MLB News & Moments: Jacob Misiorowski Ks the Yankees

The Bombers are no match for the Miz.

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

On a day that included several memorable moments for youngsters and prospects, including the first career homer for Travis Bazzana, Ryan Waldschmidt getting a hit in his first at-bat, Spencer Jones making his Yankees debut, Justin Crawford hitting his first blast for the Phillies, and Munetaka Murakami making his case for Rookie of the Year, it also gave us an indelible moment in Boston.

With the Red Sox celebrating the 125th anniversary of their first-ever home game, Boston brought in all living members of their ring of honor, including the likes of David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez, to throw a combined ceremonial first pitch. The Sox would honor that legacy with a nice 2-0 win over the red-hot Rays, but that is almost beside the point. As always, baseball remains the best sport that ties the present with the past.

Today’s Headlines

The Miz (Part II)

A week ago, Jacob Misiorowski was featured in this column after tossing hitless ball before an early exit due to a cramp. While the issue was serious enough to push him to a full week of rest, it was worth the wait. Misiorowski came out firing against the AL-best Yankees, with a first inning that featured nothing but fastballs of at least 100mph. New York could never catch up to the Miz, who would go on to throw ten pitches of at least 103mph (!) as part of a six scoreless frames effort, allowing only two hits and two walks, against 11 strikeouts. The Brewer offense was quick to provide run support, with a four-run second inning that set the tone, as Milwaukee would cruise to a 6-0 shutout behind Miz and reliever Shane Drohan, who earned the ever-rare three-inning save. While Paul Skenes has reclaimed the early NL Cy Young hype, Misiorowski may not be far behind.

Let’s Play Two

As legendary Cub Ernie Banks usually suggested, playing two is always a great idea. But if playing two is great, how about getting two 10-game winning streaks in less than six weeks? Well, the Cubs have achieved just that, despite needing a bullpen game, with a comfortable 7-1 victory over the Rangers. Chicago’s offense was its relentless self, amassing nine hits and working six walks, building an early 3-0 lead that was a far cry from their recent flair for the dramatic. Despite only having the fifth-best run differential in the league, the Cubs are now in sole possession of the best record in baseball.

Miguel Showcase

In a matchup of juggernauts, LA and Atlanta started a premier series at Chavez Ravine, highlighted by the Miguel Rojas experience. The World Series hero was featured on a giveaway bobblehead and debuted custom cleats that showed a Michael Jordan-like silhouette of his now-iconic swing that tied Game 7. While Rojas did not factor much into the game (scoring once while going 0-for-3), the Dodgers rode this momentum to defeat the mighty Chris Sale, as the left would go on to allow three runs (two earned) over seven innings. Atlanta threatened all game long, but went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, as LA’s bullpen came up huge with five relievers combining for zero runs to secure the 3-1 victory.

Oh So Close Comeback

After last season’s disaster, the Rockies have become much more respectable in 2026, with a team that has managed to stay competitive in most games. Last night served as a prime example of that, as Colorado opened a 6-0 lead in Philadelphia, tagging starter Jesús Luzardo for six runs in only three innings. The Phillies would not relent, scoring twice in the sixth and then adding five in the eighth, as Colorado’s bullpen imploded in typical Rockies fashion. With the score tied at seven and a raucous crowd, the Rockies regained their composure, aided by Victor Vodnik’s two clutch innings, as the closer extended the game even as the Rockies could not score the Manfred Man in the tenth. The 11th would be different, as Colorado scored twice to retake the lead, and they would go on to win 9-7. Despite the valiant effort, the Phillies just found out that these are not your 2025 Rockies.

