Starting Pitcher Streamer Rankings Fantasy Baseball: 5/5 & 5/6

Nick Pollack ranks the starting pitcher streamers for today & tomorrow.

Here are today and tomorrow’s daily SP Streamer rankings for fantasy baseball.

Every day of the 2024 baseball season, I’ll be looking at today and tomorrow’s slate of scheduled starting pitchers and ranking their matchups for your fantasy baseball streams.

There’s a lot that goes into this and you can hang out with me on Playback.tv/pitcherlist to talk about the specific ranks as I make them every weekday morning from 10am – 12pm ET. If you have questions about these ranks, please ask during the morning Playback AMA. Those are my office hours as I generally don’t answer comments on the site.

There are four tiers to these rankings with 12-teamers in mind:

Auto-Start – Just do it. Don’t overthink this, start the man. This includes “if I have them rostered, I’m starting them” pitchers.

Probably Start – I’m likely starting these arms, though I recognize there is more risk than we’d like there to be. Either it’s a tough matchup for a good-not-elite pitcher or a weak lineup for a volatile arm. These pitchers have a 50% or greater chance of performing well in my view and I’m starting them in the majority of situations.

Questionable Start – Think of this tier as “I don’t want to start these pitchers in a vacuum, but you could do worse.” Streamers found in this tier are not pitchers I’m targeting and are only if you are in dire need of one. To play it safe with streaming, just start the Probably Start streamers.

Do Not Start – The reward is not worth the risk. Don’t do it. Seriously, these pitchers have a very slim chance of success or sometimes none at all.

Obviously, there will be circumstances where pitchers should move between teams for your situation specifically and these new tiers should act as a little more help than the straight table from last year.

Please keep in mind that streaming is far from a perfect play. In fact, if they work out over half the time, I’d consider it a success. These matchup rankings & streamer picks are going to be wildly different than the actual results throughout the year, so please, have sympathy before the scathing comments and tweets. I’m only trying to help!

Make sure to read the notes if you’re wondering why I’m favoring certain pitchers over others – I won’t get to everyone and hopefully I answer what questions you will have.

There is a second table for tomorrow’s starting pitcher matchups as well, helping everyone get a jump on their nightly pickups. Please note that these matchups are subject to change, though, and there will be times when I have the incorrect pitcher going. I thank you for your future understanding.

Finally, there are my streaming picks of the day, and please keep in mind that I am forced to pick a streamer every day. Those highlighted in Green are that day’s streaming pick in the second tier and I’d roll with them everywhere. Those in Yellow are in the third tier and should be okay if you’re searching for something on a given day, but I don’t recommend streaming unless you’re in need. Finally, those are Red are those I really don’t want to start (they are labeled as “Do Not Start”, after all) but have no other choice. Don’t stream these guys until you are truly desperate. A streaming pick is defined as “rostered in 20% or fewer leagues according to Fantasy Pros. This really emphasizes the point that I’d be happy if over 50% of these worked. I could do the whole sub 30/40% rostered, but there’s no fun in that. You can use the rankings to realize who would be those picks, instead.

(Opener) – Outlines that a pitcher is being opened for that day & the pitcher listed will follow the opener.

As I do my rankings, I thought it would be helpful to showcase a table of how we’re ranking offenses (in alphabetical order by tier):

Nick’s Loose Team Offense Rankings (Updated 4/29)

I’m sure it’ll change through the year + there are differences to be made about teams vs. LHP or RHP, but it works as a general table that y’all should keep in mind.

Alright, let’s get to it.

This year, with our new daily fantasy baseball projections powered by PLV, I’ll be competing against PL Bot to pick the best streaming option each day.

The streaming record is determined by “Was this a productive game for 12-teamers if I started them?” Roughly a PQS with a Win and a strikeout per inning with a sub 1.20 WHIP, with a minimum of 5 IP. Close calls are decided by Playback chat.

Nick’s 2024 Streamer Record: 25-13

Today’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

Auto Starts

Freddy Peralta @ CHC – Aces gonna ace. That four-seamer command should return.

Tarik Skubal @ NYY – Aces gonna ace. Velocity is back.

Joe Ryan vs. BOS – Aces gonna ace.

Logan Webb @ PHI – Aces gonna ace.

Ryan Pepiot vs. NYM – It’s the Mets. Pepiot is dope.

Garrett Crochet @ STL – Crochet now has a changeup, making a proper four pitch mix. Wild, I know.

Max Fried @ LAD – Aces gonna ace…against the Dodgers. Easily the worst matchup here and Fried lands at the bottom of the top tier even if he’s been superb lately.

Probably Starts

Nestor Cortes vs. DET – Cortes should have a day at the park against the Tigers.

