Welcome back to another week of Rumor Roundup, where we dive into all the recent talk, transactions, and trends from around the league, balancing both fantasy baseball implications and real-world baseball analysis through the lens of a front office.
Trades Galore!
To start the week off with a bang, the Boston Red Sox acquired infielder Curtis Mead from the Washington Nationals in exchange for young left-hander Connelly Early.
Mead, 25, provides the Red Sox with some much-needed right-handed power. He pulls the ball in the air at an exceptional 22.5% clip — a perfect fit for Fenway Park — and boasts one of the best approaches in baseball. On the other hand, Early becomes the highest ceiling arm in the Nationals rotation over night. Batters have been more patient with the 24-year-old rookie this season, hence the dip in effectiveness, but make no mistake: Early is a dynamic left-hander and has a deep enough arsenal to be a successful starting pitcher.

Then earlier today, we saw two notable trades get called in. First, the Cleveland Guardians traded C Bo Naylor and RHP Codi Heuer to Milwaukee Brewers for CF Blake Perkins and RHP Craig Yoho.
Yoho is the prize of the trade, boasting an intriguing five-pitch mix headlined by a changeup that has missed bats at a 35% clip. The offering also owns a .187 xBA and .230 xwOBA on 46% usage. His fastballs are pretty mediocre but can play up thanks to elite 7.1 ft extension. Perkins, 29, has never posted a wRC+ above 90 throughout his big league career but he’s a career +21 DRS / +16 OAA / +16 FRV defender in the outfield.
Naylor, 26, has been a breakout candidate year after year but hasn’t found his rhythm at the major league level since posting a 123 wRC+ through 67 games in 2023. He’s a good defender and has made great strides in making zone contact (up to 94% this year), but a 22 wRC+ just doesn’t cut it. He pulls the ball in the air at an elite rate, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Brewers tap into something with the young backstop. Heuer, 30, is another big extension arm (7.2 ft) that the Brewers will look to optimize.
Moments later, the New York Yankees traded RHP Camilo Doval to Pittsburgh Pirates for C Omar Alfonzo and OF Luis Cruz.
Doval’s performance has been poor and he’s owed significant money next season. The flamethrower just hasn’t been the same since Andrew Bailey left in San Francisco. Doval still generates plenty of ground balls but his K% has been on a steady decline since submitting a career-high 31% mark in 2023. Paired with a 10% walk rate and subpar command, it’ll be a project for the Pirates to piece back together one of the more dynamic arms of the 2020s (when he’s right).
Alfonzo and Cruz are mid tier additions. Alfonzo, 22, is Rule 5 eligible and slashing .239/.338/.420 with a 100 wRC+ in Double-A this season. The quality of contact is okay but he’s some ways out from proper playing weight and his lack of contact skills are a bit concerning. Cruz is the prize of the trade between the two prospects. He’s slashing .313/.460/.396 with a 133 wRC+ in the DSL. While the SLG isn’t quite there yet, his contact skills are impeccable — Cruz boasts a video game-esque 3.1% strikeout rate, 4% SwStr rate, and 90% contact rate through 17 games this season.

- Orioles acquired C Jake Rogers via the Tigers in exchange for RHP Zane Barnhart
- Twins acquired LHP A.J. Minter via the Mets in exchange for SS Bruin Agbayani and 3B Billy Amick
