MLB News & Moments You Should Know: 5/10/2025

Skubal and Ohtani provide the winning edge.

Stay updated on everything baseball with our morning MLB News & Moments articles. We’ve got you covered to keep you in the know.

This is my first Mother’s Day weekend writing for Pitcher List, so this space is a shoutout to my mom. We’ve been baseball fans together since I got her to watch Atlanta on TBS in sixth grade. She washed dirt and grass stains out of uniforms from first grade through high school. After my career ended in the state championship tournament in my senior year (we didn’t win), she turned my lineup of t-shirt jerseys into a quilt. We text or talk about games daily, and she’s a PL reader now, so I know she’ll see this. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!

Don’t forget to watch every game with the Pitcher List community on Playback!

Today’s Headlines

Skubal Domination

Reigning American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal struck out 12, retired the first 15 Texas Rangers, and induced 32 whiffs in the Detroit Tigers‘ Major League-best 26th win. Skubal threw 70 strikes out of 96 pitches over seven innings and held the Rangers to one run on three hits. He’s sporting a career-best 32.5% whiff percentage. The Tigers gave Skubal just enough support for a one-run win, his fourth of the season.

Ohtani Outshines Arizona Onslaught

The Arizona Diamondbacks hit five homers, scored 11 runs, tallied 28 total bases, and lost 14-11 to the Los Angeles DodgersKetel Marte launched two homers, Eugenio Suárez hit his 11th, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a game-tying grand slam, and Randal Grichuk got his first of the season (back-to-back with Marte). The Dodgers outhit the D-backs 15-11, batting around for five runs in the third to take an 8-3 lead. After Arizona rallied to go up 11-8, Los Angeles sent nine up for a six-run ninth capped by Shohei Ohtani’s 3-run homer and demonstrative bat flip.

Fermin Walks Off BoSox in 12

The Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals played 10 scoreless innings and each put up a single run in the 11th before 8-hitter Freddy Fermin lashed a single to center field to win it in the 12th. Red Sox starter Hunter Dobbins threw six scoreless frames, and Michael Lorenzen threw seven, allowing three hits and no walks, for Kansas City. Lorenzen was the third Royal in as many games to go seven innings without giving up a run.

Paddack Stretches to 7th, Streak to 6

Chris Paddack had a perfect game going until it got mentioned on MLB Big Inning. The next pitch, with two outs in the sixth inning, was a single. The Minnesota Twins kept the San Francisco Giants at bay for a 3-1 win, their sixth in a row. This was Paddack’s first win this year and the first time pitching past the fifth inning this season. He finished the sixth, came back out for the seventh, and got an out in the eighth before exiting. Minnesota is within a game of getting back to .500.

Fedde for It

Erick Fedde threw his first career complete game in a shutout of the Washington Nationals. He struck out 8 and allowed six hits but no walks on 109 pitches. The St. Louis Cardinals‘ offense kept a steady stream of run support going while Fedde cruised, plating at least one in six different innings to win 10-0. This was Fedde’s first game as a visitor in Washington after spending the first six years of his big league career with the Nationals. He made it through six words of his postgame interview before being doused with two different coolers.

Mashin’ Martian

“Youngest Yankee ever to…” feels like a lofty accomplishment given the prodigious talent to wear pinstripes. Jasson Domínguez became the youngest New York Yankee to hit three home runs in a game. He bested a record held by Joe DiMaggio with two solo shots and a grand slam that put New York up 10-0 in the eighth. The Athletics tacked on a couple of runs but couldn’t keep up with The Martian’s career night.

Best Moments From Yesterday

Welcome to the Varsho

If Daulton Varsho ever needs his own version of Michael Jordan’s Jumpman logo, a still from this home run robbery would work. I hope his fellow Toronto Blue Jays get that made, stick it on t-shirts, and wear them before games.

Debut win for Kelly

New Pittsburgh Pirates manager Don Kelly is 1-0 after a 3-2 win over Atlanta. The most interesting comments on the managerial change came from NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes, who talked about accountability, playing better, figuring out the goal for the season, and growth that could keep 2025 from being a “completely lost season.”

Henry to Devers

Red Sox owner John Henry flew to Kansas City to meet with designated hitter Rafael Devers after the team’s request that the star switch to first base publicly did not go well. Neither Henry nor Devers commented on the meeting afterward. Devers had the lone RBI for Boston on Friday night.

Pope Leo XIV at the World Series

The internet can be astonishing. The first American pope was at the fall classic 20 years ago, and this video surfaced quicker than it took to select him. Game 1 was a 5-3 win for the eventual champion Chicago White Sox.
