Welcome to the SP Roundup, my daily fantasy baseball article reviewing every starting pitcher’s performance from every Tuesday game. I apologize for the jokes written in my delirium in advance. Have questions? Ask me during my office hours on Twitch.tv weekday mornings from 10 am-12 pm ET.
Robert Gasser (MIL) vs CLE (ND) – 5.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 Hits, 2 BBs, 5 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 34% CSW, 92 pitches.
I’m a little upset that Robert Gasser had to pitch in Vegas last week. It made it hard for us to discern his skillset and while I had a hunch he was performing at a level worthy of a stream against the Guardians, I wish I had more clarity to push it and pad your numbers with Tuesday’s 5.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 Hits, 2 BBs, 5 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 34% CSW, 92 pitches (ND) performance.
This isn’t the most endearing arsenal as a 2.5 pitch-mix – hand-of-god sweepers (5″ of lift and 13″ sweep) with four-seamers and sinkers – and my biggest hesitation moving forward is his lack of slowball that would let him attend monthly SWATCH meetings. However, that four-seamer was incredible as a two-strike offering to RHB. Featured over 60% of the time in two-strike counts, that heater earned three strikeouts (albeit two against Stuart Fairchild), and its 14/15″ of vert at a low 23-degree arm angle with a generally flat HAVAA and seven feet of extension is clearly an effective option.
I’m surprised he wasn’t able to close the door to LHB with the sweeper, and I wish the sinker was able to sit along the east/west edges consistently, making his overall approach a little suspect when challenging a team like Atlanta on Sunday. That lineup is a bit wounded at the moment, but it’s enough haze that I’m hesitant to advocate a pickup, especially with an influx of options heading Milwaukee’s way with Woodruff and Henderson’s return on the horizon. Let’s see how every other SP did Tuesday:
Reid Detmers (LAA) @ ARI (W) – 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 0 BBs, 3 Ks – 4 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 90 pitches.
The string of success continues! You’re welcome. Oh hey, Koufax is here! I was getting anxious watching his slider return 1/28 whiffs as it landed too much in the zone, I had to do something! At least there was some pitch separation between the four-seamer and said slide piece, no? You mean the 1/42 whiff four-seamer? …yes? I can’t keep doing this forever. The next stop is Sacré Verde, I think he’s gonna need you. JARED! CANCEL ALL MY APPOINTMENTS. (View Game Card)
Justin Wrobleski (LAD) vs TBR (W) – 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 0 BBs, 5 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 30% CSW, 67 pitches.
It was fun seeing Wrobo Cop sit 96/97 mph in the first, even if that fell to 94 mph the following frame. However, I’m still not seeing the gains I’m looking for in the rest of his arsenal, though he’s at least incorporated the sinker into the mix at the cost of sliders, which performed beautifully at 75% strikes and 4/4 outs in play. We keep riding this one. (View Game Card)
Framber Valdez (DET) @ HOU (ND) – 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 6 Hits, 3 BBs, 6 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 92 pitches.
Huh. Valdez was back in Houston and I was hoping it would help him find the curveball. Nope, just good ole grounders galore with sinkers and changeups, wriggling out of jams like the good ole days. I’m terrified of two straight against the Yankees ahead. (View Game Card)
Dylan Cease (TOR) @ BOS (W) – 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 Hits, 4 BBs, 7 Ks – 16 Whiffs, 31% CSW, 108 pitches.
I feel like this is the Cease special – a poor WHIP but solid ERA and a handful of strikeouts. That’s a 36% strikeout rate thus far, you know. Yeesh. (View Game Card)
Logan Gilbert (SEA) vs BAL (W) – 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 Hits, 1 BBs, 10 Ks – 19 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 94 pitches.
He’s really pushing for that AGA tag to return and it’s hard not to love that. This was a wild one, where his four-seamer had a whopping 63% zone rate and everything else was 21% or lower. That high mark was the slider, which still earned a 37% CSW and 63% strike rate despite 5/19 thrown in the zone. Bonkers I tell ya! You never really know what you’re going to get from Gilbert on a given night – I don’t think he even knows – and it’s part of my concern elevating him to AGA again instead of keeping his Cherry Bomb tag. At the very least, it’s BOS, @CLE, TOR ahead and that’s all kinds of lovely. (View Game Card)
Brandon Young (BAL) @ SEA (L) – 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 Hits, 4 BBs, 2 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 23% CSW, 92 pitches.
