Starting Pitcher Streamer Rankings Fantasy Baseball: 7/9 & 7/10

Nick Pollack ranks the starting pitcher streamers for today & tomorrow.

Here are today and tomorrow’s daily SP Streamer rankings for fantasy baseball.

Every day of the 2024 baseball season, I’ll be looking at today and tomorrow’s slate of scheduled starting pitchers and ranking their matchups for your fantasy baseball streams.

There’s a lot that goes into this and you can hang out with me on Playback.tv/pitcherlist to talk about the specific ranks as I make them every weekday morning from 10am – 12pm ET. If you have questions about these ranks, please ask during the morning Playback AMA. Those are my office hours as I generally don’t answer comments on the site.

There are four tiers to these rankings with 12-teamers in mind:

Auto-Start – Just do it. Don’t overthink this, start the man. This includes “if I have them rostered, I’m starting them” pitchers.

Probably StartI’m likely starting these arms, though I recognize there is more risk than we’d like there to be. Either it’s a tough matchup for a good-not-elite pitcher or a weak lineup for a volatile arm. These pitchers have a 50% or greater chance of performing well in my view and I’m starting them in the majority of situations.

Questionable Start – Think of this tier as “I don’t want to start these pitchers in a vacuum, but you could do worse.” Streamers found in this tier are not pitchers I’m targeting and are only if you are in dire need of one. To play it safe with streaming, just start the Probably Start streamers.

Do Not Start – The reward is not worth the risk. Don’t do it. Seriously, these pitchers have a very slim chance of success or sometimes none at all.

Obviously, there will be circumstances where pitchers should move between teams for your situation specifically and these new tiers should act as a little more help than the straight table from last year.

Please keep in mind that streaming is far from a perfect play. In fact, if they work out over half the time, I’d consider it a success. These matchup rankings & streamer picks are going to be wildly different than the actual results throughout the year, so please, have sympathy before the scathing comments and tweets. I’m only trying to help!

Make sure to read the notes if you’re wondering why I’m favoring certain pitchers over others – I won’t get to everyone and hopefully I answer what questions you will have.

There is a second table for tomorrow’s starting pitcher matchups as well, helping everyone get a jump on their nightly pickups. Please note that these matchups are subject to change, though, and there will be times when I have the incorrect pitcher going. I thank you for your future understanding.

Finally, there are my streaming picks of the day, and please keep in mind that I am forced to pick a streamer every day. Those highlighted in Green are that day’s streaming pick in the second tier and I’d roll with them everywhere. Those in Yellow are in the third tier and should be okay if you’re searching for something on a given day, but I don’t recommend streaming unless you’re in need. Finally, those are Red are those I really don’t want to start (they are labeled as “Do Not Start”, after all) but have no other choice. Don’t stream these guys until you are truly desperate. A streaming pick is defined as “rostered in 20% or fewer leagues according to Fantasy Pros. This really emphasizes the point that I’d be happy if over 50% of these worked. I could do the whole sub 30/40% rostered, but there’s no fun in that. You can use the rankings to realize who those picks would be instead.

(Opener) – Outlines that a pitcher is being opened for that day & the pitcher listed will follow the opener.

As I do my rankings, I thought it would be helpful to showcase a table of how we’re ranking offenses (in alphabetical order by tier):

Nick’s Loose Team Offense Rankings (Updated 7/1)

I’m sure it’ll change through the year + there are differences to be made about teams vs. LHP or RHP, but it works as a general table that y’all should keep in mind.

Alright, let’s get to it.

To spice up these streaming recommendations, I’ve included our new daily fantasy baseball projections powered by PLV, and I’ll be competing against PL Bot to pick the best streaming option each day.

These projections are different from your typical projections as they incorporate our pitch quantifier, assessing pitcher and hitter skills at a much more granular level than your standard box score.

The streaming record is determined by “Was this a productive game for 12-teamers if I started them?” Roughly a PQS with a Win and a strikeout per inning with a sub 1.20 WHIP, with a minimum of 5 IP. Close calls are decided by Playback chat.

Today’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

Auto Starts

UPDATE: Chris Sale @ ARI – Aces gonna ace.

Zack Wheeler vs. LAD – Aces gonna ace. Don’t care that it’s the Dodgers.

Logan Gilbert @ SDP – Aces gonna ace.

Bailey Ober @ CHW – He’s in peak form and gets the CrySox.

Ronel Blanco vs. MIA – Blanco vs. the Marlins is a dream.

Zac Gallen vs. ATL – Gallen is throwing harder and should do well against Atlanta.

Jake Irvin @ NYM – You’re not benching him now.

Probably Starts

Carlos Rodón @ TBR – Just 25% heaters last time is a pretty cool thing + it’s the Rays.

Yusei Kikuchi @ SFG – Slider focus is back and the four-seamer should overwhelm.

Max Scherzer @ LAA – He’s not his old self, but good enough to deal with the Angels.

Ryan Pepiot vs. NYY – It’s not the best matchup and his command has been wonky, but hot dang, the ceiling.

