MLB News & Moments You Should Know: 8/25/2025

Dodgers use 4 HRs to pull even with Padres; Raleigh hits pair for 49.

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

Broadcasters tie fans to the game of baseball. It all started before TV became the primary means for people to take in games, with radio broadcasters bringing the game to life with their words and making them iconic in their own way. Few had the connection with their audience like Bob Uecker, which made the ceremony honoring his life Sunday before the Milwaukee Brewers hosted the San Francisco Giants at American Family Field all the more special. Uecker was not only the Brewers’ longtime radio announcer for 54 years, but he was born and raised in the Milwaukee area and played for his hometown MLB team. The luminaries were plentiful, including Bob Costas, Robin Yount, George Brett and Ted Simmons. Fans turned out, too, with most of the sellout crowd in their seats more than an hour before first pitch. Check out the Best Moments section for more.

Today’s Headlines

Dodgers Power Up, Tie Padres For NL West Lead

With five weeks left in the regular season, the NL West is tied. But there will be no more games between the rival Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. Freddie Freeman hit a pair of homers, rookie Dalton Rushing crushed a tiebreaking three-run shot, and Shohei Ohtani went deep for the 45th time as the Dodgers regained a share of the West lead with an 8-2 win over the Padres at Petco Park to avoid a three-game sweep. The teams have identical 74-57 records entering the last week of August, but the Dodgers hold the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the season series 9-4. Freeman tied the game 2-2 with a solo shot in the sixth inning, then Rushing triggered a five-run seventh inning when he cranked out his third career homer, a three-run blast that snapped the tie and made it 5-2. Freeman added his 19th homer later in the seventh, a two-run shot, then Ohtani finished off the day’s scoring with his solo shot in the ninth. Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto went six innings, yielding two runs on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. It might have been an even more decisive victory for the Dodgers had Padres center fielder Ramón Laureano not robbed Teoscar Hernández of a grand slam in the top of the first inning.

Raleigh Hits 48th, 49th HRs To Eclipse Perez

Cal Raleigh’s already historic season is reaching new levels. The Seattle Mariners catcher hit his MLB-leading 48th and 49th homers of the season in an 11-4 win over the Athletics. Raleigh’s first-inning homer, a 448-foot two-run shot that is his longest of the season, then added his 49th, another two-run blast, an inning later to break the record for a primary catcher, held by Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals in 2021. Raleigh has 40 homers this season when in the lineup as a catcher, which is approaching the record of 42 by Atlanta’s Javy Lopez in 2003. It was also the ninth multi-homer game for Raleigh, passing Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees for the most by a switch-hitter. The most multi-homer games in a season is by Mariners legend Ken Griffey Jr. with 11 in 1997. Mantle holds the record for homers by a switch-hitter with 54. All of that backed up a career-high 13-strikeout performance by right-hander Logan Gilbert, who went six innings and allowed three hits and one walk. With the AL West-leading Houston Astros falling to the Baltimore Orioles 3-2, the Mariners pulled within two games of first place.

Duo Doubles Up As Yankees Avoid Sweep By Red Sox

Things were getting so bad with the New York Yankees that even the home fans were booing them. Wait, that happens when they win, too. Anyways, the Yankees prevented the sky from falling as Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham each hit a pair of homers in a 7-2 win over the rival Boston Red Sox. The four homers by that duo not only prevented a four-game sweep by the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium but snapped an eight-game losing streak in the season series. The Yankees sit in third place in the AL East, 5½ games behind the first-place Toronto Blue Jays, who lost to the Miami Marlins 5-3. The second-place Red Sox are five games behind the Jays. The Red Sox and Yankees hold two of the three AL wild-card spots. Chisholm hit a pair of two-run homers, in the second and eighth innings, to bookend the scoring, while Grisham’s were of the solo variety and came in the third and fifth innings. Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodón only allowed one hit in 5⅔ innings, but surrendered both of Boston’s sixth-inning runs thanks in part to five walks.

