I know how Tommy Edman became a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline last year, but I still can’t help but wonder how the perfect player for their team-construction philosophy landed there at this point in their run of success. The league has been watching Los Angeles move utility players around to fill in gaps for years: Chris Taylor, Max Muncy, Enrique Hernández, and even CF/1B Cody Bellinger. Other teams’ decision-makers have to understand the value the Dodgers place on positional flexibility. Even their heavyweights make drastic moves to fit the mold. Sure, Freddie Freeman sticks to playing first base, but Shohei Ohtani is working his way back to the mound, and Mookie Betts switched to shortstop because he could. That move slots Edman in at second base, where he’s played the highest percentage of his career games, except for the occasional game in center field. And who subbed in for Ohtani in the leadoff spot yesterday after the defending NL MVP went on the paternity list? Edman, who homered to start the game. That’s his seventh of the season — halfway to a new career high, and we’re not even to the last week of April.

Today’s Headlines
Arizona scores 10 in the 8th, loses
Is this the definitive Sarah Langs Wheeeeeeeeee!!!! game? The Chicago Cubs took a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the 7th. Ian Happ’s grand slam put their win probability at 99%. The Arizona Diamondbacks pummeled Cubs pitching for 10 runs in the 8th. Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s 3-run homer swung the D-backs’ win probability to 96%. Kyle Tucker stole the momentum back in the bottom of the 8th with a 2-run homer (87% to the Cubs). Seiya Suzuki’s solo shot gave Chicago a cushion, if there was such a thing in this game, and Ryan Pressly quieted the offensive surge in the 9th. Langs shared that the 16 runs in the eighth were the most in Wrigley Field’s long history.

Corbin Burnes went six innings and gave up 2 ER for Arizona. Colin Rea made it 4.2 IP while allowing a single run. The Diamondbacks bullpen: 3.0 IP, 11 ER, 12 H, 2 BB, 4 HR. Cubs relievers didn’t fare much better: 4.1 IP, 10 ER, 10 H, 2 BB, 2 HR. Happ and Eugenio Suárez hit grand slams. Carson Kelly launched two homers against his former team. Here are both sides of the record-setting frame:
Lindor’s 250th HR Lifts Mets
Francisco Lindor went 1-for-5, but the one was important. Lindor’s homer in the bottom of the ninth was the 250th of his career and his first walk-off home run with the New York Mets. The NL East leaders beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4.
Night of the Quality Starting Pitcher
Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Jacob deGrom headlined what turned out to be an outstanding evening of starting pitchers. Yamamoto struck out 10 over 7 IP in a 3-0 Dodgers win. He outdueled deGrom, who gave up a homer to Edman to start the game, then settled in and threw 96 pitches with seven strikeouts over 7 IP.
Zack Wheeler struck out 13 Miami Marlins in a 7-2 win for the Philadelphia Phillies. Wheeler went seven, gave up two earned runs, and walked none.
Carlos Rodón blanked the Tampa Bay Rays over six innings, striking out nine (and getting some defensive help, which we’ll get to) in a 1-0 win for the New York Yankees.
Andrew Abbott struck out 11 and gave up a run over six innings in the Cincinnati Reds‘ 8-3 win in Baltimore.
Bryan Woo (7.0 IP, 4 K, 3 ER, L), Bowden Francis (6.0 IP, 5 K, 1 ER, W), Logan Webb (6.0 IP, 12 K, 1 ER, L), and Tyler Anderson (6.0 IP, 6 K, 0 ER, W) put up opposing quality starts in wins for the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels.
Baldwinner for Atlanta
Drake Baldwin hit a go-ahead, pinch-hit single that gave Atlanta the lead in the bottom of the eighth. The team projected to challenge the Dodgers is still languishing just above the Colorado Rockies and the Chicago White Sox in the win column, but they’ll hope that this game is a microcosm of their season: down early with a big turnaround. The Minnesota Twins let a 4-0 lead slip and fell 6-4.
Best Moments From Yesterday
Dynamic Debuts
Luke Keaschall went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base in his Major League debut for Minnesota. Keaschall is the Twins’ No. 3 prospect and No. 57 overall according to MLB Pipeline.
Caleb Durbin went 2-for-4 with a run in his first game at third base for the Milwaukee Brewers. Milwaukee acquired Durbin, MLB Pipeline’s No.21 prospect, in the Devin Williams trade, and fans in his new home gave him a notable welcome.
Cam Slams
The Houston Astros‘ top prospect put himself in good company with his first multi-homer game. Cam Smith is four days older than Yordan Alvarez was when he hit two homers on August 17, 2019.
The Story Continues
Trevor Story hit a pair of three-run homers in Boston’s 10-3 win over the White Sox. That brings his 2025 total to five, which is his combined total for the past two seasons. Here’s to him surpassing last year’s games-played total soon (25, four to go), then working to outdo his 2023 self (43 games) and the 2022 version (94 games).
Defense for Your Rest
It’s a beautiful spring Saturday. Settle in and enjoy some defensive excellence. We’ve got Paul Goldschmidt executing textbook rundown defense to save a run and Anthony Volpe with a dart to third. Steven Kwan and Addison Barger nail runners all over the place, Zach McKinstry slides in to get the Detroit Tigers a win, and Max Muncy ends it, foul or fair.
