Today’s Headlines
Turang Goes Bang, Walks Yankees Off For Brewers’ Sweep
Same holiday. Same uniform number. Same result. A mere 20 years after Billy Hall hit a walk-off homer on Mother’s Day for the Milwaukee Brewers, Brice Turang did the same. Turang smashed a solo homer to center field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees with a 4-3 triumph. Turang turned around a first-pitch curveball from Yankees right-handed closer David Bednar for his sixth homer of the season and the Crew’s second walk-off in as many days. This was the first sweep by the Brewers of the Yankees since 1989, when Milwaukee was a member of the AL East. It was an emotional moment for another member of the Crew. Brewers outfielder Blake Perkins, who has been sent to the minors twice this season and was just recalled Saturday, hit a two-run go-ahead single in a three-run fourth inning for the team’s first hit of the game. But it was also a tribute to Perkins’ mom, who died as a result of colon cancer in July, making this the first Mother’s Day without her. Aaron Judge hit a solo homer for the Yankees and is tied for the MLB lead at 16 with Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies.
White’s Catch, Elder’s Pitching Lifts Atlanta Past Dodgers
There are catches and there are CATCHES. Atlanta right fielder Eli White turned in one of the latter. He smashed into the wall just after snaring Max Muncy’s drive with the bases loaded, ending the sixth inning. White’s catch preserved a 4-0 lead. That was the biggest play in what resulted in a 7-2 Atlanta victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. While White remained in the game for another inning, he left to undergo concussion tests. Mauricio Dubón had more luck with the bases loaded, driving in all three runs with a second-inning double for a 4-0 lead. Atlanta right-handed starter Bryce Elder kept the potent Dodgers lineup quiet for 5â…” shutout innings, giving up just one hit. He walked four and struck out eight.
deGrom Second-Quickest To 1,900 K’s, Silences Cubs
It was vintage Jacob deGrom. The Texas Rangers‘ right-handed starter struck out 10, surpassing 1,900 for his career, over seven shutout innings in a 3-0 victory over the formerly red-hot Chicago Cubs. In reaching 1,900 strikeouts, which came on his second K of the day when he retired Seiya Suzuki, deGrom became the second-fastest to the mark in games (256) and innings (1,578â…“). He now has 1,908 strikeouts. It was vintage in another way for deGrom. He improved to 5-0 in six rubber games of a series with a 1.22 ERA since joining the Rangers in 2023. Evan Carter hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to take a 1-0 game to 3-0. The Cubs had won their 10th straight for the second time this season before the Rangers won the final two games.
Soriano Sets Down 20 Straight, Adell Drills 2 Homers
Just anyone but the Chicago White Sox. That has to be what Los Angeles Angels right-handed starter José Soriano has to be thinking. Following his two worst starts of the season, coming back-to-back against the White Sox, Soriano was back to the form he has shown in every other start this season, retiring 20 straight in a 6-1 road victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Jo Adell provided the offense by smashing a pair of solo homers as part of a three-hit day. Soriano allowed one run on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in 7⅔ innings, lowering his ERA to 1.66. Soriano has yielded 10 runs in nine starts this year, eight of those coming in his nine innings vs. the White Sox.
Double Schwarbombs With A Side Of Sanchez
The Philadelphia Phillies are mashing again. And right-handed starter Cristopher Sánchez is grooving again. Kyle Schwarber hit a pair of solo Schwarbombs and Bryce Harper added a homer of his own to power the Phillies to a 6-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Sanchez struck out seven in seven scoreless innings, scattering six hits. Schwarber and Harper went back-to-back in the bottom of the first inning and Schwarber hit his 16th of the season in the second inning to put the Phillies up 5-0. Schwarber is tied for the MLB lead in homers with Judge.
By The Numbers
10 Oneil Cruz hit a solo homer in the fifth inning of the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ 7-6 loss in 12 innings to the San Francisco Giants. That gave him 10 homers and made him the third player in MLB history have at least 10 homers and 15 steals in his team’s first 40 games.
1 Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed starter Eduardo Rodriguez pitched into the ninth inning for the first time in his career during a 5-1 victory over the New York Mets. Rodriguez managed one out before being pulled, allowing one run on four hits.
48 The Miami Marlins lead MLB with 48 steals in 41 games. They pulled off two double steals in the same inning during a 5-2 win over the Washington Nationals.
Best Moments From Yesterday
Never Again
Baltimore Orioles manager Craig Albernaz almost got drilled by another foul ball Sunday, so then he took some steps to not get hit again like he did a few weeks ago.
Craig Albernaz 😂Foul ball came his way, and of course he had an incident earlier this year as well … so the former catcher donned catcher gear Baseball is the best

That First Walk-off Feeling
Jesus Rodriguez’s presence is one reason the Giants felt comfortable trading Patrick Bailey. His bat being a big factor. Rodriguez showed off that skill in notching his first walk-off hit, fisting a pitch to right to score the decisive run in the Giants 7-6 win in 12 innings over the Pirates.
Next Two-Way Player?
Boston Red Sox left-handed closer Aroldis Chapman spent a little time practicing taking grounders. Is first base in his future?
Aroldis Chapman doing infield drills? Yep.