Skenes Continues Historic Start To Career

Paul Skenes has yet to pitch a full season in MLB, something he is likely to do this year. And with each game, the Pittsburgh Pirates‘ superstar right-hander continues to show that he will be among the all-time greats. Skenes threw seven scoreless innings as the Pirates blanked the Colorado Rockies 4-0. It was Skenes’ 50th career start and lowered his career ERA to 2.02, the second-lowest of any player in the live-ball era (1920). Only Vida Blue at 2.01 had a lower mark. Skenes only yielded three hits, didn’t walk a batter, and struck out seven in bringing his season ERA to 2.07. Jared Triolo hit a three-run homer during a four-run fourth inning.

Suarez K’s 11 As Phillies Stretch Lead To 7

All the Philadelphia Phillies needed to get them going in their series finale against the Washington Nationals was their battery. Left-hander Ranger Suárez struck out a career-high 11 in seven shutout innings, and backup catcher Rafael Marchán took advantage of a rare start to drive in three runs as the Phillies turned back the Nationals 3-2. Combined with the New York Mets‘ 4-3 loss to Atlanta, the Phillies now lead the second-place Mets by seven games in the NL East entering their three-game series at Citi Field beginning today. Suarez, who allowed only three hits and didn’t issue a walk, had two starts this week in which he had double-digit strikeouts, doubling his previous career total. Marchan, meanwhile, had a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning, then drew a bases-loaded walk in the third to account for all of the Phillies’ scoring. The Nationals did make it tight by scoring in the eighth and ninth innings, but Orion Kerkering picked up his fourth save of the season.

Taiwan Beats Las Vegas For LLWS Crown

Taiwan ended a 29-year title drought at the Little League World Series as Lin Chin-Tse retired the first 13 batters and hit a three-run triple in a 7-0 victory over Summerlin South of Las Vegas in the championship game. Taiwan, winning for the first time since 1996, lost in last year’s championship game to Lake Mary, Fla. Taiwan has the second-most titles with 18.

By The Numbers

Orioles right-handed starter Trevor Rogers allowed one run over seven innings during a 3-2 win over the Astros. Rogers has posted a 1.40 ERA in his first 13 starts for the Orioles, the best run by a starter in that number of games in club history.

Kansas City Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino hit his 28th homer of the season, a two-run shot during a six-run third inning during a 10-8 win over the Detroit Tigers. It was Pasquantino’s ninth homer in 14 games.

Rowdy Tellez, a left-handed hitter, cracked a two-run homer in the fourth inning of the Texas Rangers‘ 5-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians to complete a three-game sweep. Tellez’s homer came off right-hander Gavin Williams, who entered the game with an MLB-best .148 average allowed to left-handed hitters.

Marlins rookie Jakob Marsee had a bases-loaded triple and added a double in a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays. Marsee had 17 extra-base hits and 23 RBIs in 23 MLB games.

Injuries and Other Moves

The Phillies and Minnesota Twins will play in a Field of Dreams game during the 2026 season. Also, MLB will release its 2026 schedule on Tuesday.

The season is over for Texas Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien. A day after going on the 10-day injured list, it was revealed Semien will be out four to six weeks with a fractured third metatarsal and a sprained Lisfranc ligament in his left foot.

Atlanta left-hander Chris Sale is expected to be activated to start Saturday’s game. Sale has been on the 60-day IL with a fractured ribcage.

Atlanta released right-hander Erick Fedde, who was acquired about a month ago in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals after being designated for assignment. Also, left-hander Aaron Bummer went on the 15-day IL with inflammation in his throwing shoulder.

The Angels placed two right-handers on the 15-day IL in Victor Mederos and Carson Fulmer, as well as first baseman Nolan Schanuel, going to the 10-day IL. Mederos has right shoulder inflammation and Fulmer has right elbow inflammation. Schanuel has a bruised left wrist.

The Minnesota Twins promoted right-hander Taj Bradley from Triple-A to start Sunday.
