Sometimes, the stars align. For pitching lovers, they did just that on Saturday. The day featured aces past and present, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tarik Skubal, Kevin Gausman, Jacob deGrom, and José Soriano. That’s not even mentioning budding star Cam Schlittler, who started for the Yankees. Between them, that’s seven All-Star appearances, four Cy Youngs, and a World Series MVP.
Today’s Headlines
Yamamoto Oh So Close
Los Angeles Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto was four outs away from history. Four outs and he’d have completed the second perfect game in Dodgers history and the first in 60 years. Unfortunately, LA’s defense had other ideas. Chicago White Sox second baseman Chase Meidroth hit a dribbler to short. It seemed a surefire out #24. However, Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts bobbled it, allowing Meidroth to reach. Ruled an error instead of a hit, it preserved Yamamoto’s no-hitter. That, sadly, didn’t survive much longer. Chicago outfielder Tristian Peters greeted Yamamoto in the ninth with a lead-off home run to halt the no-hit bid and a chance at history.
If it’s any consolation, Yamamoto’s statline is still stellar: Eight-and-a-third pitched, seven strikeouts, 11 swinging strikes, no walks allowed. Stupendous. So good, even the fans at Rate Park applauded him as he walked off. Oh, and the Dodgers won 7-1.
Return of the Skubal
Guess who’s back! Just six weeks after elbow surgrey, Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal returned to the mound. Triumphant as it was, Skubal couldn’t save the Tigers, who lost 3-1 to the Cleveland Guardians. But the important thing is this: Did the real Skubal stand up? Or was it a mere imposter? The answer is neither. Skubal still had his stuff: Four strikeouts, eight swinging strikes. Surgrey hasn’t stopped him from spitting venom. Yet it has held him at bay. Skubal pitched only 4.2 innings, tying him for his second-shortest start since September of last year. And these weren’t clean frames. Skubal needed 80 pitches to work that deep and wasn’t pristine, allowing five hits, a walk, and a home run. Overall, it’s a step in the right direction. For Detroit, now 29-42, it might be one of the final steps they see Skubal take.
J-Ram to the IL
All-Star third baseman José Ramírez suffered a left hamate bone fracture. For the uninitiated, the hamate is one of eight small carpal bones in the wrist. Fracturing it sidelines any hitter, typically for four to six weeks. There’s no sugarcoating things. It is a brutal loss for Cleveland. Its lineup orbits around Ramirez. Other asteroids can come and go, making landfall or flying further into space. But Ramirez remains constant. Even in a down season, he has 33 RBI, 24 steals, and 2.3 fWAR. He is the center, and now Cleveland has to find out if Yeats is right. Without him, will they hold? Sweeping Detroit today might be a start.
S + G = W for NYY
In what is surely the biggest news in New York sports, the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 yesterday. Doing so required two things: Nine strong innings of pitching and timely hitting. Starter Cam Schlittler supplied most of the former. Though not his strongest outing, six hits and four walks allowed, Schlittler was solid where it counts, with one earned run and seven strikeouts in seven innings. He claimed the margins like New York needed. As for the latter, Yankees first baseman Paul Goldschmidt provided the fortuitous flick of his wrist. Tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth, the 38-year-old shockingly got the best of Louis Varland for a go-ahead and eventual game-winning two-run shot. Knicks, who?
Philly Rides Realmuto
Round and round the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers went on Saturday. But when the music stopped, and the horses stalled, Philly alone sat astride 9-8. Catcher J.T. Realmuto was Philly’s main attraction, going 3-4 with four RBIs. A bulk of those came against the usually dependable Chad Patrick. Realmuto wrecked a middle-middle sinker 416 feet to transform a 4-3 game to 7-3. Milwaukee, to its credit, fought back. Its reward? Not a stuffed teddy bear. Instead, they got to face Philly closer Jhoan Duran. Duran played the strongman, ringing the bell and knocking out each of the three hitters he faced.
By The Numbers
⚾ 100. Texas Rangers first baseman Jake Burger is 100% beef, as he blasted his 100th career home run yesterday.
⚾ 17. Athletics infielder Zack Gelof extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a home run last night. With a .791 OPS, he’s starting to look like his old self.
⚾ 5. The San Diego Padres clubbed five home runs yesterday en route to a 9-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
⚾ 3. The St. Louis Cardinals cranked three home runs. Not so impressive sounding. So, how about this? The Cardinals cranked three home runs in just the seventh inning yesterday. Catcher Ivan Herrera broke the 4-4 tie, outfielder Jordan Walker went deep one batter later, and Blaze Jordan clubbed his first Major League homer shortly after.
⚾ 2. With a win yesterday and Friday, the Boston Red Sox won their second series at Fenway Park this season. The last time they won a series at home was at the start of April.
⚾ 1. Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman allowed one hit in seven innings. He received what used to be thought of as a “deGrom” — a no-decision despite his brilliance.