MacKenzie Gore vs. TOR – Gore’s skills have been fantastic. Let’s see them hold against a hot/cold Jays crew.

Bryce Miller @ HOU – Miller didn’t care for last week’s tough matchup and we’ll let it ride.

Javier Assad vs. MIL – He’s a Vargas Rule and those who have im are starting him.

Luis Severino @ TBR – The Rays jumped on Quintana, but I still label them as a solid offense to stream against.

Questionable Starts

Kyle Gibson vs. CHW – Is it time to actually believe in Gibson…?

Nick Lodolo vs. BAL – The Orioles pummel LHP, while Lodolo is sure to collect strikeouts.

Bailey Falter vs. COL – It didn’t fare well in his first of two starts, but this is Rockie Road.

Jon Gray @ KCR – His slider is great, will the four-seamer be enough?

Cooper Criswell @ MIN – Cooper quietly performed early in the week and the Twins aren’t fierce.

Hunter Brown vs. SEA – We know the stuff is there and is this the start Brown clicks into place?

Do Not Starts

Alek Manoah @ WSN – Is he actually good enough to go? Do you really want to throw him out there?

Sixto Sánchez @ OAK – I’m not ready to jump back in on Sixto even if he gets the Athletics here.

Taijuan Walker vs. SFG – Walker is looking rough, though he could find a way through 5+ against the Giants.

Griffin Canning @ CLE – He’s still a bit too hittable for my liking. Good to see him avoid the heart of the plate with four-seamers lately, though.

Dean Kremer @ CIN – It’s a decent Win chance, but it’s also Cin City for a guy without an overwhelming arsenal. His last two starts have resulted in success, one with 17 four-seamer + cutter whiffs, the other with just…one.

Carlos Carrasco vs. LAA – Who wins, the mediocrity of Carrasco or the mediocrity of the Angels?

Joe Boyle vs. MIA – Even against the Marlins, Boyle isn’t your guy. He still has to throw strikes, after all.

Ryan Feltner @ PIT – Even on the road, I wouldn’t trust Feltner.

Ryne Nelson vs. SDP – It’s a clear Still ILL as Nelson returns from taking a comebacker to the arm.

Matt Waldron @ ARI – Don’t Trust A Knuckleballer.

James Paxton vs. ATL – Paxton has been declining across the last few weeks and it’s Atlanta.

UPDATE: Matthew Liberatore – I’m not sure how long he goes in this one, let alone with production relevant for fantasy.

Daniel Lynch IV vs. TEX – Absolutely not.

Tomorrow’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

Auto Starts

Zack Wheeler vs. SFG – Aces gonna ace.

Cole Ragans vs. MIL – Aces gonna ace.

Luis Castillo @ MIN – Aces gonna ace.

Probably Starts

Walker Buehler vs. MIA – He’s back! And it’s a great matchup! And it’s a Still ILLright? …yeah. Maybe. I think you’re safe.

Justin Steele vs. SDP – This is also a Still ILL that we feel okay about, with a little more encouragement given it wasn’t an arm injury, but against a tougher offense.

Andrew Heaney @ OAK – Our streaming pick is Heaney, who has pulled off the BSB effectively lately and now gets a solid matchup.

Tyler Anderson @ PIT – Anderson has been a decent Toby and the Pirates aren’t scary.

Triston McKenzie vs. DET – He has a bum elbow but was at 91+ mph and had a better curveball + this is Detroit.

Sean Manaea @ STL – Manaea has a kitchen sink of options against a Cardinals crew that is struggling.

Questionable Starts

Yu Darvish @ CHC – One more Still ILL for the road, this time with a volatile pitcher who likely isn’t stretched out properly.

Mitch Keller vs. LAA – He’s a Cherry Bombeven against the Angels.

Kyle Gibson vs. NYM – He’s been crusing lately, but it’s rare for Gibson to be a dependable arm, even with his sweeper working.

Tyler Alexander vs. CHW – It’s a solid matchup, but T-Lex isn’t anything special.

Kenta Maeda @ CLE – More Cherry Bomb stuff here from Maeda.

Do Not Starts

Mike Clevinger @ TBR – I’d personally like to avoid Clevinger everywhere.

Simeon Woods Richardson vs. SEA – If his command is good enough, this can work.

Alex Wood vs. TEX – There is some rare Wood magic here and there.

Bryse Wilson @ KCR – I wouldn’t expect Wilson to repeat his last performance in the slightest.

Braxton Garrett @ LAD – It’s the final Still ILL of four, with the lowest ceiling and worst matchup.

TBD Giants SP @ PHI – Whoever this is, I wouldn’t roll the dice. Could be a bullpen game.
