Starting Pitcher Streamer Rankings Fantasy Baseball: 7/31 & 8/1

Nick Pollack ranks the starting pitcher streamers for today & tomorrow

Here are today and tomorrow’s daily SP Streamer rankings for fantasy baseball.

Every day of the 2024 baseball season, I’ll be looking at today and tomorrow’s slate of scheduled starting pitchers and ranking their matchups for your fantasy baseball streams.

There’s a lot that goes into this and you can hang out with me on Playback.tv/pitcherlist to talk about the specific ranks as I make them every weekday morning from 10am – 12pm ET. If you have questions about these ranks, please ask during the morning Playback AMA. Those are my office hours as I generally don’t answer comments on the site.

There are four tiers to these rankings with 12-teamers in mind:

Auto-Start – Just do it. Don’t overthink this, start the man. This includes “if I have them rostered, I’m starting them” pitchers.

Probably StartI’m likely starting these arms, though I recognize there is more risk than we’d like there to be. Either it’s a tough matchup for a good-not-elite pitcher or a weak lineup for a volatile arm. These pitchers have a 50% or greater chance of performing well in my view and I’m starting them in the majority of situations.

Questionable Start – Think of this tier as “I don’t want to start these pitchers in a vacuum, but you could do worse.” Streamers found in this tier are not pitchers I’m targeting and are only if you are in dire need of one. To play it safe with streaming, just start the Probably Start streamers.

Do Not Start – The reward is not worth the risk. Don’t do it. Seriously, these pitchers have a very slim chance of success or sometimes none at all.

Obviously, there will be circumstances where pitchers should move between teams for your situation specifically and these new tiers should act as a little more help than the straight table from last year.

Please keep in mind that streaming is far from a perfect play. In fact, if they work out over half the time, I’d consider it a success. These matchup rankings & streamer picks are going to be wildly different than the actual results throughout the year, so please, have sympathy before the scathing comments and tweets. I’m only trying to help!

Make sure to read the notes if you’re wondering why I’m favoring certain pitchers over others – I won’t get to everyone and hopefully I answer what questions you will have.

There is a second table for tomorrow’s starting pitcher matchups as well, helping everyone get a jump on their nightly pickups. Please note that these matchups are subject to change, though, and there will be times when I have the incorrect pitcher going. I thank you for your future understanding.

Finally, there are my streaming picks of the day, and please keep in mind that I am forced to pick a streamer every day. Those highlighted in Green are that day’s streaming pick in the second tier and I’d roll with them everywhere. Those in Yellow are in the third tier and should be okay if you’re searching for something on a given day, but I don’t recommend streaming unless you’re in need. Finally, those are Red are those I really don’t want to start (they are labeled as “Do Not Start”, after all) but have no other choice. Don’t stream these guys until you are truly desperate. A streaming pick is defined as “rostered in 20% or fewer leagues according to Fantasy Pros. This really emphasizes the point that I’d be happy if over 50% of these worked. I could do the whole sub 30/40% rostered, but there’s no fun in that. You can use the rankings to realize who those picks would be instead.

(Opener) – Outlines that a pitcher is being opened for that day & the pitcher listed will follow the opener.

As I do my rankings, I thought it would be helpful to showcase a table of how we’re ranking offenses (in alphabetical order by tier):

Nick’s Loose Team Offense Rankings (Updated 7/29)

I’m sure it’ll change through the year + there are differences to be made about teams vs. LHP or RHP, but it works as a general table that y’all should keep in mind.

Alright, let’s get to it.

To spice up these streaming recommendations, I’ve included our new daily fantasy baseball projections powered by PLV, and I’ll be competing against PL Bot to pick the best streaming option each day.

These projections are different from your typical projections as they incorporate our pitch quantifier, assessing pitcher and hitter skills at a much more granular level than your standard box score.

The streaming record is determined by “Was this a productive game for 12-teamers if I started them?” Roughly a PQS with a Win and a strikeout per inning with a sub 1.20 WHIP, with a minimum of 5 IP. Close calls are decided by Playback chat.

Nick’s 2024 Streamer Record: 66-55

Today’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

Auto Starts

Chris Sale @ MIL – Aces gonna ace.

Taj Bradley vs. MIA – This is gonna be fun.

Logan Webb vs. OAK – It’s Oakland.

George Kirby @ BOS – Aces gonna ace…in a tough situation. Weird to have him ranked below two non-AGA arms, but it makes sense in my book.

Grayson Rodriguez vs. TOR – Same with G-Rod, but the other starters are safer.