The Baba Yaga
Shohei Ohtani and John Wick have a lot in common: They’re both dog lovers, fiends of their specific field, and apparently, able to shrug off any injury.

Miz Always Said…
Add a sense of humor to Jacob Misiorowski’s increasing list of abilities.
Pat Murphy on Jacob Misiorowski last night:
“Amazing young man, he really is. Forrest Gump-like, you know what I mean? He’s amazingly real, naive to a lot of things, and it’s beautiful. He goes out and lets it eat.”Miz this morning: 😅 pic.twitter.com/M1sgfccnsf

Injuries and Other Moves
⚾ It’s bad news for Atlanta. Former ace Spencer Strider is going to the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation. Strider exited Friday’s game and might be out for an extended period of time. Manager Walt Weiss said, “It doesn’t look great as we stand here, right now,” on Friday, but Strider has yet to get an MRI. Righty Anthony Molina will take Strider’s place on the roster.
⚾ Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal is officially back. The Tigers re-added the reigning Cy Young winner on Saturday, just six weeks after undergoing surgrey. To add Skubal, Detroit put starter Jack Flaherty on the 15-day IL due to a left peroneal strain. In other Tigers news, infielder Hao-Yu Lee is up, while righty Ty Madden is optioned to Triple-A.
⚾ Cleveland’s bloody Saturday continued. Outfielders Angel Martínez and Chase DeLauter also exited early. The first departed with a left foot contusion. X-Rays were negative. The second with a right rib cage contusion.
⚾ It’s another outfield injury for the Yankees. This time, it’s to outfielder Trent Grisham, who’s landing on the IL thanks to a right hamstring strain. Grisham appeared to have suffered the injury on Friday night during a slide into second. Former top prospect Jasson Domínguez rejoins the Bronx Bombers and will man the outfield.
⚾ Speaking of Yankees outfielders, Giancarlo Stanton suffered a setback. The hulking slugger tweaked his calf while running this weekend. Considering a calf injury has sidelined Stanton since April, it’s especially troubling news for New York.
⚾ The hits keep coming for Kansas City. First baseman Vinnie Pasquantino exited Saturday with a hamate injury in his right hand. While yet to land on the IL, it’s not good news. Neither is that of starter Cole Ragans. After feeling discomfort during a throwing session, the All-Star is set to undergo testing.
⚾ A bad season for Texas Rangers outfielder Evan Carter is getting worse. Texas added the youngster to the 10-day IL with a right oblique strain. This will make his fifth IL stint since his September 2023 debut. Utilityman Cody Freeman joins Texas from Triple-A and will take Carter’s spot.
⚾ Good morning, San Diego. Slugger Miguel Andujar is landing on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain. Andujar tried to play through the injury, but by Odin’s raven, he couldn’t any longer. Veteran infielder/outfielder Nick Solak replaces Andujar for the time being. If that wasn’t enough, shortstop Xander Bogaerts left Saturday’s game after being hit in the head by a pitch. Bogaerts seemed okay before departing later on.
