Today’s Headlines

2024 All-Star Game pitchers and reserves announced

Major League Baseball announced the 2024 All-Star pitchers and reserves last night! Veterans like Corbin Burnes, Chris Sale, Rafael Devers, and Freddie Freeman return to the Midsummer Classic, but there are so many first-time All-Stars who earned an invite. Congratulations to the following players making their first All-Star Team:

Salvy records career hit No. 1,500

Royals’ backstop Salvador Perez recorded career hit No. 1,500 on Sunday, putting him in elite company. He joins George Brett as the only Kansas City Royals with 1,500 hits and 250 home runs. He’s also one of seven catchers in baseball history with 1,500 hits, 260 home runs, and 9 All-Star selections; the other six (Johnny Bench, Yogi Berra, Gary Carter, Carlton Fisk, Mike Piazza, and Ivan Rodriguez) are Hall of Famers.

First all-female broadcast in Cubs history

Beth Mowins, Elise Menaker, and Taylor McGregor became the first all-female Cubs broadcast in team history on Sunday afternoon. Mowins, a play-by-play veteran, worked next to Menaker in the booth and with McGregor on the field.

The trio discussed their journeys from loving sports as young girls to now making history in their professional careers. Then the game began and it was less about this rare, history-making moment and more about just doing their job. All three women were fantastic and the game filled me with so much joy. I hope we get to see and hear more women-led broadcasts that showcase all the diverse and talented women in this industry.

All-Star reactions

One of my favorite things is getting to see a player’s reaction to getting called up or being named an All-Star, so I’ve compiled a few of my favorite videos for the best moments section.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ SP Blake Snell is scheduled to start on Tuesday vs. Toronto.

⚾ SP Bryan Woo is lined up to start on Thursday vs. the Angels in LA.

⚾ SS Carlos Correa left Sunday’s game with a right finger contusion after being hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative, so consider him day-to-day.

⚾ OF/DH Yordan Alvarez did not play Sunday after leaving Saturday’s game early with a knee injury

⚾ 2B Ketel Marte, who missed the past two games with back tightness, should be back in the lineup tomorrow

⚾ DH Kyle Schwarber is expected to be activated for the Phillies series vs. the Dodgers on Tuesday, and 1B Bryce Harper “remains in play to be activated on Tuesday.”