Zac Gallen vs. WSN – It’s the Nationals and I’m hoping Gallen figures out the heater.

Pablo López @ NYM – The Mets are kinda rough…?

Dylan Cease vs. LAD – He’s allowed two hits in three games and many people are infuriated with my lack of AGA tag and low ranking on The List. Y’all should know the history of Cease – he has ebbs and flows with his mechanics. He now gets the Dodgers. It’s all about moving forward and expecting his latest run to stick is unrealistic. HOWEVER, if he kills it here, I may have to just give him the AGA and call it a day. Go kill it fella and shut me up.

Sonny Gray vs. TEX – He no longer has the AGA tag and gets a tough matchup after a series of questionable performances, but the raw skills are still there. I’d go for it.

Framber Valdez vs. PIT – Yes, I know it’s Pittsburgh and he looked so good against the Dodgers. And also, he was trounced by the Mariners. YOU DON’T KNOW.

Freddy Peralta vs. ATL – He’s looking like Professor Chaos lately and it’s concerning.

Clayton Kershaw @ SDP – He’ll be going longer and I think if you have Kershaw, you’re letting him fly.

Probably Starts

Brayan Bello vs. SEA – He’s in a great place with his arsenal (all pitches working!) and now gets the gift of the Mariners.

Brady Singer @ CHW – He’s cruising and it’s the CrySox.

Nick Lodolo vs. CHC – Lodolo’s four-seamer is back to form and the curve still misses bats.

Andrew Heaney @ STL – I’m buying into Heaney still after the Jays game. The slider is still legit.

Questionable Starts

MacKenzie Gore @ ARI – He’s a Cherry Bomb and I so wish he weren’t.

Cristopher Sánchez vs. NYY – The Yankees are crushing right now and Sánchez has a tendency to make mistakes over the plate.

Drew Thorpe vs. KCR – Thorpe was bamboozled last time out as his four-seamer was obliterated. Hopefully he adjusts against the Royals.

Luis Severino vs. MIN – I love that Sevy is sitting 97 mph with a cutter, but Royce is here and yes, I fear.

Nestor Cortes @ PHI – Cortes is too much of a question mark on a given day to endorse against the Phillies.

Davis Daniel vs. COL – The Rockies are struggling. Daniel has a long enough leash to produce if he can execute well enough.

Trevor Rogers @ TBR – The Rays are a team you can stream against, but does it have to be Rogers…? I’m awfully conflicted if he deserves the third or fourth tier. And he may get traded. That too.

Roddery Muñoz @ TBR – The Rays are rough and now that Rogers has been moved, Muñoz gets a chance to produce.

Do Not Starts

Kyle Freeland @ LAA – Freeland could arguably be at the end of the third tier, but the ceiling just isn’t worth it.

Ross Stripling @ SFG – Hey, at least it’s Oracle Park!

Martín Pérez @ HOU – It’s the Astros.

Jake Bloss @ BAL – He’s making his debut for the Jays and I’m actually incredibly curious to see what we get. I can see a case to put him at the top of the tier given the higher ceiling based on his skill set and I wonder how the Jays use him.

Kyle Hendricks @ CIN – Absolutely not.

UPDATE: Jake Woodford @ HOU – It’s the Amish Mustang! He’s getting the open start for the Pirates and we have no expectations for relevancy.

UPDATE: Paolo Espino @ BAL – He’s getting the call for today and there’s no reason to expect many frames of production.

Tomorrow’s Starting Pitcher Rankings

Auto Starts

Shota Imanaga vs. STL – Aces gonna ace.

Seth Lugo @ DET – It’s Lugo. It’s Detroit. Let’s go.

Sonny Gray @ CHC – He’s been rough lately and let’s be happy he skips the Rangers to get an easier time with the Cubs.

Probably Starts

Charlie Morton vs. MIA – Miami just got rid of everyone.

Questionable Starts

Carson Fulmer vs. COL – The Rockies are not a strong crew and Fulmer should be fine here.

Ben Lively vs. BAL – He’s a Vargas Rule after handling the Phillies, but this is HR-heavy Cleveland + the Orioles lineup.

Do Not Starts

Ryan Feltner @ LAA – There’s a chance Feltner’s breakers are up for it against the Angels, but I’d rather not risk it.

Keider Montero vs. KCR – Montero ain’t the guy you want here.

Trevor Rogers @ CLE – He’s debuting for the Orioles and I’m curious if we’ll get more velocity in an adrenaline fueled game. It’ll likely take a few starts to find something new to latch onto.

Shaun Anderson @ ATL – This feels like a bullpen game and that’s not what you want.