Never Ceases to Amaze

As the Blue Jays started the season with disappointing results, it has become abundantly clear that their star players need to step up their game. Last night, we saw a prime example of that, as the offense again scuffled against the much-maligned Angels staff, with Toronto being limited to only three singles. However, they also worked six walks to chase starter Reid Detmers early, and made the most of them with a Kazuma Okamoto RBI single and an Ernie Clement sac fly. The 2-0 early lead stood up thanks to the heroics of Dylan Cease, who had arguably his best start of 2026. With seven scoreless innings that featured no walks and ten strikeouts, Case lowered his ERA to 2.58 and earned his third win of the year. If Toronto can keep pitching like this, the burden on the offense will become less of a focus.

By The Numbers

300 With a solo blast against the Giants, Marcell Ozuna hit his 300th career homer. He became the 167th player in MLB history to reach that milestone.

8 Munetaka Murakami hit his league-leading 15th homer of the season against the Mariners. By doing so, he became the first player in MLB history to hit a homer in the first game of eight consecutive series.

3+3 Robbie Ray had an eventful third inning against the Pirates, as he walked three batters but also struck out the side, which allowed him to escape the frame unscathed. He became the first Giants pitcher since 1974 to achieve the rare feat of 3BB/3K in the same inning.

100 Friday was a good day for nice round multiples of 100. Freddie Freeman hit his 100th homer as a Dodger, while Kyle Schwarber hit his 200th long ball as a Phillie.

Best Moments From Yesterday

Guy’s a Pro

As a 25-year-old depth piece, Jim Jarvis is probably not expected to make much noise for a team full of stars like Atlanta. However, he made the most of his second career game, adding highlights on both sides of the ball. It all started in the fourth, when Jarvis made an improbable catch in the outfield, making sure that the score remained tied at the moment. In the next inning, Jarvis collected his first career hit, drawing plenty of cheers from his family in attendance. While Atlanta would go on to lose, Jarvis can now always boast of owning a Major League average.

Luke Used the Force

In what became the highest-scoring game on Friday, the Mariners and White Sox combined for 20 runs, 22 hits, and six homers, with Seattle prevailing by a 12-8 score that was as wacky as it sounds. The score was 5-5 after three frames, with both teams scoring four times in the third, which is where Luke Raley’s show started. Raley hit a clutch two-out grand slam to put Seattle in front, and then added another dramatic two-out blast in the seventh, turning a 6-5 lead into a 9-5 advantage that would be enough for the M’s to cruise. The eventful day included his first career grand slam, only the third multi-homer game of his career, and his best-ever RBI output, with seven.

From a Land Down Under

It took nine games and 27 at-bats, but Travis Bazzana has hit his first career homer. The moment was met with an euphoric celebration for the Australian phenom, as well as a nice celebration from his teammates and the Cleveland faithful. The swing would also be eventful, as it gave the Guardians a 4-0 lead in the first inning, allowing starter Parker Messick to settle down quickly. Messick would allow only one run as he earned his fourth win of the season, as Cleveland ultimately won 6-4.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ The Royals have placed lefty Cole Ragans on the 15-day IL with an elbow impingement. The move is retroactive to May 7, when Ragans was removed from a game after only 58 pitches. While Kansas City originally stated that the move was precautionary, taking an IL stint suggests that the issue may be more serious, especially for a pitcher who already has two Tommy John surgeries in his ledger. In his absence, the Royals could use Stephen Kolek in the rotation.

⚾ The Dodgers have placed Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day IL with lower back spasms. The injury first flared up during Wednesday’s game against the Astros, as Glasnow has had recurring back issues during his career. However, this move is expected to be precautionary, as LA has used the IL to keep pitchers fresh throughout the last few seasons. In better news, Blake Snell is expected to rejoin the Dodgers and start today.

⚾ In a scary moment during last night’s Milwaukee-New York contest, outfielder Brandon Lockridge had to be carted off the field following a crash into the wall, as he tried to make a catch in foul territory. The initial diagnosis is of a significant laceration on his right knee, though more time is needed to make a complete evaluation. The Brewers announced that Lockridge will be out for a while, as their depth will again be tested.
