The Edwin Díaz injury is a devastating blow not only to the Mets but to baseball in general as it loses it’s top relief pitcher just weeks before the start of the season. I was immediately reminded of the Mariano Rivera injury in 2012 where he tore his ACL and meniscus in the outfield during batting practice with the Yankees losing the best closer in baseball to such a random fluke injury. With Díaz now out for the season as he rehabs from patellar tendon surgery, the Mets bullpen becomes much more of a liability as they will need to depend on David Robertson, Brooks Raley and Adam Ottavino to finish games. As of now, I would guess Robertson gets the first crack at save chances as he has the most experience in the role, but I’d also expect them to go out and add to their bullpen at some point.
PITCHER | TIER | INJURY (SURGERY DATE). NOTES |
---|---|---|
Liam Hendriks | 2 | NHL. Currently no timetable to return. As much as I’d love to see him back this year, he has a long road of treatment ahead of him and we wish him nothing but the best in his recovery. |
Daniel Hudson | 3-4 | Knee. The team is slow playing his return but he should be return by May. |
Tommy Kahnle | 4-5 | Bicep. Hoping to return early in the season. |
Sam Hentges | 4-5 | Shoulder. Making progress and could be back “quickly”. |
Blake Treinen | 4-5 | Rotator Cuff (11/11/22). May be able to return in the second half. |
Aaron Ashby | 5-6 | Shoulder. Aiming to return in May, but unclear of role |
