The third and final relief pitcher rankings for today are our cumulative saves plus holds (SV+HLD) list. While the opportunity for these counting stats is certainly taken into consideration, it’s typically hard to gauge with bullpen usage being so fluid throughout the season for most teams. The bulk of the rankings are derived from swing-and-miss ability (stuff), expected outcome stats, and a little bit of HOTEL mixed in. Also, keep in mind that holds are much more volatile and harder to predict. We’ve only seen 15 seasons from a pitcher with more than 30 holds since 2016, while 67 closers have gone over 30 saves in that same time frame.

PITCHER | TIER | INJURY (SURGERY DATE). NOTES |
---|---|---|
Liam Hendriks | 2 | NHL. Currently no timetable to return. As much as I’d love to see him back this year, he has a long road of treatment ahead of him and we wish him nothing but the best in his recovery. |
Andrew Kittredge | 3-4 | TJS (6/22/22). Should make a return some point around/after the All-Star break. |
Blake Treinen | 4-5 | Rotator Cuff (11/11/22). May be able to return by September. |
Chad Green | 4-5 | TJS (6/1/22). Should make a return some point around/after the All-Star break. |
Tanner Rainey | 4-5 | TJS (8/3/22). Doubtful for 2023, but could make an appearance in September. |
J.P. Feyereisen | 5-6 | Rotator Cuff (12/7/22). Could return in the second half, but very questionable. |
Anthony Bender | 5-6 | TJS (8/31/22). Likely out for all of 2023. |
Garrett Crochet | 6-7 | TJS (4/5/22). Should return around/before the All-Star break. |