This is a Wonka for those in standard leagues, but a PQS is acceptable as a stream for QS leagues. I do love that he went BSB with four-seamers and splitters to LHB, but I don’t like how well he executed the latter half with a paltry 36% strike rate and 0/22 whiffs on the pitch. Yikes. This is a clear avoid with @LAD, WSH, @CIN ahead. (View Game Card)
Foster Griffin (WSN) vs KCR (ND) – 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 Hits, 2 BBs, 6 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 100 pitches.
He’s a solid Toby who faced a weak lineup and did his job. It’s that simple, really. Now he gets a Phillies offense that doesn’t terrify me, and I’d be fine starting him there, too. (View Game Card)
Slade Cecconi (CLE) @ MIL (ND) – 5.2 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 30% CSW, 82 pitches.
That’s three straight for Cecconi, and he made up for his lack of whiffs with a 30% CSW, fueled by the 88/89 mph cutter + backdoor sinker to RHB. This was some stellar precision with the sinker, but I worry about his LHB approach still. Good news: He’ll get the Astros next with all their RHB hitters, and if there were ever a time to consider him in the QS tier, now is the time. And yet…I still don’t want to. I’M SORRY SLADE BRIGADE. (View Game Card)
Hunter Brown (HOU) vs DET (ND) – 5.2 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 3 BBs, 7 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 92 pitches.
It is so good to have you back. The curveball got more attention than I expected at identical 22% usage to both LHB and RHB, returning a lovely 35% CSW as the four-seamer missed frequently upstairs and armside to LHB at 96 mph. Not the most impressive start from Brown – 50% four-seamer strikes is not the foundation we’re used to seeing – but good enough for us to slot him into our lineups moving forward with this Still ILL out of the way. (View Game Card)
Drew Rasmussen (TBR) @ LAD (L) – 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 Hits, 0 BBs, 7 Ks – 17 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 102 pitches.
I get it, you were scared to toss Rasmussen against the Dodgers. Well, now that he not just came through, but did so with 17 whiffs and domination, I think we can all say the magic words together. Aces. Gonna. Ace. That four-seamer and cutter combo absolutely demolished LHB + a surprise changeup low in the zone returned 4/4 outs in play for good measure. He’s cooking and to see him at 102 pitches and seven frames is the peak we’ve waited so long from him to reach. This is the good stuff. (View Game Card)
Brady Singer (CIN) vs NYM (W) – 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 Hits, 3 BBs, 5 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 34% CSW, 91 pitches.
Wow, two straight productive starts for Singer! I want to give him the Gold Star as it’s simply so dang rare for him to come through, and this outing marked his highest CSW of the year, save for his four inning effort on March 28th. It was a start of high sinkers and low sliders to LHB, which is a new thing for Singe, and with a 52% strike rate on the slider, I don’t think it’s an approach that will work for a while. This feels like a Birthday Party. (View Game Card)
Andre Pallante (STL) vs SDP (W) – 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 0 BBs, 6 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 35% CSW, 92 pitches.
Ayyyyy, he did it again! The four-seamer was on the inner half to LHB and his slider went Dancing With The Disco to RHB without a hiccup. The sinker went more north-south than jamming inside to RHB, which worked, but was weird. I don’t think that was the gameplan. At any rate, I’ll move him onto The List next week with ARI + MIA up next, hoping that the two-step keeps the armside cut-fastball to LHB & a slide piece flirting with 88 mph. (View Game Card)
Zebby Matthews (MIN) @ TEX (W) – 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 8 Hits, 0 BBs, 4 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 31% CSW, 93 pitches.
