can’t just chuck fastballs all day and needed to make an adjustment, which may outline another solid start ahead against the Rays. All we can do is hope. (View Game Card)
Cade Cavalli (WSN) @ MIA (ND) – 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 95 pitches.
This is a good bottom line, though I’m not getting amped for Cavalli. The breakers aren’t enough for me to jump on board when facing lineups packing any sort of thump. (View Game Card)
Luis Severino (ATH) @ BAL (L) – 5.1 IP, 2 ER, 6 Hits, 4 BBs, 4 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 102 pitches.
This wasn’t a smooth Sevy outing away from home, where whiffs came at a hefty price. Why didn’t he pay it? He left his wallet in the clubhouse. What a dingus. Props to Sevy for battling as long as he could, but three straight baserunners in the sixth knocked him out of the game and he’s fortunate his bullpen stranded both runners. It’s not the worst start against the Giants in Sacré Verde next week, but he’s more of a 15-teamer Toby. (View Game Card)
Logan Henderson (MIL) vs NYY (ND) – 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 1 BBs, 5 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 74 pitches.
Henderson faced mostly LHB, making it less of a sweeper day and more about the fastball, cutter, and changeup, which he failed to locate along the edges, but he certainly lived inside the zone. That’s a solid line for such a strong offense (stupid Judge and his first inning HRs) and he should be easy money against the Twins on Friday. (View Game Card)
Bubba Chandler (PIT) @ SFG (ND) – 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 3 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 22% CSW, 77 pitches.
You know, that’s okay…? He held a whopping 62% zone rate across his arsenal, possibly understanding that he didn’t have to overthrow so much to be a successful arm. Even just throwing pitches down Broadway can be alright if batters aren’t chilling in 2-0 counts (but maybe in 1-0 counts, like the hanging slider for a solo shot). You could consider this progress, and maybe enough progress to hold for the Phillies up next. I see it as “Okay, I’m not going to lower you more, but I ain’t enthusiastic.” (View Game Card)
Drew Anderson (DET) @ KCR (L) – 2.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 Hits, 0 BBs, 4 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 41% CSW, 39 pitches.
Ahhhh, nothing quite like a bullpen game. What do you mean, there are a lot of things. True, there are many things in life that you can simply ignore. (View Game Card)
Payton Tolle (BOS) vs TBR (L) – 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 Hits, 0 BBs, 4 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 81 pitches.
Oh, so that’s how it’s going to be. Like the first few seasons of a sitcom, we’re gonna have a classic “will they, won’t they” scenario with every start. And the wild thing here – HE THREW STRIKES. The dude just got Singled Out and couldn’t put batters away (12% per-pitch PAR is atrocious). I’m not worried. Strikes are his biggest enemy and this will turn out better in the future. (View Game Card)
Carlos Rodón (NYY) @ MIL (ND) – 4.1 IP, 3 ER, 2 Hits, 5 BBs, 4 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 78 pitches.
This was a Still ILL and Rodón certainly justified the rule with terrible feel across the board, including tons of pitches missing up-and-armside. But the cool news? He sat 95/96 mph, not the 94 mph of 2025. Dude was throwing CHED. Now that this one is out of the way, get amped for the Subway Series next weekend. (View Game Card)
Noah Cameron (KCR) vs DET (ND) – 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 23% CSW, 95 pitches.
Blegh. After getting extra rest with a back issue, I wasn’t expecting Cameron to be on point and he certainly wasn’t with a 48% strike rate on his changeup, poor cutter locations, and a 56% strike four-seamer. What a disaster season it’s been thus far. I know there’s more talent in there, but why chase it now? (View Game Card)
Kai-Wei Teng (HOU) @ CIN (L) – 3.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BBs, 1 Ks – 4 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 63 pitches.
We had zero expectations and yet, I’m somehow still sad. (View Game Card)
Tyler Mahle (SFG) vs PIT (ND) – 5.2 IP, 4 ER, 5 Hits, 2 BBs, 8 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 97 pitches.
Hi, excuse me? Are you sure that’s correct? Uh huh, two solo shots, right, right, convenient hits from the Pirates, sure, sure, I WANT MY MONEY BACK. Mahle really hasn’t come through as much as I thought he would, even if I think he was a bit unfortunate here and against the Phillies. Now he gets Sacré Verde and I don’t see a reason to hold, even if he returned eight strikeouts in this one. I imagine you can snatch him back up if it goes well for 2x starts against the Sneks. (View Game Card)
Gavin Williams (CLE) vs MIN (L) – 6.0 IP, 5 ER, 10 Hits, 1 BBs, 6 Ks – 24 Whiffs, 36% CSW, 101 pitches.
Hmmmm. That’s 16 ER in three of his last four games, while allowing just 7 ER in his other six games combined. If that isn’t a Cherry Bomb, I don’t know what is. That fifth frame was a brutal Koufax left hook, featuring six hits in a classic case of getting Singled Out, despite Williams flexing an incredible ability to miss bats on all four of his main pitches for a Gallows Pole. Frustrating, I know. The Reds Carpet awaits him next weekend, though, so let’s not do anything silly, alright? (View Game Card)
Tomoyuki Sugano (COL) @ PHI (L) – 5.0 IP, 5 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BBs, 2 Ks – 7 Whiffs, 23% CSW, 81 pitches.
My dream! It’s SHATTERED! Is it weird that my dreams are the minor successes for unnoticed pitchers? Maybe. LET ME HAVE MY FUN. (View Game Card)
Eric Lauer (TOR) vs LAA (L) – 5.0 IP, 6 ER, 5 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 80 pitches.
Lauer fanned nine batters on March 29th. He’s fanned 13 total since. (View Game Card)
Justin Wrobleski (LAD) vs ATL (L) – 8.2 IP, 7 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BBs, 7 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 100 pitches.
I gotta say, this was weird. Wrobleski was Singled Out in a disastrous four-run second frame, but also returned six shutout frames through seven. At 80 pitches, the Dodgers shrugged, and let him continue. He somehow tossed a six-pitch inning despite allowing a single and a HR in the eighth (single, GBDP, HR, out), allowing him to return for the ninth, where he almost finished the game, but just had to hit Yaz on an up-and-in 1-2 four-seamer. Regression is a weird animal. It’s wild to see Wrobo Cop earn seven strikeouts and it raised his strikeout rate to 12.4%. His fastball/slider combo is still his whole jam, and I just don’t love it. Maybe it’s better against the Angels, but I’d prefer to ignore this entirely. (View Game Card)