Michael Wacha @ STL – This is a safe Toby play against a mediocre squad.

Ben Lively @ DET – Lively is rolling and gets another great matchup.

UPDATE: Nick Lodolo vs. COL – Lodolo is returning from his blister IL stint and while it can be considered a Still ILL, I think it’s a short enough stint that he’ll have a decent pitch count + it’s Rockie Road.

Erick Fedde vs. MIN – He’s a Toby against a team without Royce.

Jose Quintana vs. WSN – Quintana’s command is where we want it to be.

Brayan Bello vs. OAK – The changeup came back last outing and we should feel safe against the Athletics. Let’s hope that wasn’t a Dennis.

Dean Kremer vs. CHC – Kremer excelled in his last outing and could steal a Win with some strikeouts.

Questionable Starts

Bobby Miller @ PHI – The line was fine last time, but I’m still not sold his command is there. The Phils will have Schwarber back, too.

Charlie Morton @ ARI – He will always be a Cherry Bomb.

Frankie Montas vs. COL – Maybe six innings are in the cards?

Andre Pallante vs. KCR – He can chuck heaters over the plate and get away with it.

Jameson Taillon @ BAL – Taillon has found punchouts lately, but this is the Orioles. Be careful.

Colin Rea vs. PIT – Rea’s recent success surely won’t last, but this is the Pirates…

Do Not Starts

Blake Snell vs. TOR – This is a clear Still ILL as we don’t expect him to go very long.

Cal Quantrill @ CIN – The splitter goes in-and-out and it’s Cin City. It’s too risky.

Adam Mazur vs. SEA – The Mariners are a crew that could enable his high heater to return more strikes than usual.

Joey Estes @ BOS – I know he just went the distance like Hercules, but Fenway is not a place you want to pitch.

Trevor Rogers @ HOU – He’s not ready.

Kenta Maeda vs. CLE – Don’t start Maeda. It’s such a low floor.

Quinn Priester @ MIL – Absolutely not.

Roansy Contreras vs. TEX – He’s not even stretched out yet.

Tomorrow’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

Auto Starts

Corbin Burnes vs. CHC – Aces gonna ace.

Sonny Gray vs. KCR – Aces gonna ace.

Pablo López @ CHW – I know it wasn’t ideal against Houston, but he pitched well. Should be a breeze against the CrySox.

Michael King vs. SEA – He’s killing it and it’s the Mariners.

Tanner Bibee @ DET – He had a hiccup and now gets the Tigers.

Shota Imanaga @ BAL – Imanaga has a legit challenge and needs to showcase that the IM AN AGA prophecy is true.

Probably Starts

Nick Pivetta vs. OAK – It’s Oakland + Pivetta had his cutter and sweeper back.

Logan Webb vs. TOR – He’s a sturdy Holly.

Chris Bassitt @ SFG – You start Bassitt and forget about it.

Framber Valdez vs. MIA – This is an obvious play against the Marlins…and yet you don’t really know if he’ll be what you want him to be.

Reese Olson vs. CLE – Olson has at least eight strikeouts in three of his last four games.

Marcus Stroman @ TBR – Stroman is a Toby against a weak offense.

Bryce Miller @ SDP – He has Cherry Bomb tendencies, but the heater is too good to pass up.

Zach Eflin vs. NYY – I’m a little scared of this one, but the Yankees haven’t been a consistent offense.

Gavin Stone @ PHI – Stone gets a proper challenge against the Phillies and we’re rolling with it. Please have your changeup.

Michael Lorenzen @ LAA – A decent Toby against a poor offense.

Questionable Starts

Drew Thorpe vs. MIN – I’m optimistic Thorpe will have his changeup against an offense that sorely misses Royce.

Tobias Myers vs. PIT – Myers went through a bit of turbulence last time out, but it’s the Pirates. His depth of repertoire makes him a considerable option and able to make it to six frames.

Cristopher Sánchez vs. LAD – He was incredible, then horrific, and now gets the Dodgers. Good luck.

Luis Severino vs. WSN – I don’t love Severino’s ability, but it’s the Nationals and he can return a Quality Start.

Charlie Morton @ ARI – He will always be a Cherry Bomb.

Frankie Montas vs. COL – Maybe six innings are in the cards?

Do Not Starts

Alec Marsh @ STL – Ehhhhh, I can see some gravitating toward this one and I just don’t like Marsh’s mix.

Griffin Canning vs. TEX – Canning is fine, but the Rangers are waking up a touch.

JP Sears @ BOS – Sears is a Cherry Bomb inside Fenway and needs a few more Domino packets.

Kyle Freeland @ CIN – Freeland’s command has improved and at least it’s outside Coors…?

Martín Pérez @ MIL – Pérez is pitching as well as he can, but it’s the Brewers and the ceiling is limited.

Slade Cecconi vs. ATL – At least he throws strikes.

Patrick Corbin @ NYM – At least he’s trying new things.

Bryan Hoeing @ HOU – At least he has a chance to go four frames…