Koufax, you really put in some work today! Some days I wake up and I have that energy, you know? Ah yes, like Merlin from The Sword in the Stone? They modeled him off me! This wasn’t a step forward for Zebby from a stuff perspective, but he was excellent at nailing the low slider to RHB in a way I haven’t seen from him thus far. His LHB approach doesn’t get anywhere near the same praise, though, and LAD + @NYY in two of his next three are enough for me to stay away. But it’s Rockie Road next Sunday! Okay, sure. That one’s fine. Not worth it if I have to commit to a two-step with the Dodgers, though. (View Game Card)
Jesús Luzardo (PHI) vs MIA (W) – 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 Hits, 2 BBs, 9 Ks – 14 Whiffs, 39% CSW, 106 pitches.
A King Cole from Luzardo in a glorious takedown of the Marlins, as it should be. He threw a ton of sinkers here, almost as if to showcase the pitch to them after they never taught it to him. Why didn’t you teach me to do this when I was here?! (View Game Card)
Gerrit Cole (NYY) vs CHW (W) – 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BBs, 6 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 90 pitches.
This was much better. I’m not quite ready to say “Yooooo, he’s dope now!” but we’re in a better spot. Too many poor misses up-and-arm side with everything, but it’s still better that I feel confident we’re past the whole “great stuff but where is it going?!” phase. (View Game Card)
Ryan Feltner (COL) @ CHC (ND) – 4.2 IP, 2 ER, 6 Hits, 3 BBs, 7 Ks – 13 Whiffs, 31% CSW, 104 pitches.
Whoa, seven strikeouts! And one out away from a dub! How could they pull him?! Because he was at 104 pitches. Oh, right. Welp, see ya later. (View Game Card)
Adrian Houser (SFG) @ ATL (ND) – 1.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BBs, 2 Ks – 3 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 29 pitches.
This game was suspended in the second frame, and you were saved, honestly. Let’s move on.
Michael Wacha (KCR) @ WSN (ND) – 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BBs, 3 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 90 pitches.
Is this a rebound outing for Wacha? It’s nearly a VPQS and his slowball returned just 2/27 whiffs, but he gained lost movement on all his secondaries and is still 18’19” vert on his four-seamer (53 degree arm angle, don’t forget). Maybe this is good enough @TBR next…? Yeah, I’m okay with that. At least he’s getting slowball strikes again, even if they aren’t spotted. (View Game Card)
Jack Perkins (ATH) vs PIT (ND) – 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 2 BBs, 6 Ks – 6 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 85 pitches.
We had a Careful, Icarus here with a HR + double + the showers to kick off the sixth, leading to two extra runs to his name without an out. He started off beautifully with five strikeouts across his first eight outs, leaning on backfoot breakers to LHB that I haven’t quite seen from him before. Speaking of those breakers, his sweeper was all over the place. Not just command, but its movement. Just look at this thing. I’m not sure what to make of it (just 2/24 whiffs from two of those punchouts, for what it’s worth), but there is some fun here in the 96 mph heater, 92 mph cutter, new slider at 86/87 mph that has two-plane movement at -6/-6″ break, and a kick-change that can be absolutely disgusting at 90 mph and over -5″ drop. The problem? I don’t trust the consistency. This was a start of brand new movement from so many offerings and while I like the changes, I don’t like the home park and his questionable command of it all. In a 15-teamer, I’d consider this with LAA, @LAA, MIA up next, but then again, it’s Sacré Verde for two of them. HE’S SO HARD TO FIGURE OUT. (View Game Card)
Mitch Keller (PIT) @ ATH (ND) – 5.1 IP, 4 ER, 5 Hits, 4 BBs, 7 Ks – 11 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 96 pitches.
Yep, that’s Keller. You should call him ole Keller. Dude. Do you know how that movie ends? …no…? Oh jeez. Anyway, he had a rough first frame after walking three of his first four batters, and to his credit, he settled down before a solo shot in the sixth ended his night. I’m glad he’s getting a good feel for the slider and sweeper to RHB, but we need a whole lot more than that. (View Game Card)
Payton Tolle (BOS) vs TOR (L) – 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 Hits, 2 BBs, 6 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 90 pitches.
This was a solid outing until two HRs led off the fifth, and guess what? The first was on a really bad changeup. At least he’s trying to expand the arsenal, right? What about the second one? A cutter inside that Giménez turned on. Not much you can do there. We keep rolling here. (View Game Card)
Michael King (SDP) @ STL (L) – 4.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 Hits, 3 BBs, 1 Ks – 4 Whiffs, 20% CSW, 93 pitches.
Where is that dang crown? My bread is so dry without it. SO VERY DRY. He’s so not locked in with his sinker and changeup, and I don’t blame anyone for dropping this HIPSTER as we wait for him to recover. You know the whole TIARA situation, it’s up to you if you want to stash him for, uh, three weeks as he gets ATL, LAD, @LAD in his next three games. Brutal. (View Game Card)
Grant Holmes (ATL) vs SFG (ND) – 2.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 Hits, 3 BBs, 2 Ks – 5 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 55 pitches.
This game was suspended due to the rain and it was a kindness for REB. He’s the broker you get from a cold email. Send them to spam, y’all. Good opportunities come from hard work and putting yourself in the position to get lucky – not from doing nothing and suddenly getting opportunities.
Kodai Senga (NYM) @ CIN (L) – 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 2 Hits, 4 BBs, 5 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 82 pitches.
It was a Still ILL for Senga in a terrible park. I’m thrilled he returned to 96 mph on his four-seamer with, honestly, awesome intent to go upstairs, but a little too high at times, while the cutter and ghost-fork were terrible friends. Y’all left me abandoned at the gas station! I don’t think he was so far away from being a productive arm, but with a date in Wrigley followed by PHI and @ATL, I don’t want to take the chance right now. (View Game Card)
Edward Cabrera (CHC) vs COL (L) – 4.1 IP, 5 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BBs, 3 Ks – 8 Whiffs, 21% CSW, 67 pitches.
Despite sitting a tick higher, Ecab couldn’t make it work. Why? Well that’s easy – the changeup went 44% strikes. Oh jeez, that’s more disappointing than the final season of Game of Thrones. Uhhh, no. Absolutely not. That was TERRIBLE. This? Another chapter of Edward’s frustrating 2026 as we roll our eyes and question if this HIPSTER is worth subsidizing his rent on our roster. The slowball should be better against the Mets, but that’s your call. (View Game Card)
Merrill Kelly (ARI) vs LAA (L) – 5.1 IP, 6 ER, 11 Hits, 1 BBs, 4 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 23% CSW, 88 pitches.
Duuuuude what?! His changeup failed him at a 45% strike rate and acted like an ostrich by frequently diving into the dirt. I wanted to do the same watching my ratios get blown up. Also, it’s sand, not dirt. LET ME HAVE THIS. I’m not ruling him out for the Cardinals and Rays, but that is seven straight of four strikeouts or fewer with two blowups in his last two (three if you included the near 2.00 WHIP in Seattle), and I get taking a break for a moment. (View Game Card)
Kumar Rocker (TEX) vs MIN (L) – 3.1 IP, 6 ER, 7 Hits, 2 BBs, 4 Ks – 10 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 70 pitches.
Womp womp. The only pitch he could get strikes with was the slider, while he allowed five of his seven hits on the rest of his arsenal, mostly in the heart of the plate. He didn’t go Dancing With The Disco well, did he. Noooope. I understand giving it another spin against the Marlins, but the ceiling is just so meh. There has to be better out there. (View Game Card)
Tyler Phillips (MIA) @ PHI (L) – 4.0 IP, 8 ER, 6 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 9 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 79 pitches.
Just like Gusto, Phillips didn’t pass the test against the Phillies. Too much risk at this point. (View Game Card)
Davis Martin (CHW) @ NYY (L) – 3.1 IP, 9 ER, 8 Hits, 3 BBs, 4 Ks – 12 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 88 pitches.
Oh. Maybe I was right to be harsh on him in last week’s edition of The List. The Yankees are no joke, of course, and this doesn’t mean Martin can’t be effective moving forward. But you want to rage drop him, I don’t think your going to heavily regret it. If you told me you were locked into starting him @DET, KCR, @CLE for the next three, I’d wager you’d be happy with it in a 15-teamer and maybe even a 12-teamer. (View Game Card)
